Realistically Mike Gibson is the only Irishman in the conversation. For me, he runs Sella close for the 13 jersey. Wouldn't hurt to put him at 12. Smokin Joe isn't a 12.

Literally, outside of Blanco and possibly JPR Williams, I'm not sure you could objectively rate anyone higher than Cullen. He's the best pro era fullback easily.

No fullback comes close to Cullen in history; not Blanco, Joubert, Gallagher, Robinson, Heunis, Williams, Hastings, Montgomery, Pienaar, Dagg. None of them, not even close. Cullen was a super charged version of all of them combined. The only fullback to even closely resemble CMC was HO de Villiers. Many of you on here won’t even know the name - alas, if you don’t know him, don’t bother getting into a discussion on fullback play. The other is Israel Folau. The biggest joke in all these comparisons is Halfpenny and Kearney. I can name you 5 university fullbacks in South Africa alone over the past 25 years who are better fullbacks than these two players easily.
As a side note, before professional rugby began in 1996; most northern hemisphere test teams would struggle to beat the teams of the top 4 universities in South Africa alone. Yes I said it. Read and weep. Just a short sobering thought for those insular NH armchair rugby boffs/“experts” to keep you busy. To be frank, nothing has really changed. Just look how South African university players are scattered all over NH professional leagues today. More than any other country on earth outside of the host league. Even NZ players can’t match that level of depth. If you wanna witness firsthand how players are rolled off the production line come to South Africa for 3 months between May and July and watch the top 50 schools in action. You will go back to your home country a changed man. You won’t recognise your origins.
