The design resembles a Stockton & Darlington Railway design, and, back in the 1960s, someone in Model Railway Constructor converted one.

Version of Stephenson long boiler type. Wheelbase was cramped between smokebox and cylinders and the firebox. Interesting model.

SNCF -Societie National de Chemins de Fer. The analogy between the PLM (Paris, a Lyons et mediterannee) and the LNER is quite fitting, as the French in the late 1850s grouped their privatised companies into the five 'Grand Companies', each with a monopoly in the area they served. These were the Chemin de Fer du Nord; d'Est; d'Ouest; du Midi; PLM; Paris-Orleans. During the 1870s the French State opened many lines of railway, too (Chemins de Fer de l'Etat).
The class 3A is a "long boiler" type (originally designed and patented by Robert Stephenson in 1841) with the wheels between the cylinders and smokebox. Those are the Salter safety valve cases behind the steam dome; the sand dome is behind it. They were built in great numbers from the 1850s onwards in France. This particular type being built from 1870 to c.1900 :-) Ant

What I could gather from this locomotive is that it was a mass-produced engine. "Bourbonnais" doesn't refer to a specific class, just this general outline produced by J F Cail in France for the PLM, starting in 1854. Kinda the same scheme as the Degoichi in Japan and the General in the US. The one that's been preserved has had some changes made to it, hence why it looks quite different. The model one is absolutely gorgeous!

I looked at my shelf an took my old Rivarossi box, witch says : 44; diesel locomotive (housing a German V160). Right now it is a non-runner, its missing a brush, but it was only 15 GBP. The pickup "system" is a Rivarossi distinctness, ALL the locos I have from them including my early 2000's SNCF 231E express steam loco (big steamers are loco drive + tires, and the running wheels pick up too) , and the few diesels i own from them, has it!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Ahh I see - really they all have the same system? I must try a few more of them at some point! :D

Hi Sam. I like the Rivarossi SNCF class 3A. I, like you, like the unusual. The two items coming out of the top of the front dome are the safety valve actuating lever and the vertical parts are the operating springs. The cover plate on the funnel would be useful for stopping birds nesting in it. Best regards, Alan.

Nice to see any Rivarossi on the channel, let alone an old one. I have several SNCF HO models but mostly Lima and Joeuf and passenger trains, although some SNCF are used for commuter lines, passenger travel and freight all with the same engines. 1st SNCF Rivarossi switcher I've ever seen. Bring them on! Ever have any Electroten in house? A true Spanish line, they are very interesting and highly detailed as well.
According to the website rivarossi-memory.it, the 3A SNCF 0-3-0 is a faithful reproduction of French steam locomotive and its tender. They were indeed known as "Bourbonnais ' used for hauling freight and passengers. A total of 944 units were produced with 143 still in service at the turn of the Century. Rivarossi production of these units were between 1967-1992. The model 1344 is shown on the site. Given the model number of 40 on the packaging, I'd say it was an earlier rather than later model. Most I've seen from the 1970's and 80's had 4 digit catalog numbers.

I would say that this could have originally been an Italian locomotive "translated" by Rivarossi to France for market reasons. Bourbonnais was the name used also in Italy to call a 0-6-0 Six-coupled, and you could check the similarity of this model to the 1864 Italian FS 215 or to the latter 1888 FS 270, which were produced by several factories and so with many differences amongst them even if in the same class. Maybe some French cabs had no windows aside, and for this reason in such model side openings might have been omitted.

Hi Sam. What an interesting model!. I quite like the design of this loco. The detail on the tender wasn't too bad - so how strange how basic the locomotive is. I have to agree about the realism of the coal in the tender - quite blown away!

It’s interesting to see some of the foreign models and how they compare to the UK. I like the drive mechanism look quite neat. The link between loco and tender is as you say a weak point, Lima used the same type on some of their models.

Beautiful, I may get one and modify it into a Mt lyell baldwin since the chassis is a dead ringer. Nice to see something different and hopefully we'll see more international locos (aside from american) in the future, especially some from my home country (Australia). If you ever do Australian locos would suggest the NSW 45 class by Auscision, It's expensive but really worth it because it has directional lighting, diecast chassis, cab detail with drivers, metal details and a 5 pole motor. if you do plan to get one, I'd hurry as there's only one livery left (A beautiful red one might I add). I can provide a link if you're interested.

Smart Trains made an HO scale battery powered version of this loco in the 1990's, for kiddies plastic tracked HO trainsets. The batteries were carried in the oversized bogie tender (2 x AA batteries). The Smart Trains version of the loco had a metal wheels on the loco, auto track trigger trip switch underneath, working headlight, spark arrestor bucket chimney and vertical cow catcher to "Americanise it" as it came with very well made US bogie cattle cars, gondola, flat and passenger cars. It pretty much looked like the Spanish "Americanised" loco from 1970's spaghetti westerns.
Coupling were very nifty discrete single direction automatic couplings. I have 5 of the things as I bought the sets for the well detailed HO US rolling stock that came in the £5 trainsets.
Smart Trains also into battery O guage trains. Their only loco they produced was the GWR Holden 0-4-0T 101 which I also have an example of. (Yes it is an exact scaled up clone of the Hornby OO version!!

    Nice loco Sam
The thing on the chimney is a spark arrester, its a series of fine mesh layers that will allow steam and smoke through, but stop sparking larger lumps of stuff that would be ejected if the engine is working hard. Some UK companies used them on locos working in docks and other areas where there was a fire risk. In nations like France, Italy, Spain etc were summers are hotter and dryer, and therefore the chance of sparks setting anything lineside on fire is higher they are / were required by law/

Tatls a really cute model. They cold develop that to a very high level I think. Its nice to see moe Continental engines in model form. :-) They are Salter safety valves on the dome. You will see them in early British engines. And that is a cover for the chimney for short stops in stations and when the engine is in storage. The smokebox door is similar t that on the d=famous 'Mersey tanks, one of which we have here i Australia. . :-):-)

    Hello Sam,
Its always fascinating to see engines and rolling stock, unique to other countries. Just a thought, but have you ever sent of one of your engines off to Erik Kalinski, John at chambs123 's friend, for a paint job? I wonder if this engine might look superb given an early pre-SNCF livery paint job, with some of the details picked out. Could be worth experimenting with it maybe, especially as its a 19th Century engine.

I like that - I'd call it 'pleasingly ugly'. It's certainly all business. If it is of wartime vintage, it would look good pulling a couple of flat wagons with a ROCO 1/87 Panzer tank on each. It's also the weird sort of engine you might find working on private sidings in the UK hauling for a mine or on a quayside. Yeah, I like it.

    Giving this for information:
Both HO and 00 gauges have a track gauge (width) of 16.5mm. 00 Scale is 1:76.2 (4mm to 1 foot) whereas HO Scale is 1:87 (3.5mm to 1 foot).
Meaning 00 gauge is 76.2 times smaller than full size and HO is 87 times smaller than full size.
I hope people can refer to this information if they want a full description of the difference between HO and 00. If I made any errors please correct me.

It good to see a European loco been review and it would be great if you review a German loco in the near future.
I really like to see you doing a review of a HO model loco of the USA S160 Class as I like to see one in action on your layout and as I saw two of the model on display at the model shop Gaugemaster.
Next month I'm going to do my model railway layout with a double track lines with two trains in operation and the locos that I'm going to run on it will be just tank engines as well small tender locos.

I wonder how heavy the tender really is. It is pretty shocking that a tiny tiny tender can get really heavy because of the motor inside and a lot of metal and diecast. It could be the same exact weight as a Big Tank Engine like a 2-6-4T. Try weigh the French 0-6-0 tender and a 2-6-4T to see if they weigh the same.

    • @SamsTrains
