  • Some products just demand a lot of your time. In this case, that's a good thing; because the Zoom R16 is all that.
Get ready to spend some quality time with Owen and his band The Rikters, as they put the portable 16 track recorder to the test in an actual indie-type, acoustically sub-par rehearsal space. Onward to the demo!

Good video. This is one of the few I've seen which actually show a band recording live. Secondly, the Zoom R16 looks like it has the most desirable quality for this kind of recording--- it's simple to use. Making quality demos is what amateur musicians need. A lot of the new recorders are way too complicated. You only need a few tracks to make great music. Don't forget the Beatles only had 4 tracks when they recorded Sgt. Pepper! The music should come first---- not incredibly complicated Space Shuttle control functions!!

I like mixing my music in true stereo, like old school Beatles recording, I only put my basic drum track and acoustic guitar as a base to go by, then pan most everything else to the left or right at around 75%, it sounds bigger when you can hear certain instruments completely seperate.

I just sold my Zoom MRS 1608CD as I now use PC. I think it's excellent bit of kit, got me straight into digital from analogue Multi-Track recording on my Tascam 4 Track. The 1608 (now discontinued, so ebay I guess) had a built in Drum and Bass machine, eight combi Hi-Z/XLR inputs (4 with 48v phantom power), MIDI 5 pin DIN sockets and twin RCA/Phono inputs and multiple guitar/vocal effects as well as a good number of on the fly effects including time synced (to the BPM you have set, you can choose which measure to sync to) Delay . The drum machine was good too with lots of kits and step input, as well as using the built in pads or a MIDI device.
I would recommend Zoom to anyone looking into starting (as well as experienced) recording music as the price is hard to beat for the quality and functions. It's also more convenient than hauling a PC, monitor, sound interface and such, to a gig (unless you have a decent lap top that is) and it's ready to go out of the box.
I've not used the R16, so I can't comment on that but from my experience with the 1608 I should think it's good for what it is.
    Cheers!

I've been looking at multi-track recorders recently and the pickings are pretty slim. I was planning on getting one of the Zoom units, however the more I research them the more user complaints I find. I've heard complaints about build quality (as the comment below) but also that the internal clock drifts on them due to one of the components used (which is an issue if you want to add rhythm tracks post recording or want to use it for video production).
The reviews seem a little more positive for the Tascam recorders. My problem is that the DP-008 and DP-03 both have lower quality recordings and less features than the Zoom units. Next in their line is the 24 track which is out of my budget likely because they have a CD writer in it. It would be nice if Tascam came out with a 16 or 24 track recorder with good quality recording and ditch the CD writer to save on manufacturing cost (or have a CD writer add on that is compatible with future units for those who require it, which I suspect is a minority nowadays).
I guess that leaves the Boss BR-800 to research (as I can't remember the specs off the top of my head).
Edit: After doing more research it appears that pretty much all of the lower priced units have their drawbacks and/or reliability issues. I'm leaning towards the Zoom R8 due to the price, features and recording quality. I'll just have to hope I don't get a lemon I guess.

Be careful with TASCAM stand alone recorders. I had used them for years and the last one DP-24 had problems 6 months after purchase. After taking it in for repair I was informed it would cost me $180 upfront to look at it as the warranty only covers parts after 90 days, no labor. Won't be purchasing TASCAM again.
The ZOOM warranty is a full year on parts and labor

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to go the laptop and interface route. My friend has given me his mothers old laptop and I plan to purchase an interface in the near future.

    • @DebErney
      @DebErney 9 ปีที่แล้ว

The Zoom units have 1 year FULL warranty. I haven't had any problems with my unit and I have used it ALOT. But your right about everyone having a different experience. I use en.audiofanzine.com for honest reviews by musicians that know how to use the equipment.
I've read good things about the Boss BR units.
      IMPORTANT WITH AUDIO INTERFACE;
      1. INSTALL UPDATED DRIVERS FROM WEBSITE
      2. ALWAYS USE THE SAME USB PORT UNIT WAS INSTALLED ON
      3. FIREWIRE TENDS TO HAVE LESS CONFIGURATION/LATENCY PROBLEMS THEN USB
      4. MAKE SURE UNIT IS AT LEAST USB 2 (some aren't and its not always clear.
I've read many good reviews about the FOCUSRITE audio interface units.
(www.sweetwater.com/store/manufacturer/Focusrite) These ranger from $149 on up.
The Tascam units have very limited warranty (which is very hard to locate) tascam.com/support/warranty/
"All parts except heads and disk drives are warranted for one (1) year from the date of original purchase. Heads and disk drives are warranted for ninety (90) days from date of original purchase. Labor is warranted for ninety (90) days from date of original purchase."

I think you are right on the clock issue. I own a zoom r24 and recorded an hour rehearsal, when I synced to video the adio drifts. Is not the end of the world, ibwonder if the tascam DP-24 or DP-32 have the same clock issue.

Unfortunately it doesn't come with autotune or fortunately! Sounds great. I've been using mine as an interface. But I have used it as a standalone. It would be better if it had a gate in the 8xcomp algorithm, and all the guitar distortions aren't really working for me yet. Im interested in seeing if I can get a nice rehearsal recording like you did. Cheers!

Phantom power gives 48 volts (typically) to condenser mics. Google "the difference between dynamic, and condenser mic". And overhead drum mics go overhead (watch the drum set up) of a set of drums, or any other instrument. Usually to achieve a wide ambiance and stereo image. Google is your friend Edd.

PROBLEM SOLVED !!! Be sure to uninstall & delete Zoom entries in Audio Midi Setup app. Also be sure to install clean: No devices in USB slots and quit all programs.
When are they going to update the Zoom R24 driver for Mac OS, so I can use my R24 as a controller in Logic Pro? Because Logic Pro doesn’t recognize the device.
It’s an important issue for me and many users because 1/3rd of the device is rendered unworkable.

Do the make anything like this now (2020). I hate looking at a computer to record. I learned on analog tape and want to pretend that is what I'm doing. It is my production style, although prefer to record bands live to two track. Depending on my mood ill multi-Mic and channel or go for two Mics for the live band and singer on a third track dry but compressed in the same room or open door vocal booth.(best replace vocal booth with drum booth and have the drums in the big room with the band). Open live monitors optional. Some bands are so live oriented the will groove better with a tiny bit of open vocal monitoring.
Please try it. I know we all had to do it at gigs so I know with modern technology and simple gobos+physics, it will sound good, clean and most importantly Groovy.
    Sorry, 4 the rant.luv ya

Hey you go deep into it, thanks.
Only to get it clear: There are effects you can't erase, so you record them to the tracks (e.g. guitar effects) and there are those you can those that you change later reverb and delay. What is it with EQ?
My Idea is it to play with a small band, use this as Mixer with individual EQs, and reverb and be able to at least change the reverb settings while working on the recordings where I need less reverb.
    Is that possible?

As others have said, yes you can. Furthermore, if you then plug the recorder into your computer via the supplied USB lead, you can drag and drop the separate track files from the device's storage onto the computer's disk. And you can do the reverse: drop an audio file onto the device's storage and then use it as if it had been directly recorded on the R16.

How do you do to listen the mix for 3 headphones during the recording if the Zoom R16 only have one headphones output? Must you connect another thing?
    Thanks and greetings from Colombia!

Can this device ignore specific voice tracks on ordinary cds? This so you can sing a solo (similar to a karaoke like situation) with instrumentals only being heard from this device, and no voices being heard from the original cd? Or are modern cds rigged so voice tracks cannot be removed, i.e. ignored by a device like this?

Great video .how do you get the mastering done and make the vocals smooth. I am using a condenser mic for my acoustic in input 1 and another condenser mic in input 2 for my daughters vocal at the same time and the sound is weak during playback . I have an R8 and the instructions are complicated. Not sure how to master , add softness, effect , etc and mix down to get the great sound like I am hearing from everyone on TH-cam. Looking to do a few tracks per recordings. Would like to make sound better on R8 and transfer to laptop to put on kids audio devices for the .Thanks for any help and I really appreciate. Great job

Joe, are u using a compressor on vocals after u record them? That will help smooth and soften sound and keep vocals level volume and sitting in the mix.

I'm looking at getting this mixer for recording my drums only. Does it also provide compression?

at 4:06 you say, "and 24 channels" but it actually should be "and 32 channels."

Problem- 1/4 inch jack won't come back out so i'm pissed about my purchase. They had better fix this for me or bad reviews will abound.
