I just lost my house in Ian. I’m a widow with 2 teens. No flood insurance. Was told by many people that I wouldn’t need to have flood insurance. Folks, don’t assume that these guys have insurance, they may or may not have. Not everyone in Florida is wealthy. Many of us just trying to live a small life and get by. I just lost soo much…

My husband and I wanted to move to Florida when we retire but I've been against it for this very reason. We were walking on the street in Florida about a year ago and I sea shells at the side of the road. It freaked me out thinking that the shells could only be there because of the water. That's the reason I chose not to go to Florida.

My house is on the gulf in Pinellas County,so I had to evacuate. Tuesday night, my sister in her car and me in my car decided to go to our friend’s house in Naples.
On the way there, radio news people were saying the hurricane had shifted south, in our direction. We went to a gas station to decide what to do. All the employees were wonderful considering there was a massive amount of cars waiting for gas, but they were all out in the pouring rain, smiling and directing cars to the pumps. We decided to take a chance and return home.
Please say a prayer for all these employees that they are safe. I looked at my gas receipt to see what city it was in and it’s called, Love’s Travel Stop in FORT MEYERS, Fl.

We never prepare for the worse. We left out cats home for Ida, thinking we’d be back in 2 days. But you never think about the power lines snd amount of devastation that really happens. Our cats were fine even though half of the ceiling had fallen in. For those asking why a lot of ppl don’t evacuate, one major reason is pets. There’s not many places you can take them and the whole thing is traumatic.

I just cannot bring myself to abandon these little creatures that have been my only source of companionship and love for many years (precious gift from God that was my wife has been gone for 23+ years). Many people don't give abandoning their pets to their fate a second thought but when these little ones that are more like your children than they are animals, it's just an easy thing to even think about. My thoughts were, and still are, that if I can't take them with me and protect them then I will stay and suffer the same fate that they will be facing.

I feel very fortunate. I own a second home in Bonita Springs. My Town House is about 25 miles South of here. My daughter lives there full time. She, her boyfriend and their dog waited it out. What saved us is the fact my Community is built up and away from the Coast somewhat. Just a few Palm trees bent over. My Town House was built in 2016. The building codes today are rigorous! 1 foot thick concrete walls and a tiled roof. This will take a substantial amount of time to rebuild these once beautiful areas.

Did America ever have a soul? America was spurned in the black heart of oppression and aggression when it demonized the indigenous people of this land who crossed no ocean. When she dragged other indigenous peoples from their own land of freedom only to enslave them in your free land of Slavery. America has no soul and God Has Had Enough! I'm super glad to see this family got out of there in time it's great to hear her intuition told her to get out of there, however all of this kind of frustrates me when I see the stories of people saying they didn't think it was going to be that bad... on Tuesday I watched several of the weather channels forecast on the European weather model and that European weather model said that the eye was going to hit landfall on the north side of Cape Coral/Fort Myers... and they were spot on. This weather model also predicted 12'+ storm surge from Cape Coral to south of Naples. When you consider that most of that whole area is only a few feet above high tide, anybody with any common sense is going to realize that when the water gets 12 ft Plus your homes and businesses and everything are going to be underwater... so how in the heck can these people say oh I didn't realize it was going to be this bad when I realize it was going to be that bad on the other side of the country.

I've lived here for 36. Born and raised in Broward County, lived in Gainesville for some years, and eventually moved to St. Petersburg to start a family. I recall there being a ton of tornados back in 97/98 in Broward. One of those years we had a real bad one that ripped through Pembroke Pines that wasn't even related to a hurricane. Just was one of those Summers where we got slammed with thunderstorms every night around 6pm. Was crazy seeing pictures from Pines on Tuesday when tornados related to Ian destroyed some planes at North Perry Airport. That's EXACTLY where that really bad tornado hit back in 97/98. I remember going out for a drive with my dad after it hit and seeing a wing from a plane had ripped off and was sticking out of the drive-thru window of the Burger King on University.
Also remember a bad one that did significant damage to a building in my apartment complex when I was going to school in Gainesville back in 2010.
And lest we forget the almost monthly waterspout that makes it on land and does damage in Pinellas Park or Seminole during the Summer.
I feel like Florida has always had a lot of tornados in the Summer.

The Club of Rome has been saying this since the 70s and paid for researchers to confirm their feeling for them. It is really a rehash of Edgar Cayce psychic prophesy. MegaRich folks seem to be into occult and psychic stuff, then say it is The Science.
1906, 1926, 1930s all had 30 ft storm surge storms...however most cities were 30 miles inland on bays...but even they were flooded. The last decades of the 20th century were relatively mild with 8 foot storm surges but high winds. Only one Camille and most others were Cat3 with mild flooding.
Remember these new cities are built on barrier islands and land spits of sand. These areas were washed over for centuries, but in the 80s everything boomed following some destruction of the old 50s cottages and tiki bars. New high rises, posh restaurants and million dollar homes popped up from Tampa to Mississippi.

Probably because so many of the people that got hit are NOT native Floridians but people that have moved here from other states. Native Floridians know what to do when a storm is coming. If you live in a low lying area or in a tornado magnet (trailer) then you pack up and go! If, like myself, you happen to have planned for these things and picked an area that would be very unlikely to flood then you do what is necessary to save yourself, your family and your property. Many native Floridians that got hit by Michael were not prepared for it to make that sudden shift to the west and when it did it was too late to try to get out. Sometimes nature just pulls pranks like that just to prove you can never be too prepared.

This was not mother nature's making it was her defense from an unnatural calculated attack 😨

Incorrect. Nature is an impersonal force.

My heart completely goes out to this guy and his wife and I genuinely hope they recover well. But just a tip about hurricanes: when they say evacuate, do that. Don't go by "intuition." Listen to the experts. When a big hurricane is heading into the gulf, everyone in or near the cone should be prepped with supplies, gassing up vehicles, ready to batten down the hatches, and prepared to evacuate when the order is given - NOT when intuition kicks in.

We were told to evacuate in S Ft. Myers & went further inland. We watched in avid disbelief at the power of the wind. It caused whitecaps on a small lake made bigger. We feared a small waterspout would form out of it. Never want to hear the name Ian ever again
