@10:10 " Friend...not here" message is because in SOTFS version, there is a non-aggressive NPC there with a torch. If you can keep him alive he will follow you through out the level and scare away all the bleed monsters since they are afraid of light.

You have the black separation crystal in your inventory. You can't get rid of the item. You parked the cursor right next to it when looking for it.
Any summon that dies or is dismissed can be resummoned after resting at a bonfire.
You can light a torch at the bonfire, or at certain already lit sources of fire you come across. The prompt was on screen to do so at least once in this video. Torches as an item you find or buy are added into a accumulated torch timer you can see in your equipment screen.

44:58 the torches were meant to be a much bigger mechanic than they ended up being in the final version of the game with early trailers showcasing mechanics that didn’t make it to release.
There are still a ton of neat torch related Easter eggs like NPC’s that invade and drop unique items in a certain zone if all torches in it are lit, enemies that are afraid of fire, and level design being purposely pushed to the darker side making a torch a viable offhand to see better and target easier. There’s a major boss that is made much more difficult if you don’t light braziers in the arena and, like you saw here, there are zones where light changes everything. Earlier in the zone pirates lost you easily when you ran away because they couldn’t see you and had a low aggro range but once you lit the braziers they could see you a mile away and didn’t lose you when you ran.
Also, if you’re interested in challenge runs, a fun common challenge run is the Olympic Torch run where one must pick up and immediately light the first torch you encounter by the fire keepers hut and keep it lit the entire game, meaning it’s a deathless run with the added bonus of needing to avoid water, play with one weapon and without a shield, and hit every torch drop location asap before the torch’s limited burn duration runs out.

@11:40 The Ring of Life Protection is like the Ring of Sacrifice in Dark Souls Remastered. Both both rings break when you die, but in Dark Souls II you can have the ring repaired at a blacksmith for a reasonable price. In the Scholars of the First Sin, they raised the repair price considerably.

I'd probably agree - but it's one of the few places where SotFS is better. As you guessed, there's an extra shortcut. No extra bonfire though.
You are also right the torches are rarely relevant in this game. There are few places where the fire is necessary and even fewer where light is important - one way or another. There are a couple of extra places in SotFS, however, where there are hidden enemies that are exposed by torchlight.
Metal chests are never mimics. Wooden ones could be. There are ways to spot mimics but we wouldn't want to spoil the fun, would we?

You have a torch timer that is shown relatively in the center of your equipment menu. Every time you pick up a torch, the timer increases by 5 minutes. Whenever you are near a bonfire, you can rest there, but you should also have the option to 'Switch action' and choose 'Light Torch' instead of resting. You can also light a torch from other flame sources like some of the flame brazers scattered throughout the game. The only way to light your torch if you are not near a bonfire or flame brazer is with the Flame Butterfly consumable item.

There's a cheesy way to see if there is a mimic as a chest.
If you pan the camera so it passes through the chest (clip through it) you will notice it has teeth and you basically see the whole inside of it lol. If it's not one it won't let you clip through the chest.

@@LiliaTV I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before. But DS2 has 2 very distinct sort of chests, metal ones and wood ones. The metal ones often have important items, where the wood ones have "useful" ones. The distinction is in the fact you can break the wooden ones (do not though, it will destroy the items inside).
I think this is done because alot of people got used to hitting all the chests to check for mimics, so this would punish that? There are also spots in game where the game itself will, with a trap or somesuch try to destroy a chest, if you cannot get to it before hand.

Any bonfire or lit torch you can light a torch at. The timer is in your equip screen, each torch you find adds I believe 5 minutes to the timer. You can light torches throughout the game and they will remain lit.

Ring is totally worth it. Poise is god tier in Dark Souls 1 and 2 and many make builds simply around poise and being able to tank hits. Note, this game gives an insane amount of souls compared to every other game in the franchise, you will never need to worry about not having souls for anything. Oh you don't equip torches either, they auto go on the left hand when you light them at a bonfire or another lit torch.

Fun fact - Flexile sentry is partially optional boss, you can get to the Lost Bastille other way 😀 And if you have summons for the boss, you give lesser damage and boss have more HP so it can be tough cause some summons are totally useless, plus you get lesser souls for beating them. In flexile sentry arena, if you would fight it long enough, waterlevel was rising, so movement and rolls would be slower, but you will get a chance to learn that feeling further in the game 🤪

Ds2 was my first souls game, and as such No Man's Wharf was the first area that really screwed with me. My memories of this area are not fond, honestly I despised it, but I've since come to understand there is a coolness factor to it, because there's little else like it in all the souls games. Just wandering around the pier while pirates are hanging out, sleeping and drinking around you before you steal their ghost ship is pretty cool.

I too thought this was the coolest level in the game! Though I only played half the game, the "dark" level was too much for me and in the SotFS edition there was a messege saying "secret door" in front of evry single wall in the entire game (annoingly placed so that it locked on to your interact function when you were trying to focus on the wall and you could never be confident you had checked it properly). It broke me.
Just in case anyone is wondering. The scandinavian in me needs to point out that the Varangian guard were viking mercenaries employed by the Byzantine emperors as bodyguards. So in video-games it usualy just means "fancy vikings".
