  • In this episode of ASE Table Talk, Dr. Kevin Linfield, P.E. and QSTI Certified Field Test Leader Matt Gentry discuss velocity measurement probes including the standard pitot probe and an S probe. They go into detail about how the probes differ along with which field testing scenarios you’d want to select a specific probe for. Finally, they wrap up talking about EPA calibration requirements.
Both probes are similar in that they use differential pressure to determine velocity. Standard probes are used for clean air applications like HVAC testing. The design of the standard probe makes it prone to getting plugged by particulate so when working in these industrial applications it’s best to use a S-Type probe. S-Type probes also have the option to include a thermocouple which allows you to measure temperature and velocity in the same traverse. S-Type probes fall under the EPA method 2 and 2G. These methods require yearly probe calibration in an EPA certified wind tunnel.
Airflow Sciences Equipment manufactures high quality testing equipment in our lab in Livonia, Michigan. Probes and other equipment can be customized to fit your specifications. We also provide calibration services in our EPA certified wind tunnel.
