    This is a discussion topic video about the second generation of videogame consoles. This will be part one of my seven part mini-series. This will be a general video about the generation and will include reference to the consoles I own. The Atari 2600, Magnavox Odyssey 2, Mattel Intellivision, Coleco ColecoVision, and Atari 5200.

    You could recap the entire 1st generation in one video, and discuss the lesser known video game crash of 1977.

    My first console was a second gneration console called the *Voltmace Database Games-Computer*.
    It was manufactured in the UK using imported machinery, so there's similar consoles out there. But the UK model corrected the faults the other consoles had.

    Looking forward to it, Adam. Hope you go all the way to 1st gen, even just with a recap video, so that the series is comprehensive. This is one of my favorite stories on TH-cam, and has taught me a lot about the 5th and previous generations which I didn't really get to experience, and even some stuff about newer generations.

    I'm fixing to be 36 and I've had one up to 6th gen, skipped 7th gen and got in on the eight. Here's my list in order: Atari 2600,NES,Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 2,(skipped out on 7th gen) Xbox one. But here lately been collecting for the 6th gen. I still have my PS2,I've got 3 gamecubes,indigo,black,and platinum,and the og Xbox,still trying to get my hands on a Dreamcast! The og Xbox has become my go to.

    • @rickyrosay33977
      @rickyrosay33977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also skipped 7th generation my ps2, dreamcast, and gamecube were just too fun to let go in hindsight I made the right choice the main reason is no future proofing all of those online based games will become useless in a few years from then on I stopped buying newer consoles the sixth generation was the generation I stopped on and my last favorite generation

    @Gentenstation 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Adam, after doing a lot of research into home consoles, I have found the first generation had a lot more to it. However a lot of it is region specific. It was almost as if each country had its own Gen 1. US with the Odyssey. UK with PC-50x family of systems. Germany with the TeleSpiel ES 2201 and the Interton Video 2000. All with interchangeable carts.

    The fun thing about the European and Latin American market is that we REALLY dislike anti-piracy methods, almost as much as we hate having to put money down.
    But I guess not having those would of turned off a lot of companies from ever investing into the industry.
    On an unrelated note, the Famicom released in Japan in 1981-82. Around the same time as the Atari 5200, and 3 whole years before the 7800.

    Being born in '96, I basically look at generations 1-4 (and even most of gen 5) from a purely historical perspective, where my first exposure to gaming was during the 5th/6th gen overlap in the early 2000s with me playing both PS1 and PS2 games at the same time as a kid

Instead of putting heart and soul into it because finished product was just that....finished. It was either awesome or trash.

    Interesting video. I did grow up with the Pong being my first experience in video games as a pre-schooler, and then Atari 2600. I never really considered Pong as a console generation, more like Generation 0. I considered Atari 2600 (or Atari VCS as it was originally called when I was growing up) and Intellivision as Generation 1, and ColecoVision, Atari 5200 as Generation 2 (ignoring the other lesser-known consoles). What Atari 5200 and Colecovision were doing were light years ahead of the Atari 2600, and for me, it was the next big thing.

    Debate is abound amongst us retro collectors as to wether the odyssey 1 had cartridges or not. I have an original run odyssey and have looked into alittle on how it works. from what I understand everthing that is needed is already inside on boards. all that the cartridge does is rewire the circuits, cuts off and enables these boards wich each is a feature. one board will control the player one paddle, one may control the player two paddle, another the "ball" so if a game of "chase" card is installed it disables the ball board but enables the player 1 and 2 paddles and so forth. I also have a Fairchild channel F, I would call that the first modern console that we know of. interchangeable cartridges that hold actual information of each game. the entire game is inside the cartridge. But I guess this is the age old debate as to wether the odyssey 1's cartridges hold info in the form of circuitry pathways info. back and forth the debate goes.I don't have all of that generation but I do have the Fairchild channel f, emerson arcadia, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, bally astrocade,odyssey 2,vextrex,coleocovision. I do not have an intellivision as there are so many emulations on modern systems. I do have the flashbacks intellivision though. I was born in 72'and am blessed to have lived through most of gaming history. video games were a huge part of my life and inspired my imagination beyond just the games themselves. we felt we were playing the future as to what was going to be someday. My favorite game of all time is in this generation. Star Raiders on the 5200/800. wayy ahead of its time and frankly the most advanced space sim for years in my opinion and it was written in 79' for the 800 computer. it was a generation the truly lit the fires of imagination in us children at the time.

    I was totally oblivious to what was going on during the videogame crash. I wasn't keeping up with the market at the time. I was just a 12 year old kid who loved the Atari 2600 and wanted to upgrade to the 5200. I was a paperboy back then, delivering newspapers, and I managed to save up enough money to buy a 5200. My parent took me up to Meijer (we didn't have Walmart stores in Michigan back in the 80s. We had Meijer and Kmart). Basically, when we got to the videogame section of Meijer, all videogame consoles were replaced with Atari 800 and Commodore 64 computer. I didn't have enough money for a Commodore so I bought and Atari 800XL computer instead of the 5200 that I wanted. But in hindsight, the 5200 was basically a console verson of an Atari 800 computer. Eventually I had also picked up a Commodore 64. When the NES came out I didn't care at the time. I literally thought the NES was a kids toy back then. I don't think that way now, but at the time I was basically getting games on my C64 and Atari for free by copying floppy disks from friends. When the Genesis came out though, that was the first actually game console I ever bought, along with an Atari Jaguar, because I've always been a fan of Atari.

    Love these recaps. Just curious, when you're talking about the first generation of video games you mean the first generation of video game consoles right?
    There was a few video games, arcade and otherwise, that predate the second generation talked about here that were not pong.
    Love these videos man.
    Long live the Dreamcast!

  • @ukkev7056

    I personally consider the Atari 5200 and the Colecovision to be third gen consoles. The Colecovision was very similar inside to the Sega SG-1000 which is considered a third gen console.

    • @Sut1978
      @Sut1978 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uk Kev - Personally the SG-1000 is 2nd generation it is tech level with the Colecovision. And despite the misfortune of releasing same day as the Famicom. The 2nd generation tropes like single screen or flip screen High Score games are the SG-1000's game library.

    • @ukkev7056
      @ukkev7056 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Sutcliffe
      Tech wise, the Wii is a 6th gen console, yet it's still considered a 7th gen console.
      The Atari 5200, the Colecovision and the Sega SG-1000 were consoles to replace the Atari 2600 and Intellevision consoles. When they named the generations, they should have given the Atari 5200, the Colecovision and the Sega SG-1000 their own generation. And made the NES etc the 4th gen.
      Here's an article from 2005 that does that:
      www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=378141

    • @Sut1978
      @Sut1978 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uk Kev I do agree with you there. If not third gen then generation 2.5. Similar with the CD32, PC-FX, 3DO and Jaguar despite being 32/64 bit don't feel 5th gen like the Saturn, N64 and PSX.

    • @ukkev7056
      @ukkev7056 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Sutcliffe
      The CD32 and PC-FX couldn't do proper 3D graphics, so they're more 4th gen than 5th gen.
      I would say that the 3DO and Jaguar are 5th gen consoles. Games on the Jaguar tended to be rushed, which is why they look terrible. Only Alien vs Predator really pushed the Jaguar.

    I picked up a Fairchild Channel F last year with 2 extremely exciting games. Multiplication/Division and Addition/Subtraction. :P Despite that, it actually comes with built in games. Though they are just basically Pong. Even came with the box.
    Probably has the coolest joysticks ever. They look like lightsaber hilts, and are surprisingly intuitive and easy to use. Plus, the console has woodgrain, which automatically makes it cool. :D And the cartridges are basically 8 Track cartridges. Its one big bundle of 70s goodness!
    Thanks for doing videos on this generation! Very excited for them!

I had a Atari 2600 teli games as my 1st system cause when my brother got a new system, i got his old one. i was kinda like you with going to school and I had the Atari when everyone had the nes and when the snes was out, I had the nes. I did show a few friends lock n chase and they were like, this is cool, like pac man with a twist. then they showed me ninja turtles the arcade game and I realized that I was missing out. My games were always cheap though. lol.

    While I no longer have a functioning Fairchild Channel F, I do still have a controller. It was by far one of the strangest controllers I've ever seen. You held the base in one hand liek a pistol grip, and the other hand operated a knob on the top. You could move it forward or back, left or right, but also could twist it clockwise or counter clockwise, and pull it up or push it down. It had NO action button of any kind... Just 4 axes of knob motion. Oddly enough, the closest thing I can think of to the Fairchild Channel F controller is the RCS thruster controls of the old Apollo capsules and the Space Shuttle, particualrly the Shuttle's version. The Apollo control and Shuttle control worked the same ways, but Apollo had a T-Bar for it's multi-axis control, and the Shuttle had a multi-axis knob, not unlike the Channel F.
    I am building an instrument + control panel that will interface to Kerbal Space Program, using a serial I/O telemetry mod. I've decided to resurrect that old Fairchild controller by making it into my RCS controller for the game! I'm going to make sure that the controller is used and mounted non-destructively. It'll simply plug into a 9-pin controller socket, and be mounted using a padded form fitting clamp. I wanna use it, but also preserve it.

    Hey, I own a Vectrex! Absolutely love it. It's my second favorite piece of hardware from the second generation. Atari is my favorite.

    • @MrBoy-qj3bs
      @MrBoy-qj3bs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean to say that Atari *2600* was my favorite. I actually like the 5200 despite the mushy controller that breaks the moment you sneeze near it.

    • @rebelscum6356
      @rebelscum6356 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get yourself an Atari 8-bit computer. Most of the games are direct ports and the 5200 hardware is based off of the 8-bit computers. Plus, the Donkey Kong port is the only home version of DK with the pie factory level.

    • @MrBoy-qj3bs
      @MrBoy-qj3bs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always wanted one. It's on my wish list.
      I have about 20 games for the 5200 and a 5200 emulator for my Dreamcast so I can play some of the less common games. The emulator also includes Atari 8-bit computer games. It's amazing how similar they look and sound to the 5200 variants. Almost identical, really.

    If you don't mind me asking, how often do you play the games/consoles you collect?
    I have a small collection myself and I try to complete a game each week. On my PC, I have a list of all the games I own and I use a program to randomly select a game from the list, and that's the game I'll try to challenge myself to complete that week. This way, no game in my collection goes unplayed... except the shovelware... >_>
    Of course, there are those that I play consistently, such as Rocket League and Super Smash 64. Do you do anything similar?

    Fairchild channel F was the first console that used game cartridges not the Odyssey. Magnavox Odyssey used different colour plastic screen overlays for your TV. The different overlays represented different games, ie hockey, soccer etc.
    It was technically the first 2bd generation console. We draw the line between 1st and second generation consoles at the moment consoles stopped being an all in one unit with the game or games, usually all pong games, pre installed on the hardware, and the second generation being the introduction of hardware having cartridge slots.

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The overlays assisted in visualization, but it did use "cartridges" to create different patterns for the light to be able to move in.

    • @bubba842
      @bubba842 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok I did some research on this and that the "game cards" as they were called were not actually what we would call cartridges by today's standards. They were printed circuit boards that acted like switches or jumpers that made the internal circuitry act different. Since 1 card could be used for multiple games I wouldn't class it as a cartridge, just a different way to manipulate the machine to do different things.
      Since there was no programmes on these, because they didn't use microchips, I wouldn't class these as game cartridges. Its more like a GPIO board on a raspberry pi.

    Even though most of these consoles were before my time, I find this generation quite fun to collect for. From Fairchild to ColecoVision, it can be hard to call it one generation (though for simplicity today we can). I've read that at the time some felt the ColecoVision and 5200 were "third wave", which if true is interesting but doesn't lesson the confusion of this time.
    Oh, and the original Channel F was 100% hard wired! Who thought that was an good idea?

  • @studiokadaver
    @studiokadaver 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the Magnavox Odyssey 2 & the Colecovision + Expansion Module #1 (I did the composite mod on the Colecovision) my Magnavox controllers are dead I’m trying to add DB9 ports instead. I made a DB9 Y cable for the Colecovision because its controller barely works. Only the numbers. So I can use a proper joystick or controller.

    The Vectrex is the only second gen console I own I highly recommend it. It's such an odd ball that I had to have it.
