How to update the Sony A7iii - Firmware 3.0

- *CORRECTION* - if you have a computer with USB-C ports, you CAN use the USB-C port on your camera to upgrade the firmware. I just tested it with mine and it connects up just fine. (Probably should have done this yesterday...my bad...). IT IS STILL THE SAME PROCESS WITH 3.01.
Today I updated my a7iii to firmware 3.0. This is how I did it. If you want to know how to update the Sony A7iii - Firmware 3.0, watch on.

I updated mine in this video and it seems stable...I'll be testing the intervalometer and the animal eye-AF and the overall stability of it and will let you know in some more videos this week.

I've tried everything. No card, yes card, USB c USB multiport, both of the system options to update and nothing? It keeps telling me it can't find the camera but it clearly can because it asks me to disconnect when the dmg starts up :( I almost give up but I'm in St. Martin for one more day and really want a timelapse!

@@JSquaredBachata Your camera must be set to Mass Storage Mode for USB Connection. Cick Menu > Setup Tab > Setup4 (the fourth page under the setup tab) USB Connection will be listed there. Change that to "Mass Storage" If you have the setting Ctrl w/ Smartphone set to on, you will not be able to change it to Mass Storage and a warning will pop up saying so. To change that setting, Go to the Network Tab > Network1 and change "Ctrl w/ Smartphone" to "Off" Then go back to the USB Connection and change it to Mass Storage.

thanks as always for putting this together.. IMPORTANT: check to make sure your cable says "Sony Corp." on it, otherwise the connection won't work. something to keep in mind for those folks trying to update

As long as it’s a decent cable, it should work. The cable I used in this tutorial didn’t have Sony Corp on it and it worked just fine.
The Samsung cables seem to have problems but most others are ok.

Yes, as Mike says, the camera does not care at all whether it says "Sony Corp." on its cable ;)… It just needs a stable USB (which is a standard by the way, so Sony can't force you to use their own cables without violating USB rules) connection and some cheap just have loose contacts.
Wow, the first video that got me into your channel was the same but for Ver 2.0 where you solved my problem and made me use the USBC. I did the installation using USBC-USBC from MAC to camera and it worked like a charm. Also, i did not remove any of the SD cards and nothing actually happened. I hope i will not face any future issues. Love you channel, see you soon.

I made this mistake of using a dud USB-C cable for this one and incorrectly assumed that it was the camera not the cable...that'll teach me for rushing!! 🤦🏻♂️ It's great to hear that the 2.0 video was the one that got you watching my videos and helped us meet up!

After trying several times to run the updater, I found this video. Unfortunately, the updater still didn’t work for me on MacOS 10.14.6 Mojave-after confirming that I wanted to run software downloaded from the Internet, I was still receiving an error about changing security settings (the heading was in English but the body of the message was in Japanese, which I can’t read)-but the video at least confirmed that the updater actually works. That encouraged me to keep looking on my system for the security setting. I finally figured out that the updater was opening up the wrong tab on the Security & Privacy preferences. Once I clicked over to the General tab, I saw that MacOS was blocking the updater from running. After clicking on “Allow,” the updater ran, and my a7iii is now updated to version 3.01. 😀

Sony do seem to be more up to date with their PC software over the Mac software...I’ve seen many problems in the comments here and the majority have been with macs. But good to see you were persistent and found the solution for your operating system. 😁👍
@@mikesphotography I still can't get the "allow" thing to show up. it opens system preferences, but never shows the option to allow the connection.
Have you clicked the padlock 🔒 in the bottom left corner and put in your password to allow changes?

Thanks for this no-nonsense guide. This was my first firmware update for my a7iii and it worked a treat thanks to your video. The 128GB SanDisk (95MB/s) card finally works in the camera!
Thanks so much David. I'm glad it all worked for you...it is a little convoluted compared to say the canons where you dump a file on the sd card, turn it on and it does its thing, but the functions we now have are all pretty amazing so it's definitely worth the effort!

Did you use the right update for your camera? I know a few people had this problem when they tried to use the A7riii software for the A7iii or vice versa...
Thanks for running through the update. My only criticism was that you didn't mention if it wiped custom settings or not. Just did the update now and noticed that it kept them all which is rather nice.

I got it installed yesterday. Looking forward to playing with the intervalometer. It would be nice if we did not have to use an external one. The auto eye detection seems to work pretty well. I don't have a pet test the animal eye focus, but am planning a trip to the zoo next week with my grandson, so I will give it a go. Looking forward to your tests, Mike. Addendum to your video description where you already corrected one thing: you can ALSO use USB-A to USB-C, does not have to be USB-C on the computer. (And yes, I did it with my α7-III and yes, of course, it did work fine ;) )
Of course...I think if the connection is good, the computer will pick up the camera...apart from a few macs that seem to refuse to corporate!

Thank you for this. I did the update to get the interval shooting and eye autofocus and it workd great. Updated my camera thru the usb-c and it worked fine, took me about 10mins to do it :) I did have the 2.0 version before

I updated yesterday and in my opinion I noticed so far a good amount of AF improvement with my 24-70z. Nice to have is also the interval mode. I think it is overall a really useful update for the a7mk3. Good video as always. Thank you mike 👍🏻

Unfortunately there isn't a way to unlock the recording time limit on the A7iii. Such a shame as this would be such an easy fix with a firmware update. The only way to do it is to buy something like the atomos ninja V and record externally.

Well done, Mike, especially with the battery, cable type, and computer sleep mode precautions. Did instructions call for battery removal/replacement as final step like other Sony updates? Did this update revert all cam settings to their factory defaults?
Thanks Paul! I haven’t removed the battery and it’s working fine. Also all of my settings are intact, including the ones I’ve stored in The memory mode options 1&2. 👍
Finally got around to doing the update. Tried numerous times but computer would not recognize the camera. Tried my iMac and my MacAir and finally tried a generic USB cable. The cable was the problem. After that worked real smooth.

Hi, it shouldn’t matter too much, it’s more of a precaution really. I’ve left mine in time and time again and it hasn’t done anything to it. It’s more a case of just protecting the images you have taken so if you were to have any images on the sd card, it’s not in anyway going to be affected by the update.

I’m leaving a comment and giving a thumb’s up not just because I thought the video was useful and good (which I really did) but because I never heard a TH-camr suggest leaving a thumb’s down if the viewer was in any way displeased. Usually the either don’t include that option or invite the viewer to run their criticism by the video maker before making any rash decision. Great video

It hasn’t on my camera. Also all the settings in custom mode 1and 2 have been saved as well...and I haven’t heard anyone say that it has so I think custom settings are safe through the upgrade. 👍

It keeps all of the settings, I haven’t lost anything including my settings in the memory modes 1&2. 👍
Only the α9 V5 update did that, and that was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge update with looooots of changes, so it was absolutely ok to restart from scratch here.

Thank you Mike, Your the best by not having to BS around. I have one request and if you've shot with Canon the skin tones seem better than Sony. My wife said she likes Canon images better. I just switched over to Sony and was wondering if there are ways of matching creamer Canon skin tones. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. I Love my new Sony!

I find with the colours, I try not to think about it too much. I just set my white balance for the situation, then in Lightroom and photoshop I make the necessary changes and adjustments needed to give a pleasing image. I do set my colour balance away from the greens a little (in the graph adjustment in the WB setting) and this seems to give a better starting point when editing.

If you have the A7R3 and try using the A73 link (or vice versa) it pops up this message.

Exactly what I was looking for, thank you for this! One thing I did come across was a security block on my MacBook. I had to allow access to something, not quite sure what it was, but was permission was granted, all worked accordingly.

I think with the new built in intervelometer, you won’t need an external one unless your shutter speed needs to be open beyond 30 seconds or you need to use BULB mode.

Hey man! I just came across your channel, quick question... I recently shot a wedding and I shot some backlit images with the sun and I’m noticing a stripping lines and then I found many articles about this issues with the Sony 7iii. Does this firmware update fixes that? Thanks!!
Hi Samuel, were you shooting in silent mode? and also was there any kind of led lighting in the venue or was it just natural lighting?
@@mikesphotography Hi Mike! I was not shooting in Silent mode and also not led lighting at all. It was all natural lighting. I did some research and there's ton of people that do mention this before getting this camera specially if you lots of backlit which I do. I would be happy to share with you the images and for you to see the stripping. Also look on google " Sony 7iii stripping" and you will see images and many people talking about it. I didn't know any of this until I got my hands in the Sony. I am going back to my Canon 5D Mark IV. Sony is a great camera but I think mirrorless camera still have a long way ahead!
Sorry to hear that dude...ultimately you need a camera that works for you and if it's the source of your primary income, it's vital that it works properly. The 5dIV is a powerhouse...I do miss my canons from time to time...
Once the update is complete what mode do you switch back to from mass storage or do you just keep it at mass storage?

What is the best way to get good slow-mo with this thing? The S&Q has too low a bit rate for my liking.
Hi Grant,
If you set your file format to xavc-s HD, you can then set your record setting to 100or 120fps depending on whether you’re in pal or ntsc mode. Then you can slow it down when editing and get smooth slow mo. This will then give you a better bit rate.

I downloaded the update and everything works till the point of the "System Software Updater". I can click "Next" but nothing happens at all.
I also tried disconnecting the camera and rebooting my Mac, but always the same problem.

It does seem really temperamental which is annoying...do you have access to any other computers that are running on a different operating system?
It did work now. I made the mistake that I plugged in the camera right in the beginning, instead of after starting the program.

Do older firmware updates need to be run? My version is 2.0., so, do I need to update 3.0?
You can just go to the latest firmware update, so no need to install 3.0 first. I know a few people who have gone from 1.0 to the latest version without any problems. 👍

Ah man, that sucks. I think the Sony engineers are predominantly pc users. Do you have any friend with Mac OS 14? That seems to work...or a friend with a pc?
It’s such a bad system for updating the firmware...I wish they did the same as canon with a file on the sd card.

If I have not updated from version 1.01 I can straight up update to version 3.0 and it will also include the second version?
Yes. No matter what version you update from, it will install the newest firmware to your camera. 👍

Just curious, must the battery absolutely be at 100% charge? Complete rookie here.
No worries Jared, it doesn't have to be at 100%, just make sure its got a good amount of power in it to cope with the long time it will be switched on and working on loading the software on to the camera. I'd make sure it's at at least 80%.

I tried updating but get a message saying it cannot complete the update :(
EDIT: The lastest Sony Update is compatible with Catalina 10.15, but not 10.15.4 - I managed to fix by switching to my PC.
It is so frustrating how these firmware updates are so unpredictable with the mac operating systems. I've had this happen to me a few times but like you, I have access to my pc as well. The PC software seems to be much more stable in getting and keeping the connection, finding the camera and successfully updating the firmware.

Thank you for this but it's a big shame to Sony for not considering some countries like Sierra Leone because when I tried downloading they told me it's not available for my region, but so many ppl are buy Sony product I have a Sony a73 and I have couple of friends who use Sony cameras too.but this update doesn't work in my country feel really bad.
That is a shame. I could send a link with the files necessary if that helped...or if you got in contact with Sony direct, they would probably send you the files needed.
I never updated to the last firmware, do I need to do that first before doing 3.0 or does this standalone cover that one as well?
No worries, I missed out 2.1 and a few people have gone from firmware 1.0 straight to this, so it’s a standalone firmware update. 👍

Don’t worry, most other cables will work so as long as you find one that works when you connect it to your laptop, you’ll be fine...I haven’t had one that hasn’t worked yet. 👍

The update was fine but for some reason, I did not see to turn on mass storage but the update went fine - any ramifications for doing this? I called Sony and they said it was ok if the update worked no worries. But I still did not do it exactly as asked. I just somehow missed that. Argh.

That’s fine...the camera is normally set to auto, so it will usually just automatically set to mass storage. I think they add this step as some computers can be quite temperamental. Sounds like your computer behaves itself! 😁👍
New firmware Sony a7M3 Update to version 3.10 is there any major changes. Or just the flash compatibility

Before camera is connected to PC/Mac, make sure USB connection type is chosen as "Mass Storage" inside camera setting.

Hi Mike have you tried updating to 3.10 as so far I cannot even get the firmware to see my camera ( iMac)
What version of OS are you using? I had problems but then I updated to 10.15.3 and it worked ok.

It’s all pretty straight forward nowadays and the only problems I’ve seen are Mac issues with the software not cooperating with the camera...I think Sony are more PC than Mac!! 😆

Timelapses and Hyperlapses are a little more time consuming with a decent camera but they can produce some amazing quality sequences when done right...I’m hoping the auto exposure low sensitivity will allow me to shoot day to night sequences...I’ll find out this week!! 😁👍

Interval shooting is the new timelapse function to get a sequence of shots to build into a timelapse. 👍
Sometimes I have trouble with the updater recognising the camera being connected. What seems to work all the time for me is once I open the dmg file, instead of clicking on the updater app, go to the resources folder and click on the Updater link in there, works every time.

Yep, grey market just means that it has been imported so there's nothing wrong with that. Most of mine are imported as well. 😁👍

I tried it several times, it does not work... It tells me that the update could not be installed and that I should restart the camera etc. I did that 3 times now, it still shows me the same message every time. Just click on one of the links in the description to the firmware 3.1 that releases to your camera...they have released an updated firmware version since I filmed this video and you can go straight from 2.1 to 3.1 without any worry.

I think the issues with the Mac were with some of the OS versions...some work, some don’t...Sony are obviously PC people with a Mac technician locked in the basement to cobble together the Mac versions of their software! 😆

Right after I click the 'UpdateSettingTool' my Mac tells me to 'Check the Security & Privacy Setting' but doesn't tell me what to do in it... Is anyone else having this issue, and what can I do to open up accessibility within the Security and Privacy Settings:(
I think you need to allow apps downloaded from (the location you downloaded it from).
You might have to click the lock to make changes and put in your password...

When i try to update it, the program says that it wasn't able to connect to the camera, i've tried it about 15 times already and still have no luck. Im running on mac os 10.14.4 can anyone help?? I've also used USB-C and micro usb as well.
The Mac version of this software is so buggy...its really annoying. Try either plugging in the camera to your computer after you open the software, if that doesn't work, try doing what this dude says for the Mac issues:

Ive also heard that people are having more success with os 10.14. Do you have access to anyone else Mac that is on an earlier version or maybe a pc?
I had the same issue. I notice that my camera was somehow set to "control with smartphone" I turned it off and was able to set it on mass storage and the computer recognized it right away.
Anyone else having problems with the computer recognizing the camera? I tried to update the camera with three different computers- two PCs and one mac- and none of them would recognize the camera and allow the update to proceed, and in each case there was a "check connected device" message on the camera. The Sony helpboards are equally useless (Sony's sage advice includes contacting the computer manufacturer to inquire whether there is a hardware problem...). What terrible software for an otherwise great camera.

I was updating an a6400 the other day...I also updated my laptop recently to Catalina and it was the worst thing I could have done...luckily my wife is still on Mojave 10.14 and it worked OK on that one.

I had the same issue with 3 cables 2 adaptors. i switched from MicroUSB to USB-C and it worked 1st try
Mine doesn't go beyond the 'verifying the connection.....' process....quite annoying. My camera says 'USB Mass Storage Mode' so I know it's connected
What operating system are you using? The sony software is a little temperamental on some of the Mac operating system versions...I think the sony engineers are mostly PC users!

Since I upgraded to this firmware version my Yongnup 622N TX will not communicate with the Sony anymore... the shutter release does not trigger the yongnuo transmitter anymore which is darn annoying giving the fact that I just come back from a wedding where I could not use my flashes off camera. it sucks.
Ah man, that sucks! Have you contacted Sony direct? It’s the first issue that I’ve heard of with this update. It might be worth contacting yongnuo as well...
@@mikesphotography nope I ordered a godox flash to work with my xt16 transmitter, I never had an issue with it and still works well with my AD160 flashes on my sony despite that last update. I ll sell the yongnuo gear...

I am not able to run the 3.0 update. When i start the update, i always have a message that said : update impossible. My computer run under Mac OS 10.14.4 , last firmware on my camera is 2.01. I tried to run a several time this update and I always have the same issue? Someone can help me ?
i solved the issue, i was able install the firmware on a Mac cumputer whit OS X 10.14 instead of 10.14.4

I did follow this and it never let you update! very strange. I connected the camera ad it was showig "Mass Storage" Nothing happened after that
