    Listen folks. This is a source with vast tasting experience and keen insight on the topic of whisky. He's telling us great information, so try out his suggestions and test him out. You will find he is more than just credible. He's a vast resource of experience and knowledge, but more important is his integrity as a taster and witness to the history of whisky and his willingness to share it with us. Thanks Ralfy. You are my guiding light in all things whisky!

    I'm a noob to the whisky game and I just bought a bottle of Glenmorangie 10yo and a bottle of Glenfiddich 12yo to try side-by-side. From your videos, these two seem like a good place to start my journey. Thank you Mr Ralfy.

    Sometimes you buy an expensive whisky and have to work hard to figure out why it was worth it - it usually is, but it can be stressful just trying to figure it out (I'm thinking any Macallan 12). This is the exact opposite - gentle, creamy, relaxing, nothing confusing just simple goodness with a few fruity melodies to keep you interested.

    Re-reviews are always welcome! Especially the big brands that we've all left behind us on our journeys. I'm always surprised when l get a taste of something from long long ago and it's you know ... surprisingly quite good! i started appreciating the 10y when comparing it directly to the 12y finished series (lasanta, quinta ruban, nectar d´or) the influence of the different casks on the original 10y is great and you can always find that base from the 10y

    I think this is a great whisky whisky to reward the beginner as its really easy to pick out a number of distinctive flavours: honey, sugared almond, floral and light mustiness. This review also helped me find the banana/pineapplle and jasmine tea finish. Also Irn-Bru on the nose is definitely there. Thanks Ralfy!

    Glad you have come back to this one Ralfy. It was my gateway into single malts many years ago and have never been dissapointed every time i revisit it. Look forward to the extras...just a thought, would you consider doing something similar in terms of value for money. Such as best quality/complexity at different price points below £100 amongst relatively accessible malts? That would be really insightful. Reason I ask is that I got a Glen Moray Elgin Classic for £16 (on offer) and was surprised by how good it was. Cheers

    I'm a fan of Glenmorangie as it was the malt that got me into Scotch. I wish the 10 year old was 46% un-chillfiltered though. Bill Lumsden says the 10 is lightly filtered at 8 degrees C so some of the oils are still there. Also Glenmorangie only uses casks for a maximum of 2 times so that is why the quality is good.

  • @timweydert3490

    I just got into whiskies and after my very first bottle (Glenlivet Founder's Reserve, which I simply bought out of impulse and because I liked the design), Glenmorangie 10yo is my second bottle and I really like it. The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve is probably not a real reference point, but so far the only one I have and compared to that, this is wonderful for the price.

    Ive never had a bad Glenmorangie. Im quite partial to the Quinta Ruben. This is one of your best vlogs. I dont even consider buying the Lagavulin 16 or 95% of bourbons that have now become shadows of their former selves. Such a shame. Once you pay the price because you think that the dram will be close to the same and its watery and contrived, you get back to the ones that never disappoint. Ardbeg comes to mind.

    • @alexk3088
      @alexk3088 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +1, I fell in love with peat with my first try of Lagavulin 16. But I've never purchased a bottle. Rather explore the ardbegs and other peaty options. Even less likely to get one now, with all the inconsistency issues.

    As someone who drinks tons of Old Forester and Woodford Reserve, the first time I tried Glenmorangie 10 I was immediately reminded of those bourbons from the Brown-Forman casks, especially since the spirit is so light. The tropical fruit elements in particular remind me so much of Old Forester 86.

    • @Olsen-vp5vg
      @Olsen-vp5vg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to know! We must have similar palettes. I mostly drink Old Forester 86 and Woodford Reserve. I’ve tried other bourbons, but keep coming back to those. Just got Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Ruban and love it, guess I need to try the 10 now.

    Light on nose, Yes. Light on palate, Yes... An underwhelming Whisky? NO
    Its an easy scotch (add a lil' Irish-like refineness), but can tease the brain to overworking, IF you really want to. Like a Deanston, quality consistency remains present, that is HARD to shake off. Never a whisky, to be victim of recent price gougings. The pricing remains fair, making it a Whisky, that'll keep getting replenished, without hesitations

  • @thegreatmothra
    @thegreatmothra 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    100% agree on the decline in quality of the Lagavulin 16 and the basic Glenivets. The only Glenlivet worth trying below the 18Y is the Nadurra first fill american oak in my opinion. I can totally appreciate the merits of being consistent like Glenmorangie is (even if I really don't like the stuff personally!).

    • @alexk3088
      @alexk3088 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Recently tried Founder's Reserve. Dreadful, worse than some bottom shelf blends. But then was rewarded with a dram of Nadurra 16. Sublime. Alas, the "now and then" of 'livet.

    Worked out I've been drinking Glenmorangie 10 Year Old for nearly thirty since I bought my first flat and got a bottle as a present, I don't think it's changed all that much and is far better quality and better value than everything else in the range, which, in my opinion, is often the case.
    I don't rush out and buy it but the next time I see it on offer I'll pick up a bottle.

  • @bloomheller22
    @bloomheller22 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Congrats on 10 years Ralfy! Great choice on Glenmorangie too as a celebration.
    BTW, I'm not sure if you've heard of it or not, but there is an incredible Bottle-in-Bond brandy that's hitting the shelfs more in the US called Sacred Bond. What's interesting here first is that BiB is typically only done for bourbons. Second, this is not a typical presentation of BiB, which is sort of frumpy and old fashioned and tracks the typical presentation. This is Christian Brothers brandy, but it has a different name, a different look. It's cleat that the BiB declaration is being used as a distinct feature, which is pretty great. The stuff in the bottle is incredible too; at $15 a bottle, this has got to be the best quality for price drink in the US today. Anyway, "a change is as good as a break;" if you get a chance, I think you'd find this interesting to review.
    And congrats again on ten years of malt reviews!

    First off, thanks Ralfy for donating the bottle for the gathering at the Bon Accord on Saturday. I didn't have any myself on the night, I left it for others to try as I have a bottle anyway, but it was very kind of you.
    Secondly I don't completely agree with you regards Knockando. I do agree it isn't great when first opened, but it opens up wonderfully over time. What I tend to do when I get a bottle is take some and put it in a infinity bottle or something and leave the rest of the bottle alone for a month or so. Once I start drinking it, over a period, it just seems to keep getting better. Admittedly I would prefer if it was great when first opened as well, but I do think it is worth persevering with. Just my opinion.

    Here in the Chicago area, I can get a 1.75 liter of Glenmorangie 10 y.o. (that's 2.333 standard 750 ml bottles worth) for $60 (including 2-50 ml samplers of the 12 y.o. versions!). It's also bottled at 43% here rather than the minimal 40%. This makes the Glenmorangie 10 my go-to single malt for regular sipping. No complaints!

    I like single malt scotch whisky , and I've had many a bottle, and there is always a bottle of the 3 glens (glenlivet 12. Glenmorangie 10. Glenfiddich 12 ) in my cabinet at home. Because they are good simple standard malts that are good for what they are. In my opinion.

    A coworker recently bought a bottle of Lagavulin 16 (his first) as a going away gift here in the States. We all tried it, and man are you right about it; the quality was much less than the ones I bought before Nick Offerman made it famous and the price skyrocketed. They generally run most places I've seen it in the US in the upper $80s at best to $90s. Before the Ron Swanson/Parks and Recreation bump, I was about to find it in the upper $60s. I was in Germany a few years ago and found it -- with conversion -- for $56! If I wasn't limited on space, I would have bought several. I did get lucky and found a bottle for $67 on an Air Force base in northern California recently, and your commentary peaked my interest and dug it out to try while writing this (after I finished a wee dram of the Glenmorangie 10--I always like to drink what you're reviewing if I have it:).
    Interesting results of this bottle of Lag 16 vs. the one we had the other day: this one is a bit better, but still not what I remember from my last (likely the one purchased in Germany which has gone missing from my stuff in my old office at a brewery in British Columbia in which I was the head brewer). There's a bit more viscosity in this bottle too. Actually, the more I taste it over time (maybe about 15 minutes into this tasting so far), the more bitter tannic it gets. Yeah, it definitely starts tasting more like I'm sucking on an oak stave as I get use to the peat.

      I have to agree with you. Bought a bottle last year because of all the hype... biggest letdown amongst Islay Scotches for me. The nose is decent enough, smokey and sweet (sherry? ), but the pallet was one dimensional and just weak. In the last 18 months I've gone through lots of Islays: Ardbeg 10, Ardbeg Uiegedal, Ardbeg Corryvrecken, Laphroaig 10, Laphroaig Triple Wood, Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength, Kilchoman Machier Bay, Bunnahabhain 12, Port Charlotte Heavily Peated, Port Askaig 110 proof and I'll even throw in Talisker 10 and the 2003 Balvenie Peet Week. I know the last 2 are not from Islay. But all of these are better IMO than Lagavulin 16. And we haven't even talked about price point! Actually, they have it at my local Costco here in California for $60 and I still won't buy it... it was that bad! Maybe the Lagavulin 16 is just not what it used to be 5-10 years ago... I've heard others say that as well...

    Glenmorangie 10 is an excellent whisky , especially for the money. After getting that 4-pack sampling it and the 3 main wine casked core expressions I became an immediate fan. Not a loser in that pack, although the Original and the Lasanta are my favorites. And I also like peat monster Islays too.

    God bless the Sixteen Men of Tain! Glen Morangie is my staple house Scotch - affordable, reliable, suits my taste. It's the smell! Nothing smells better. I've tasted better but can't beat the Glen Morangie aroma. While I like to have a bottle or two of something pricier in rotation, Glen Morangie is the daily dram, therefore the constant by which all others are compared. I'm fortunate to get it at 43% ABV and in the 1.75 liter bottle! Yes, I refill my 750 ml bottle, but it's OK because I use a funnel so I don't waste a drop. Cheers!

    This is the drink that moved me from bourbon to scotch. Don't get me wrong, I still drink bourbon, but I appreciate scotch much more.
    Went to a friends house and was offered some scotch after dinner. I accepted to not be rude. I was amazed at the profile of flavors I got from this drink, and told him so. He pulled some other bottles, each unique, and an experience that I never expected from an alcoholic beverage. He had some more expansive names, but I really liked that first drink, Glenmorangie 10. I try to keep a few bottles on hand all the time so I can pass up the regular prices and stock up on the sales :-)
    Glenmorangie 10 has a citrus, honey, and slight vanilla flavor I love. I am not a big fan of peated scotch, but a touch is tolerated if the rest is good.

    If there is one Single Malt that is an every day dram or one doesn’t have to worry about much, it is Glenmorangie. Consistent over last 20 years since I had it first, much better than ‘fiddich, ‘ ‘livet and scores of other brands. This is the JW Black of Single Malts.

    IDK if it's because I'm a bourbon guy trying to get into scotch other then the standard black label, but man I was so hyped up to get this and was so disappointed I couldn't drink it.. Tasted like a strong white wine with a warm lingering aftertaste which wasn't what put me away. I will try to get back to it again but I went back to some good old knobcreek and loved it even more after that glenmorangie experience basically first real scotch test I've had blue label before that was good stuff tho.

    I've tried, maybe half a dozen times now over a period of years to get into whiskey and more often than not I've chosen Glenmorangie as a starting point, simply based on reviews and and other documented tasting notes. I've been frustrated every time! I just can't find it, just don't seem able to "get" it. I don't know, I must have a Billy Goat's palate, I suppose. For all that, however, I really enjoy Ralfy's work and often find myself binge watching for 2 or 3 hours straight. I can enjoy it vicariously at least.

    This one is my first love. In the few years I have enjoyed this whisky, I have had only one bad bottle. But the consistency has been there for sure. Are there better whiskies? For sure. But it's affordable, and satisfying. Still one of my favorites.

    it's my favored single malt for the money, is malty, smooth and oak wood flavor, if i want to drink something more complex I have to spend extra $ 20 or more for a Glenfarclas , Macallan or Grendronich ,. that is why I am good with Glenmorangie

    A reliable entry-level malt imo, but in this price range i'd rather have Arran10. Bottled at 46% , unchillfiltered and non-coloured, it offers much more of what I would call a quality presentation.

    When you add other malts to a dram, how do you do it. Do you add a couple drops, nose and taste; add a couple more, nose and taste; add a couple more, ... etc? Do you pour two or three drams, add a different malt to each, nose and taste? Do you pour two or three drams of different malts, nose and taste; then add a couple drops of another malt (the same) to each, nose and taste?

Not perfect but kind of like a well made lexus...just reliable and has good good flavor. It doesn't taste boring! It has some real nice smooth flavor notes is not too havy not too light just right. It just works!!!

    I have a question for you Ralfy! I don't have as much experience in single malts as I would like to have. You've mentioned that some whiskies, such as this Glenmorangie 10 yo, are whiskies that every whisky drinker should try, if only so that they would understand what single malts are. You know, the common knowledge of whisky that we should learn before we start sipping anything more special. So, do you have any list that comes to mind? Of single malt whiskies that people should try? I have a fair bit of experience in peated whiskies, as I happen to like them, but even though I always want to have a peated whisky at hand, it's not the style that I want to be stuck with. I think a list of a sort could come handy to great many of us.
    Even though I prefer the integrity malts for their honesty, I must say that for me personally it's the flavour that matters in the end. I've had fantastic 40 % ABV whiskies, probably some that have been chill-filtered and colour added to them. And I've tasted integrity malts that I have disliked. 10 yo, 12 yo... Doesn't matter to me much. It's the basic bottlings that have usually offered me the biggest experiences. So, any list of some classic scotch single malts that we should all know? Doesn't have to be a mile long.

    I just bought this bottle this afternoon, first ever whisky I've bought an tried, after watching as much videos reviewing this whisky as i possibly could find since middle of this past Summer, all the scents and flavors they all smelled an tasted sounded incredible, so i finally went out an bought one, came home an poured a little bit of it, all i smelled an tasted was strong ethanol and the alcohol burning my mouth. I suppose after getting past the strong ethanol smell i could almost imagine i could've smelled something floral and citrusy. I really, really wanted to like it sooo much. I hope i can eventually get past it, and eventually like it, i'm not giving up on it
