This movie was a masterpiece, ahead of its time, awesome screenplay, superhit songs, and charm od dev anand... watched it almost 100 times.. but still cannot get over it.

Jewel Thief was inspired by 3 Alfred Hitchcock movies To catch a thief (Jewel expert part), North to Northwest (Made up Identity), and Vertigo (Hero was afraid of heights), still the mash-up was wonderfully performed.
Extraordinary movie ...Dada muni, dev saab were briliant in this movie ,but in the end , vijayanthi mala gets all the accilades for her dance performance in joton pe aisi baat song.. For me, Goldie is the real hero of this movie.

Just watched today. This film is way and way ahead of it's time. Even today's thrillers can't match it's hype and when the suspense will oppened, u will be blown though u guess. If today's generation will have any complain from it then it will be the songs which take a long time and makes bore.But if u listen to it the songs are really good. Don't miss it.

Dev sahab, together with his brother Vijay Anand, made many memorable films like 'Kala Bazaar', 'Tere Ghar Ke Samne', 'Guide', 'Jewel Thief', 'Johnny Mera Naam', etc. Guide was, undoubtedly, their best work of all time. But their other works are also excellent. As far as Jewel Thief is concerned, Ashok Kumar stole the show in this movie. Vijay Anand was good in making suspense-thrillers. The other filmmaker, who made good thrillers, was B.R. Chopra, in movies like 'Kanoon', 'Humraaz', 'Itefaaq' and 'Dhund'.

Two more interesting points about the music of Jewel Thief, not 100 per cent sure about the first one. a) Lata Mangeshkar had refused to sing with Mohammad Rafi due to their fight. Suman Kalyanpur had replaced Lataji in many duets with Mohd. Rafi for around 4-5 years (need confirmation). Dil Pukare from this film is the first song sung by both after resolving their fight. b) The song Hoton Pe Aisi Baat is the only hindi film song to feature over 10 percussion instruments. Never before and never after. Such was the mastery of S D Burman (with immense contribution of R D Burman in this song).

Vijay Anand was extraordinary but not acknowledged as much. Not a single scene is wasted, coupled with beautiful songs and song presentations. Seeing in mirror was peak. Ashokkumar has worked as villain in a few films like gumrah ( not exactly but posed as) he was at his best. The synical laugh was extraordinary
Dadamuni had played anti-hero roles in successful movies like 'Kismet' and 'Sangram'. Even 'Sangram', in 1950, got banned by the govt due to the impact of Ashok Kumar's negative role.

I have felt that Dev Anand had two phases in his career A) Before his face changed: When he gave some amazing performance and almost all his films were good. B) After his face changed: When his acting skills started to go down hill and barring one or two movies here and there like " Johny Mera Naam" almost all his movies were awful and filled with poor & overacting.
