Chickens absolutely love those grubs and my friends said they get more eggs after a heavy feeding of them. I found 75 of them while turning a compost pile and the chickens went crazy.

I live inland San Diego and no other channel even comes close to helping me. I started with someone giving me a dead orchid and now I have 3 green houses with seeds, winter tomatoes, greens, lettuce and a passion fruit vine we had to build a custom trellis for! I spend my days in a sound booth so getting outside is critical for my sanity! Thanks for bringing the fun back to gardening. 🥾 🥾

I totally just gave up on my garden mid-summer. I recently pruned my pepper plants, and they are already growing back, my tomatoes were attacked by spider mites and infested/ died :(. My sprayer broke/got stuck and I cannot twist it open. Eggplants died. I wasn't able to grow strawberries at all this year. *But* I was able to make an amazing Tomato Sauce with the tomatoes I harvested earlier in the summer. Hopefully I gain the motivation to go out there and try again. I have so many pots, soil and seeds lol. I recently gave some away to my cousins Elementary School, and her class has their own little garden going. Cheers EG team :D

I did a ruth stout/no dig type potato bed as well as containers last year. I didn't use straw just put down a bit of compost mixed with bone and blood meal with more compost heaped over the top. They took a little longer to start dying back than the container plants and they were huge! I've just moved, don't have beds yet,and have used all my containers for garlic so I'm just going to go buy some organic russets and make some hills to plant them in and see what happens. Some of my stored potatoes are already sprouting so I might just continue on by planting those out as they sprout in a kind of succession planting. We'll see what happens!

I was pleasantly surprised when potatoes grew fine in my horrible Virginia clay, though the size and quantity suffered from the sheer physical restriction. Breaking up the soil structure and adding a few buckets of creek mud per row, predictably, offered an incredible advantage. It's funny how delighted one can be by an unsurprising result.

I literally watched your video this morning on growing potatoes and 10 gallon bags, I'm thinking of doing something similar in my own Garden within the next 2 years. Growing them in buckets would probably be better for my situation though, since I'm pretty sure my bags will get infested with ants around my location, and it would be easier to grow them in barrel halves I think. ✌️

Ruth Stout lived in Topeka, Kansas - with average rainfall over 36". She could cover her potatoes with straw, not worry much about them and they would give her plenty to harvest. The scenario in California is different, though. California's rainfall is mainly in winter. Potatoes can withstand a light frost - not lower than 28 degrees F. If your winter isn't below 28 degrees F, then Stout's method and fall planting could work. California hardly rains at all in summer - so if you plant potatoes in spring after the last frost and they need summer water, then it would be a safer strategy to bury them in the ground.

I just watched the San Diego Seed Company video about potato growing, just before this one. She said that you don't want to slice the potatoes and immediately put them in the dirt. You'll have more success letting them scab over first, and start sprouting, before you put them in the ground....

We are in the deep south bordering swamp land, so live and learn 😂 However, I did get 3 pounds of potatoes 🎉 and a bunch of those root vegetable larvas 😭🤦💔 They did only go after the whole rotten potatoes I planted... And did not touch a single one of the babies!!! Solarizing them with the soil in a kiddie pool right now to "compost and sterilize." What am I doing wrong? I hill it, hoping that more potatoes grow. I use compost, I used bone meal to promote tubular growth. Also, in growing in a large pot. I love your videos, but it is straw. NEVER HAY which is full of grass and weed seeds. All the seeds have of course been removed from the straw. I did my potatoes down a couple of inches, water well and cover with a thick layer of straw when I see the little plants come up. It a great job of suppressing weeds and keeps the moisture in our dry southern Saskatchewan summers. My only issue was the dear loved to bed down in the cool moist soil and did flatten a lot of the plants. They are planted in an area the second year after either horse or sheep manure (well-rotted of course). Huge production is the result. And lucky for my neighbors, I don't garden in the nude.

I successfully grow potatoes in 5 gallon Home Depot buckets with drain holes drilled into the bottom of each bucket. I start with about 6" of soil in the bucket and then as the plants get about 10" tall I "hill" or put about 4-5" of soil around the plants. I repeat this until I reach the top of each bucket. After that I just keep them watered and wait for the potato magic to happen. Good luck! - Rhonda

You missed the most important potato, Idaho Russet. This from an Idaho girl. The best fries and baked and hash browns and ……so on.
