Went to that 2001 visions show. Before Weezer, Iggy Pop stormed off stage because everyone waited for Weezer. The craze for that band was enormous back then, and one could sense that, when they were on stage, Rivers struggled with that. On a side note, Pinkerton remains my favourite Weezer album.

Same here! That album came just as I had developed more of taste for darker music. The combination of the uncompromising and brutal sound with sugar sweet melodies immediately hit the bullseye for me. It is also without any doubt the most honest and sincere album Rivers ever wrote lyric wise. Too bad he never recovered from the negative reactions to Pinkerton. Every album after (except maybe for the green album) feels like he is taking on a role or used themes and structures to write songs. There are some youtube interviews where he explains his writing process and it all revolves around writing catchphrase like lines that sound cool in a book. 9:22 would probably be a good thing to say in 2009 or 10, but fans generally consider 2016's White Album to be the long overdue 3rd great album by the band. Also, the 2008 collaboration was much more than just giving the song a title. It was a several step process where he worked with TH-cam musicians and fans to write the song "Turnin' Up The Radio" released in 2010.
As someone that absolutely loves the White Album I thought this too- as well as EWBAITE being essentially a love letter to the fans that had stuck with them through thick and thin
I'm not much of a Weezer fan, but Rivers Cuomo is a big fan of The Monkees and if Weezer ends up getting into the Rock Hall, he may be key into finally getting them on the Ballot and in themselves. Great video. One thing to note: Turning Up the Radio was not only a collaboration to pick a song title, but the fans practically wrote the entire song with Rivers. You showed a clip from part 2, but I believe there's at least 15 parts uploaded on his youtube page of when he was crafting the song with the fans.
Just got back from my first Weezer concert...They, Weezer and the Pixies, put on an amazing show and I really enjoyed it!!! If you have not been to a live concert of theirs you should go ASAP!!!
@@cadesturgeon2172 His videos are ok if you don't know the band. But as someone who's a fan of Weezer, Pixies, and The Smiths these videos are shit. He also somehow managed to spread misinformation on his Ian Curtis video.
I remember when he tried to change the formula for his video on The Cure and literally ended up overanalyzing a random comment someone left in one of the band's music videos. I guess that's why he sticks to reciting wiki page articles.
Hey. I dig your videos for the most part. I'm bummed about this video for two reasons. 1) You say the video is about Weezer but you really only talk about Rivers. 2) You didn't mention anything beyond Make Believe in regards to the band...only about Rivers' personal life. They have so many other albums after Make Believe. You really only covered half of their career. Make an "Understanding Weezer part 2"!! Thanks!
When you mentioned fan interaction, how could you not bring up Rivers' Let's Write a Sawng series? He wrote an entire song with the fans, that was even released on their death to false metal album.
Recently I’ve realized that weeper is my favorite band, i always come back their music. So many memories of being really little hearing their songs in the car when my parents would play them.
I think that Rivers is one of the most misunderstood rockstars of our times. He came out with this record that he put his blood, sweat, and tears into and the world took it and ripped it up. But then years later, they are practically begging him to play these songs that they absolutely hated before. Obviously this is going to freak him out and release horrible music that the mainstream media would like. I really feel bad for him (and the rest of the band that had to experience this as well).
the way you said Geffen records as Jeff-In hurt my soul @4:10. Yes I know im the bad guy for knitpicking but damn you cant talk about music without knowing david fucking geffen
Another great video sir! Weezer was a large part of my discovery of alternative music in my youth and this was a cool video, learned a lot about Rivers that I didn't know. I'm one of the people you mentioned that rate their first two albums as their best. The third wasn't bad though, although more "pop rock" it had some songs that got stuck in my head for a while. Really enjoy your channel!
As a musician and huge fan of Weezer, I hope Rivers knows how much his music has influenced me. My band was The Wenzels on the tribute to weezer album playing Mykel and Carli, who I had also interacted with before their tragic passing.
Weezer just seem like the humble geeky teenagers that sit in the corner of the class and think about there futures while everyone else is chicking paper airplanes
I'd personally be interested in seeing a more comprehensive "Understanding" video on Talking Heads, or maybe one that focuses on David Byrne in particular.
The reason those first two records are so good artistically, and the subsequent records aren’t but still hugely successful sales-wise, is before of Pinkerton getting slammed by everyone. It’s clear listening to their records that he decided he’d put his talents into writing pop songs that succeeded instead of Art that fails. Because that’s still a REALLY difficult thing to do and he can and it’s a living. But his sense of humor, there’s a clear ambivalence about it all. He was vulnerable on Pinkerton and got attacked for it, by critics by music consumers by stations not playing, etc. Could’ve easily ended the career of the whole band. What people think is successful is what’s popular. That’s a bitter lesson for every artist. I love this band though and think he’s a genuine genius in his way. Always rooting for Weezer
@Tyler Davis I'm sorry but I can't agree with Pacific Daydream that was one of the WORST albums of that year when it came out and arguably their worst album. Everything Will Be Alright was a great album. I can't see how you would appreciate that mainstream grab garbage more than EWBA but he it's your opinion.
@Tyler Davis I listen to a lot of pop and hip hop, and can go off how it makes me feel as well but even by those standards in the pop landscape it is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator imo. It's just too overproduced and has some of the most disgusting production I've heard from Weezer.
Tha Swami I’m enjoying the Black album as well. I’ve been listening to it since I got my copy in the mail a couple of days ago. The only song I always have to skip is Zombie bastards, idk I just can’t get into it just like how I feel about Pacific Daydream. I don’t understand why EWBAITE is so underrated, it’s so good, waaay better than Pacific Daydream in my opinion.

pinkerton is a great album the publics music taste has always been dumb
Facts 👏🏼
Totally. One of their best.
@@velvetants Not just great , it's their best album yet
@@Rockem1234 it will never be matched. Too many unique conditions that helped formulate it
Yup. Critics always have the most idiotic opinions, and for some reason everyone eats it up lol.
billy corgan or the smashing pumpkins
2 minute albums ....did you see their 3 hour reunion??....it was epic!!!
Love Weezer my first cd the blue album was 11 listen to it still. I understand the father and stepfather thing. Love all the songs. Great band
Still have my original and I’m 37
I’m not a big weezer fan but damn Rivers is such a fascinating human being and I just love reading stuff about them.
The Slapping Rivers graphic is probably the greatest piece of art of all time
Hah thanks for that. I liked it too. Thanks for watching and commenting btw
i started to feel bad after the 4th of 5th slap
I remember in 2018 at a concert in Illinois, Rivers rode past the crowd on a razor scooter.
Best first concert ever.
Maladroit once again forgotten :(
I've always seen Maladroit as 'Pinkerton 2'.
That's cause it's mediocre at best. Sick of people acting like it's an underrated masterpiece.
ooga booga it is great. I skipped it until a few days ago as I would only listen to blue, Pinkerton, and ewbaite and then I finally started listening to all the other albums and maladroit is for sure number before just behind those
9:23 Everything Will Be Alright in the End and The White Album have reached that peak.
I absolutely fucking LOVED Pinkerton. Still do. It's honest. It's sad. It's ugly and screwed up and confused. But it's undeniably emotional. Butterfly is one of the most heart-wrenching songs ever written.
I love you Rivers for being so human ! :)
Sure everyone hated “Pinkerton” when it came out, but overtime, it’s become somewhat of a cult classic. I love it!!!!

Jeb Kush true
he says absolutely nothing insightful about the bands he covers
@@cadesturgeon2172 His videos are ok if you don't know the band. But as someone who's a fan of Weezer, Pixies, and The Smiths these videos are shit. He also somehow managed to spread misinformation on his Ian Curtis video.
I remember when he tried to change the formula for his video on The Cure and literally ended up overanalyzing a random comment someone left in one of the band's music videos. I guess that's why he sticks to reciting wiki page articles.
Haha, I thought I was the only one who thought this channel was awful.
Funny enough, Pinkerton is my favorite album
River is just a weird writer
The man memes on twitter, he's the perfect writer.
His memes are so epic

Thanks!
Fantastic video on my favorite artist! I really hope to meet Rivers at a concert or somewhere in the future!
I love your channel man
Wow this made me love Weezer even more. Thank you for this
When you mentioned fan interaction, how could you not bring up Rivers' Let's Write a Sawng series? He wrote an entire song with the fans, that was even released on their death to false metal album.
I love music and this kind of videos really inspire me to work harder and love myself for doing the thing I like the most.
Please do Xiu Xiu or Deafheaven!
Xiu xiu would be great
I was never much of a Weezer fan but this was a great video and I find Rivers to be a very interesting, humble and cool guy, from what I've seen.
I don't think I understand anything ever
Neil young would be awesome!!

Really enjoy your channel!
he’s the singer of Ween right
Wheaties
The Weezles
No, he's obviously the frontman of Wilco.
no hes the frontman of The Pinkertons
Nah, he’s the frontman of the Carl
As a musician and huge fan of Weezer, I hope Rivers knows how much his music has influenced me. My band was The Wenzels on the tribute to weezer album playing Mykel and Carli, who I had also interacted with before their tragic passing.
Primus. please. You never cover bands that suck
Yes!

You're commenting on a Weezer video lol
You're a doorknob, Les Claypool has more talent in his finger nail than your genetic history. Just Sayin, Party on Wayne.
Kris Frederick somebody doesn’t get the joke. It’s ok, we all make mistakes
i think this is the most amazing video you ever made i love it thankyou
Weezer just seem like the humble geeky teenagers that sit in the corner of the class and think about there futures while everyone else is chicking paper airplanes
I'd personally be interested in seeing a more comprehensive "Understanding" video on Talking Heads, or maybe one that focuses on David Byrne in particular.
Still waiting for radiohead 😪
But I love Weezer😅 so thanks
I would also like stone roses
I really like Weezer, they are very good sounds, great lyrics and stuff, they are soo powerful grunge
Do the toadies!!
Love love Pinkerton! But I also love the blue and green album. Weezer is just awesome.
You mean understanding Rivers? I'm guessing you haven't done Matt's/Rentals' side yet
Should be called, "Understanding Rivers Cuomo"
The part about him hanging out with fans is really true-- Just yesterday I got to do a Jitsi meeting with Rivers.
He gives a whole new meaning to can't knock the hustle
Pinkerton is the best to me. Thank you for your video.
Mentions line up but doesn't mention Sharp/Cropper's departure, Mikey Welsh at all... Uhh.... Is it the Rivers band?
Always loved Rivers. Rock and roll with brains.
I'm really enjoying the Black Album, it's just so good and a HUGE redemption from what they did on their last album.
