How to Grow Potatoes in Pots

Growing potatoes is both fun and satisfying, not to mention the food that comes from a good potato harvest. Growing potatoes in pots is both easy and convenient and allows the grower to control the soil type much easier than growing in the ground. It also allows for better pest control and frost protection. In this video I plant early seed potatoes, the varieties are charlotte and lady crystal. I also start two experiments to compare different composts and fertilisers to see which gives the best results later in the year.

Thanks for watching. Only really with early potatoes. Main crop are best on one level near the bottom of the pot.

Hi Jase, I'm reusing my compost in my 30L pots, I'm going to add fish blood and bonemeal, hoof and horn which I've never tried, looking forward to getting my main crop in but too early, thanks for sharing. Steve Colwell

Hi Stephen. A lot of people reuse their compost and add fertiliser. I do it this way so I don’t have to put fresh shop bought on the beds in case it has weed killer etc in it.

I put my Arron Pilot earlies in on the 1st of march and they are coming up well..blood fish and bone Is a good alround fertilizer I also planted some maris piper and king edwards all in containers and all showing now...I mulched with straw to protect from any late frosts...Hopefully some nice new potatoes by the end of May..

If I were planting main crop in pots I would only put 2 or 3 on one layer near the bottom of the pot.
