I love the overdrive howl. Dads 82 mack superliner had a RTO-12513 in it and it was insanely loud! Dad also drove a i think it was a 65 peterbilt with a RTO-9513 and it was at a good sound level when it was in overdrive. If you are trying to avoid headaches then i would not recommend the Double overdrive RTO-9513. I never heard one in person, but i've heard thet you are heard on the freeway when people are passing you in the opposite direction. I wish we had a RTO-9513 in our 65 freightliner.

You can time them on the B setting and the EX valves will close before the INT ports and then yes it will be supercharged BUT! the problem then being is that since only about 2 inches of the CYL liner has cooling water to it they just cannot take the heat and can burn the heck up pretty fast.

G'day there young Kerby, man your going to be a wealth of info with a few more years under your belt. That old man of yours is lucky to have you so interested in those old trucks. That KW still has the SFDD Timkens in it, but we changed the gears to 5.2 ( the quickest available )now we have double over , 94km/hr at 2100rpm.Still slow for today but i'm not in any hurry. We have mufflers, but there's nothing in them.

I remember a few Petes and KWs with 12V71s here in Alaska with extended cowls (standard length hood with a 10 or 12 inch spacer between the hood and firewall to accommodate the added length of the V-12) - havent seen an extended cowl in many years though.
Ive put a fair amount of time in a truck but I dont think Id be worth much shifting a 13 speed with my left hand.
My truck has a Spicer 1241 auxiliary in it also. Plan to rebuild it this spring - 30 years of service with nothing more than a few oil seals and some shims removed isnt bad.
Beautiful old truck, thanks for posting.

Yea they could depending on vocation. Emissions, fuel economy and other problems inherent with the 2 strokes killed them off. Ever see a 2 stroke not leak oil or blow thick black smoke after a few years use?
Oh and the 12v92 never saw use as a highway engine save for custom jobs.
One thing is for sure, nothing will ever sound as sweet as a Detroit Diesel 2 cycle.

Not as bad as those double over 9513 boxes. Those things just screamed! Todays transmissions uses more teeth in the gearing. These old 12513's and 9513's had less teeth and bigger vs small teeth and more of it.

There is a rule with these. Slam your hand in the door or kick the tire before starting, and then never drive below 1900 rpms. Actually if you turn like a 8v71N (318 detroit) to 2600 rpms, they will actually run and last better because they like the high rpms, and it doesn't hurt anything.

There was a 12V92 engine produced, if you have seen it, it sorta looks like two 6V92s bolted together. Similar to 16V92 (two 8V-92's in series). I dont think theese models were very popular in truck use, but more as generators or boat engines. Never heard of inline 92 series though.

They built them to last in those days , all metal no plastic like now . Quality guages and controls .
