Mexico isnt the only place in the world where taxi drivers make foreigners pay more. Pretty much the whole of south east asia for example.

Hey! His family used a generalization to make him not go. I've lived in Mexico 14 fucking years and I haven't got robbed, extorted or even kidnapped. I live in Mexico City which is the best place to visit as well as Cancun and Guadalajara which are safe (I've been there). There are people missing from the poor slums in Mexico in the outside of these urban areas which make about 40 to 50% of Mexico's population. If you go to cities you're fine, but if you go towards the slums you should act like the guy in this video. I HATE THIS not because most people in the North of the country (which boarders the US) are poor and live in small cities because its a desert it means that we live in FUCKING pueblos and we get robbed every week. As I said before, I have lived here 14 years and nothing, I repeat, nothing has happened to me.

Wow just got back from Mexico city last Monday, and I agree 100%. We were told by friends and family not go, they'll rob you kidnap you blah blah. It turned out to be the best trip I've had in a long time. We took the subway the taxis the bus. Taxi cab drivers are shaddy but we ran into a few cool ones you have to be direct and firm with your negotiations when it comes to cab fares. We were charged 40 to go to some place, on the way back the cabies were charging 100, we said no and kept asking until we got a cab driver who asked for 40. Best advice try not to look like a "mark". And more important have fun.

Another good tip for dealing with "killer" cabbies is to visibly snap a picture of your drivers credentials and send it to a friend or bluff send it to no one. (if placarded) Another is to ask his name and communicate that and the cab number/company over the phone to no one (bluff) or a friend.

People venturing there have heard, needlessly said, …………….heard of many a story that Americans were robbed or killed or both? But you have many people optimistically believing: “This won’t happen to me”. then it does happen to them, and they act incredulous, as if to say: “I thought I was special. And that nothing would ever happen to me because I’m nice”
I guess it’s fair to say that people of this mindset believe others were less than nice, less than perfect, less than themselves, perhaps?

30 peso taxis here in Comitan, Chiapas. Very low crime. Clean, friendly, safe. Taxi drivers stop to let you cross the street often. After years of travel here it varies by city. Worst cops I ever have dealt with traffic wise? Acapulco. Hidden pocket is a wise idea and throw wallet. Rudimentary spanish goes MILES in helping out. Love this country after being here off and on and full time now for 15 months. Drove down here in our van with all our tools and goods. Gotta keep your eyes open though. Much prefer it here to most american cities. Very polite society overall. Have no fear: better here!!!

thank-you luke, for what you do. so far i've only been robbed once. i was pickpocketed in vietnam in '98 for almost four dollars on an evening stroll in Nha Trang... I had two hundred in my secret interior pocket, out of reach.. The only other incident was being approached by a scary dude in amsterdam after turning down the wrong street, (it was weird, just like the story goes, hair on the back of my neck got stiff but before I could turn around and leave, i was confronted) who put a knife up to my stomach and demanded money, i did a quick disarming move (a friend in high school was a judo black belt and taught me that) to knock the knife out of his hand and ran, and as i ran, a police car drove by the end of the street and it was over. I learned something that day. I've done a fair bit of travel and all the world over people are wonderful and welcoming and the few bad ones shouldn't let us restrict our curiosity to see and experience the world and other cultures

Kept to the main streets, never went to the clubs and was in before very late. Mazatlan they looked after you. I can't wait for Covid to go so I can go back! Use your common sense don't look like a victim. I didn't wear jewelry and was very polite and smiled...the locals were amazing and couldn't be kinder and more helpful even when I got lost at night

Good report. You should continue to offer travel tips once in a while as part of the other great and more important work that you do. You might even include interviews with some streetwise locals and/or expats. From time to time I'd like to see a short travel report (3-5 min) which includes interesting people, places, good deals and some good reasons why I should visit.
U.S. citizens might be interested in knowing just how far their dollar will go and where, when and how to safely exchange currency. Maybe you could interview an American who actually lives there.
You might want to offer additional information on travel costs, e.g., an estimate on how much a budget traveler should expect to spend per day on food, shelter, transportation and entertainment. Tell people when is the best time to visit. Another issue you might want to mention is how easy or not it is to obtain a tourist visa and what time limits are placed on foreigners who visit as tourists. Finally, a few thoughts on medical care and insurance might help your listeners.
You could do all of the above in 5 min. or less...........

Hardly anybody can be more accurate on a vid like this even for a mexican. Best thing people do with the first honest taxi you find ask for his cellphone # and call him every time. Mexico city streets are for local workers and residents, entrepreneurs use choppers as taxis from airport to buildings and residences to avoid all that. Luke don't carry anything in your backpockets. If you ever get ripped off in anyway just do as anyone else, carry on and leave it all behind. Best of wishes

I don't think a foreigner rate is unfair at all, even if you're paying 3-5 times the local rate. Foreigners will still be paying a fraction of the taxi rates of their home countries. People dream of paying 150 pesos for a cab ride to go anywhere in the states. Furthermore looking at difference in per capita income between a foreigner's country and a place like Mexico, paying a local rate as a foreigner becomes unfair for that taxi driver.

Disgraceful... Every comment he makes remimds me of ignorant travelers who live in a bubble of fear, human interaction makes alot more sense than just staring around and judging. If your single out as a possible target trust me ill be due to your own self insecurities as s person...easy target.
