A film which perfectly encapsulates the mundanity of a day in the life of a self pitying drunkard. I think a few people are missing the point of this film, but if you were never a drunk it just won't resonate so certainly won't be seen as entertaining - and I completely get that. But for those of you that experienced days like these you will know it's certainly no day at the beach. I could smell the cigarette smoke and alcohol on his damp clothes, taste every drop in his pursuit of narcissistic oblivion. I lived days *exactly* like this. Sober 5 years.
The performance of Mark Burns is impressive. Really felt for the guy trapped by the drink but at the same time with the responsibility for the little girl. To see the takes of the city and the nice interiors complete with famous furniture pieces by Danish designers was a treat. Thanks for uploading!
I think this one of the most brilliant films ever made. Much maligned, misunderstood, lost and disregarded for years. I don't know how or why it took me so long to finally watch it I've certainly been aware of it for a long time. This film is far too brilliant for much of the human race to grasp all of it's layers and meanings and poetic prose. This kind of writing is long gone and a part of the past we only dream of now
That's a bit overwrought. As another commenter puts it, a mundane, alcolholic but highly intelligent man reduced to being a waste of space, an absolute asshole, and worse, one guilty of child endangerment of the worst kind. A depressing film.
Roman Polanski was present during the entire filming of A Day at the Beach. He was editing the picture and shooting inserts with the director, Simon Hesera, when news came of his wife's murder in California. He left England that night. The film was hastily finished without him, put on the shelf and has only recently been rediscovered. In a manner of speaking, this is the film that saved Roman Polanski's life. He was working on it when Charles Manson's Family killed Sharon Tate and others at their home. In fact, Sharon was unhappy that Roman was still not home, meaning that his working on the film kept him unexpectedly longer than anticipated, and he was supposed to be home during the slayings.
polanski had a very tragic life, from losing family to the nazi party to the sadistic murder of his very beautiful pregnant wife, it still amazes me how he managed to go on creating magnificent films.
The description claims that this film takes place in a British seaside town. This is incorrect. The movie was filmed in Denmark. The street signs, and some shop signs, are in Danish. All the beer that is served is Danish (Carlsberg and Tuborg) and the flags on the pier in one scene are Danish.
I have never been so selfish as to put my child in those situations but I definitely have been the type of alcoholic like he is in every way. No wonder my daughter hasn't spoken to me in years and I no longer have friends. If you are young and seeing this please please understand your kids and your friends are more valuable than gold. If you're married try to be a good man because that relationship is also so important. This probably sounds basic but believe me it's true and it will be the most important stuff as you get older.
Few films can authentically convey the nightmarish mis-adventures of the alcoholic, but this is one of them … this film captures the stages upto and including blackout superbly..it was so troubling to me i inadvertently watched the last few scenes resting my face against my hands in prayer pose
This film is a testimony of why one should give up their addictions. I recall 25 years ago I was driving with my 4 year old son. I had used heroin and became cotton sick while going through a McDonald's drive through. I was getting lockjaw and shivering as I paid and pulled into a parking spot. I wasn't even high, it was just a well shot. I had to turn the heat up in the car and wrap in blankets. I told my son I had the flu. I am so glad I got sober not long after, but that was a definite wakeup call that Summer day!
Watching this film was hard because I couldn't but think you can't leave a child with someone you can't be 100% sure about and you can't really trust ...
Great performances. Best portrayal of an alcoholic ever. The child's acting was perfect. Even more so considering the difficultly of the subject matter.
