Whenever Shane uses a term that I associate with the inner circles of meme culture, I'm reminded again that he's every bit as online as the rest of us and we are not safe from the all-seeing Shane
i've had a senegal parrot for about 20 years now and he doesn't talk much but perfectly mimics the microwave, phones, our cats different meows, he used to whistle to our old dog amd call her to his cage
it’s always so good to hear people talking about struggles they have had with their dogs, so i really appreciate steven talking about his journey with ruth! my parents adopted a miniature poodle at the end of 2021 and it took a lot of work to get to the point where we loved her and she loved us. and i’m so excited for ryan and mari!!
Shane’s description of cockatiels was the most relatable thing I’ve ever heard. I have never felt so understood. The shriek of a cockatiel is not one you ever forget. The rattle in your eardrums. And it is constant. I still love my cockatiel obviously, he’s great and so clever. But he can be REALLY loud when he wants to be. I was a bit shocked to hear the cockatiels only came out of the cage once, but hopefully they went to a more experienced owner after being rehomed. Birds are not easy to care for 😅
The value to me of pets is both companionship and the reward of caring for someone other than myself. I have been a cat person for a long time and it is usually like having a roommate with occasional head scritches. Now I’ve been fostering a senior german shepherd mix for 9 months and it is a whole new story. I still don’t think I can illustrate exactly the “value” - but one anecdote that might explain: his vocabulary is limited, and in the mornings he is desperate to go outside and go potty. He also knows the phrase “give me a hug?” and will come fast from the front door with his tail wagging like crazy and come stand between my legs for a hug as many times as I ask even first thing in the morning. A cat will aways put his own comfort in front of our relationship, but dogs’ priorities are swapped there. My heart feels so much bigger with both my guys.
You're probably being hyperbolic, but cats do need to be exercised and taken care of in the same way dogs do. They are generally less maintenance but the idea that they're extemely low maintenance pets that only need food and occasional snuggles isn't true. They need to be played with regularly, groomed if they have longer fur, etc. And they're just as affectionate and loving as dogs, they just aren't at your constant beck and call. They show affection differently (following you around, wanting to be close to you but not always on/touched by you, spending time with you even while having their own schedules and routines etc). And some cats are VERY affectionate in the more traditional 'doggy' sense. Saying they're like 'roomates with occasional head scritches' is painting with a very broad and inaccurate brush. Sorry, it just kinda annoys me when people imply that cats are detached, non-affectionate animals that barely need any care and thus have an inferior ability to connect with you than a dog. That just isn't true. It isn't a fair comparison. They're less work than dogs and like you said they won't drop everything for you every time, but that isn't a bad thing and it doesn't mean the connections you make with them aren't as deep. And it doesn't mean they don't need close attention and care.
Every time I hear someone got a golden doodle because they are ‘hypoallergenic’ it makes me want to scream. I work with dogs, golden doodles are not hypoallergenic, they are also a dna mess that causes so many issues, and often are aggressive if not trained properly at a young age, and yknow the daily brushing and monthly grooming is very expensive. They can be lovely dogs and I’m glad he got a rescue one, but please educate yourselves on golden doodles before just buying one! (More for people who will watch this and get excited and say they want a golden doodle)
Can we have a series where we just send Steven pictures of our dogs and see if he can nail their personalities just by sight? Also.... *The Boys talking about how crazy Australian Shepherds can be.* Me: Imagine taking home the giant pup of a friend"s Husky litter when she begs you to give a him home, look down at those big blue eyes and thinking, "Loki. Your name is Loki." Then that puppy grows into a dog that weighs around 110lbs and is twice as tall as his siblings. I'm talking lean muscle not size caused by floof. Huskies are known for acting like dramatic toddlers. But imagine a two year old that big. Thank Frigga I'm a stay at home mom cuz now three years later my home would have been in pieces had I not been able to give so much attention to the Dog of Mischief. ❤
Good for you for going to a shelter and getting a dog that way unfortunately your puppy probably won't be hypoallergenic if it has more golden retriever in it
Awww! We have a Pyredoodle (Pyrenees x Poodle) from an accidental litter, and she is the SWEETEST baby. She’s also a total clown, I have yet to meet a Doodle that wasn’t. Have fun!
I was hiking in some fog/mist in Yosemite and it was the most beautiful, magical and memorable hikes I’ve done. There’s something about seeing the fog/mist change in front of your eyes that remind you of how ephemeral life is. It was an almost meditative experience.
even though the pain of letting go of my dog was something ill never forget, i could never imagine not growing up with her as a kid and just living my life with her everyday. it’ll always outweigh the pain at the end of the day to me
I agree with Shane about hiking through woods in the fog. It's a whole atmosphere. One of my favorite vacation moments was hiking through foggy woods at Shenandoah National Park.
I loved hearing about Shane's birds in more detail. I had a lot of birds growing up so I am always ready to talk birds. I had a series of canaries - Gabriel, Nikki, Cirrus, and Ishmael - and a pair of finches and a pair of parakeets. But the wildest thing was when we had a dozen button quail in a giant enclosure in the middle of our living room. They were right under a big grandfather clock that chimed every fifteen minutes, and the quail got so agitated and yelled back at the clock - every fifteen minutes, for years until we eventually rehomed them. We did once make very tiny fried eggs with the quail eggs though.
Not a golden doodle😭 as a dog groomer and someone well versed in the dog world- they are not guaranteed hypoallergenic. No dogs are 100% hypoallergenic. Certain breeds can cause less irritation than others, but the allergens come from dander so it’s more about coat and skin maintenance. Doodles can also have so many health issues due to unethical breeding and to top it off- they are extremely high maintenance when it comes to grooming. Make sure to stay on top of it! That being said, I’m so glad they chose to rescue rather than buy. They can be some of the sweetest and loving dogs… if taken care of properly!
When do we get to see the puppy?! My husband and I have a Goldendoodle due to my abundance of allergies. His name is Gus, short for Burton Guster named after one of our favorite characters from the tv show Psych.
The way steven explains about a love for dog is actually similar for a human child, but 100x more intense. and I have both. you love them so intensely, they become a big part of your heart and you can no longer imagine life without them.
Ryan offering his knowledge of tampon companies is heart warming. Also I guessed San Fran! I spent some time in Newfoundland as well and it is SUPER foggy. the fog rolls in like a tidal wave, it's incredible.
Hey Shane, just wanted you to know I also lost a pet in my arms and that when I say that to people, they never understand. I been watching you guys since Buzzfeed and wasn't till this ep that I realised That Ryan doesn't get it. No hard feelings Ryan but feeling hopeless ... really all you know left to do is comfort that animal, when it's gone, it's hard to explain, you sit there unsure weather it's maybe just asleep, hard to even check. I'm just trying to say that I feel like that joke started before you knew Shane, you often say Shane is fearless and I've found people who seem that way usally just have thick skin because of some real hurt in life. anyway love ya all, not having a go. Edit. I click play again and shane just said ' watched the light go out of his eyes' ... I'm sorry brother, Glad that bird had you though, better than leaving the world alone.
Woo can’t wait for the dog pic reveal. As a girl and boy dog rescue parent, I don’t have preferences but my girl dog is the easiest, chillest and low maintenance.
As someone who went from cat and dog family to converting their entire family to a lizard, fish, frog, snake, bird, etc. family...I can say that I love carrying for creatures that either show love in different ways so you get to find more about yourself, or animals that just look amazing and are so completely different from myself that the fact I get to care for them is an entire honor.
@@unabashedlybashful ooh, I would love a discussion of the contestants. Sam Campbell is clearly just that weird, but can Lucy Beaumont (or ANYONE?) be that strange, truly?
I’d love to hear all about Shane’s “unusual” pets!!! As someone who has pet rats and adores them, it’s always exciting to hear about animals outside the usual cat and dog
I named my cat Steve because I thought it was hilarious and it continues to make me laugh every day, especially when I introduce him to people. My other cat is named Queso because I couldn’t decide if human or food pet names were funnier and just went with both.

Ryan: Tells an engaging and relevant anecdote involving swords and fights on the basketball court. Shane and Steven: Shut up nerd, you talk too much. Shane: What you guys think about fog?
I love both cats and dogs but only have cats cuz I live in a condo. That said, after seeing what my cousin went thru with an Australian Shepherd puppy, I realize I can never deal with such an active breed. Cats are soooo chill in comparison.
I have 10 dogs, I show and train them, and my whole career is dedicated to dogs. I've learned I can't listen to average joe pet owners discuss dogs it's like pouring bleach in my ear. 😂😂 I appreciate Steven's enthusiasm though.
Being from the Pacific Northwest, it’s not actually that foggy here sometimes a forest hike you’ll have some fog. However, the Snohomish Valley will fill up with fog and it just tends to sit for a really long time when it is foggy.
Fun story about the fog in San Fran: my dad was a sailor in the navy in 1980 and had a day of shore leave while his ship was docked for minor repairs. He figured to kill time he'd check out a new movie, The Fog, on a pier movie theater. The movie was about monsters coming out of fog over water to kill people, and it was set in California. He wasn't one to be freaked out by movies, but when he exited the theater... he was surrounded by heavy fog. On a pier. And he had to navigate his way, through the fog, back to his ship. Alone. He says he still hasn't been able to rewatch that movie.
Thank you for mentioning Maine, my home state!! And yes, Bar Harbor is gorgeous. I look forward to Watcher content every week. It’s truly comforting to me. Love you guys!
PERFECT PUPPY NAME!!! Ryan…I have the perfect name!!! It incorporates a human name and refers to your favorite snack as well. How about Orville (Deadenbacher, if ya wanna be spooky). Mari & Orvi!

Now why the heck did y'all click bait with a shiba inu and then reveal it was a freakin doodle 😭 Probs for adopt don't shop tho Very impressed with Steven's knowledge of dog care and the requirements certain breeds have! Love that he gives his cattle dogs little jobs, that's awesome!
dogs are so worth it they are so loving and amazing they make life worth living. They make you less anxious, less depressed, live longer. They are just so worth it. Shane if you adore Obe you will love a dog, you just need to find the right dog. That will fit your lifestyle and needs. Because each dog is different. Also my girl dogs are so chill. But I've had boy dogs and they were also affectionate. Very often though you will see the dog prefer the opposite gender (not always but a lot). Some dogs are not needy and some are exceptionally needy (don't get goldens, labs, doodles if you don't want needy) You will need to get a low prey drive dog and I suggest a puppy or a dog that has already been exposed to and found to be good with cats. I had a dog that was motherly to a cat we found on the side of the street. They adored and loved each other.
Nothing has ever captured walking on a mysterious foggy day as well as the animation Hedgehog in the Fog has in my humble opinion, it is hauntingly beautiful and should definitely be watched by any fog enthusiasts out there. Oh, and as I write this I just got a dense fog advisory on my phone.
As a pet lover, I have always loved having animals but the end of life is always so sad. I had a dog for 18 years that died of old age. Rescued an old dog about 4 years after and took in this soaking wet cat during a storm that ended up being pregnant and having kittens. Delivered the kittens in a week and the same week I found out my dog was suffering and dying from cancer, out of nowhere that same week my dog lashed out on one of the kittens over food, killing it in front of my eyes and then by the end of the week I had to say my goodbyes to the dog. Been two years and haven't gotten a dog since. 😞 Being a pet lover is rewarding, scary, crazy and unpredictable, but I wouldn't give it away for the world.
Happy that you got a dog, Ryan! Unfortunately my family and I are in the pack of having to rehome a dog. He would attack my sisters and I as a puppy. It eventually got to the point where he attacked me 3 times in one day. We gave him a new home where he is a hunting dog now, which yup you could tell. We learned after that his father was headstrong and alpha motivated so was the pup. That situation was hard on us, but we eventually got a rescue who is the sweetest dog ever, energetic but so gentle when he plays with our Bostie. I hope that your dog and you are happy and healthy.
This is the first time I've watched the podcast, and I really like it. Good flow of banter :) I've been listening and playing Surroundead, which is a chill game, and it's good times.
I relate to Ryan so much in this episode, I have been told on multiple occasions that I'm easy to hang out with because I do all the talking, I don't know if it's a compliment or not
the knowledge that shane grew up in a non-traditional pet family explains a lot for me
I said almost the same thing to my husband when we listened to this! Lol
now i get what makes me a shaniac lmao. non-traditional pet people can sense each other lol!
The dog convo brought a whole new Steven out. I have literally never heard him emote so much before
This is the truest thing I've ever heard 😂

Shane hating on PT Barnum, mentioning Ghosts and Taskmaster??? he has the EGOT of my heart
Shane's "LEMME GUESS ONE!" then "i wouldn't have guessed any of those people..." is so iconic.
For someone so afraid of ghosts, Ryan sure isn't afraid of Shane haunting him in the future.
Ryan realizes that strangers alive or dead are scarier than any ghost of someone you know hahaha
I love that Ryan got a shelter dog!
Ryan very worriedly asking "a shy guy?" to Steven is so sweet hahah. We all hope we'll get little shy guys.
Shouts out to Matt Real for trying to keep these oddballs on track.
Ahh poor Shane and his bird. I knew as soon as he mentioned Ryan was going to say something about him eating it lol.
I don't like that they make fun of his pain😢.justice for shane!

Shane’s description of cockatiels was the most relatable thing I’ve ever heard. I have never felt so understood. The shriek of a cockatiel is not one you ever forget. The rattle in your eardrums.

My Mondays are always better with this podcast, and now EVEN BETTER. YAY DOGS 🎉❤
steven: can i hear about this dawg?
can i hear about this dawg?
love that you guys are connected to your pets. in our home they are part of our well being. Kent says Hi!!
Always a good Monday when there's a podwatcher
Happy that you got a dog, Ryan! Unfortunately my family and I are in the pack of having to rehome a dog. He would attack my sisters and I as a puppy. It eventually got to the point where he attacked me 3 times in one day. We gave him a new home where he is a hunting dog now, which yup you could tell. We learned after that his father was headstrong and alpha motivated so was the pup. That situation was hard on us, but we eventually got a rescue who is the sweetest dog ever, energetic but so gentle when he plays with our Bostie. I hope that your dog and you are happy and healthy.
Seeing a movie in theaters - it is an excuse to eat popcorn at least. Love it!
Are these usually this long?! Awesome!
I need to watch the last one again, i was more listening than anything..
This is the first time I've watched the podcast, and I really like it. Good flow of banter :) I've been listening and playing Surroundead, which is a chill game, and it's good times.
The upcoming mystery files season woooooo!!
Steven, it's almost like having a child. or very close. It's also the love they give back.
I relate to Ryan so much in this episode, I have been told on multiple occasions that I'm easy to hang out with because I do all the talking, I don't know if it's a compliment or not
i tested positive for COVID today and pod watcher definitely saved my mental health on my first day in quarantine
