    Great video, i did something similar, i ran romex wire from my outside outlet through one of the hollow posts using hole saws and a fish tape and added a switch for a ceiling fan and an gfci outlet for any other electrical items. It hid the wires very well, all you see is the switch and outlet on the posts.

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I HAD to paint those ugly conduits. Now, you dont even notice them because they are the same color as the rest of the black trim. You are not crazy, you have class and taste! Stick to your guns! So here is what I did. I laid out all the conduit AND the fittings and sprayed them all first. Then when I had to cut the long conduit pieces, they were already all black. Worked like a charm. Good luck. We are going to add gutters to it at some point.

    Not sure if you’ve had any issues with wind, but one consideration might be to add a stabilizer between the braces and then you’re less susceptible to side winds knocking those blades into the braces.

      I got it from home depot. There is some code here or something that says you cant use romex (the wire in the yellow binding) if you are putting it through a conduit. So, I purchased some wire off the "Cut to length" rolls at home depot by the foot. I got 50ft of it. It's the only 3 wire they have on the big rolls there. The guy from that aisle told me its the same wire as in the romex so ask the employee which one that is. It's a 3 wire black, white and green.

    Could you have plugged the fan and the lights in the same box? Granted, the switch would turn them both on, but that's an option you could have done right?

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Yes that was absolutely and option. And yes, I didn't chose that options because I didn't want the lights to come on every time the fan was turned on. I also wanted to have an actual switch outside to turn the fan on and off with so we didn't pull on that chain each time. But yes, you could totally just plug it into the outlet I installed up in the rafters for the LED lights. Thanks so much for watching.

  • @MrCrippyBlunt
    @MrCrippyBlunt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What is the junction box for? I want to do this same thing to my gazebo and I am trying to understand why the fan plug can’t come out of the fan switch box straight to the outlet versus having to add a junction box. Excellent work by the way!

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi PN. The junction box is to convert the wiring from the fan, which is just wire to an actual plug so I can plug it into the outdoor outlet on the house. When you buy the fan, it just has three wires coming off it. I extended those wires 25 feet to the junction box on the gazebo post near the patio door. Then from the junction box I converted it to the end of an outdoor extension cord so I could plug it in.

    • @MrCrippyBlunt
      @MrCrippyBlunt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plant Based Dads Thanks for the reply! So it’s not possible to convert the wiring from the switch into a plug? You wired the fan to the fan switch, then from the fan switch you took the wiring to the junction box, so it’s not possible to use the wiring from the fan switch and just turn it into the plug at that point vs having to create a junction box? I’m not questioning what you did, I’m just wondering if I could do the job without the junction box that way I don’t have to have two boxes mounted on the gazebo post.

    Was the 12 inch down rod included or was it a separate purchase? What diameter? 1 inch or 3/4? I ordered the same fan but it doesn’t mention a down rod being included and I can’t find any info on the mfg website. Thanks

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert. It does come with a down road. But it's only a few inches. I had to buy the 12in one from Home Depot. I just took the one they gave me with the fan and compared it to the ones in the fan aisle at HD. It was pretty easy. They are all the same width. I got a 12inch and an 18inch. I ended up using the 12in because I felt the 18inch brought the fans down too far from the ceiling. Thanks so much for watching.

    Hi, what did you paint the pvc pipes and junction boxes black with?

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I used spray paint from Hope Depot. I just did a flat black to match the trim on the gazebo. I used high heat spray paint because of how hot it gets here in Phoenix. I had to lay all the pieces out on tables in the garage and then spray them all. Then I had to turn them all over and spray the other sides of them. It was annoying, but it really looked great when it was finished.

      @@PlantBasedDads Thank you! A couple of questions. Did you sand the pvc pipes first for adhesion or use any kind of primer? Do you remember the make or exactly which spray can you used from Home Depot? Thank you!

    • @PlantBasedDads
      @PlantBasedDads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I did not sand anything or prime anything. I just painted them. Let's hope that doesn't come back to bite me later on. The paint was actually a primer/paint in one can, but I didn't buy it for that reason. Here is a link to the paint I used. I needed 3 cans for the whole project.
      www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Universal-11-oz-All-Surface-Satin-Black-Spray-Paint-and-Primer-in-One-342511/307244963
      The conduit was already a flat grey so it really doesn't need primer. The metal boxes could probably have used some primer first but I just didn't use it. You probably should use spray primer on the metal pieces that you are painting. Good luck.

      It is a regular outdoor grey metal junction box that has 4 holes, 2 in the top and 2 in the bottom. I got all the parts I needed to make it work. It didnt come like that. I ran the conduit up from the top of one of the holes to the switch above it and then the plug from the outlet on the house to one of the holes in conduit below it and tied them together in the box. I put a weather seal and a cover on it and screwed it together. I just went to Home Depot and pieced it all together.
