    This is the definition of a good review! Covers strengths, weaknesses and all in-between. Does not try to sell the product. The video tries to make the viewer understand the product and check if the product is designed for his/her needs. All Hi-Fi gear reviewers should learn how to do their job from this man! Congratulations!

    We are a Perlisten dealer in Toronto, Canada. I believe you have captured a lot of the characteristics of this excellent speaker in your detailed and thorough review.
    One other advantage that we've found is that the limited vertical output, wide and consistent horizontal dispersion, and the unusually high max sustained output make these very well suited to home theatre, especially for clients who value quality music reproduction as well. The in-wall version of the S7 is especially impressive. The flat response in the under 80Hz range is not as important in a multichannel theatre installation as the assumption is that there are multiple subs that will take care of that range.
    Keep up the great work!

    The sensitivity is actually 3dB lower than what they're publishing. Some manufacturers are sneaky with the "2.83V" specification and apply it to loudspeakers with a nominal impedance less than 8 ohms. Per Ohm's Law, P = V^2/R, so at 1W, these should be 89.2dB at 1W/1m.

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

      To be clear, assuming the S7t meets its specification, the speaker has the sensitivity they are publishing which is 92 db @2.83 volts @ 1 meter. We believe you mean, "the S7t would have a lower sensitivity if specified as is common using the metric "output at 1 meter with 1 watt input". That is correct. There is a debate about which metric is better. The logic of the voltage spec, we believe, is that most amplifiers are voltage limited but can put out more current and more wattage as impedance falls. Thus the voltage-based sensitivity spec limits the variable that is limited at the amplifier in an attempt to improve comparisons, which seems to be the aim of your comment. A wattage-based spec on the other hand is anchored in a variable that changes with impedance. So, if we compare an 89 db wattage spec 8 ohm speaker to an 89 db wattage spec 4 ohm speaker, it would seem that they have the same sensitivity, but with a good amplifier the consumer will have +3db output capability in theory (if the speaker has the ability to handle max amp power). There is no perfect answer at least without knowledge of specific amp/speaker combinations, but we do not believe it is automatically correct to characterize the voltage sensitivity spec as sneaky given the logic behind it.

      I switched to class D years ago. Impedance shmedance.

    • @janetyer7147
      @janetyer7147 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Voltage sensitivity should be specified, and not power sensitivity, because the vast majority of loudspeaker amplifiers, when operating below clipping levels, are designed to provide a constant gain in voltage, and not a constant gain in power, while delivering current drawn by the loudspeaker load impedance, which most usually is not flat with respect to frequency. The amplifier's input signal voltage determines the output signal voltage, and the load determines the associated current. It is the combibation of both which produce the power output of the amplifier. That is why modern practice specifies loudspeaker voltage sensitivity rather than power sensitivity.
      Consider also that a loudspeaker's frequency response is a graph of SPL with respect to frequency when driven at a constant RMS voltage with respect to frequency, and not constant power with respect to frequency. Power sensitivity is largely irrelevant.
      Voltage sensitivity is what should be specified. 2.83Vrms is most often the reference voltage, as that is the squareroot of 8 rounded to 2 decimal places, and is the voltage across an 8 Ohm resistor that will draw amperes at the reciprocal of the square root of 8, for a product of 1 Watt dissipated into that load resistor.

    I'm still waiting for a video about this listening room. It looks good. The acoustic treatments are very attractive although I wonder why diffusers weren't used between the speakers. Also wondering what was impaled during construction, as was mentioned. Please give us the story!

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      To answer your diffuser question: absorption is used in the middle of the front wall because this is a first reflection point and fairly close in time to the speakers. The Haas window means that early reflections are ideally and importantly absorbed to avoid phantom images that aid the ear in locating the sound sources. This absorption also contributes to getting the T30 time in the proper range around 200-250 ms. To do this successfully the absorption must be broadband.

    Excellent review, Tom. At a dealer here in SE Michigan, I compared these a/b with the Magico A5, and preferred the less expensive S7t. I thought they created a more believable and expansive soundstage, and they also seemed to provide greater resolution How would you summarize the comparison of your reference A5's and the S7t's?

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The A5 has a more traditional bass alignment, so some people may prefer that. Others with smaller rooms may prefer the S7t. I do think the soundstage of the S7t is slightly better. I think the resolution differences exist but it isn't A is better than B. The A5 seems to do detail down to somewhat lower levels. Depending on the room, you may not hear this and the S7t limited vertical dispersion may help. The S7t tweeter has something special going on, though I fear that with a weak front end some people will reject it as too bright (a common, understandable error when knowing the source of phenomena is hard because stereo is a system).

    • @PaulAndoni-k6q
      @PaulAndoni-k6q 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your input. I understand your point about the S7t''s bass. At the dealer, the speakers were placed well into the room, at least 8 feet from the front wall. It just doesn't seem as if they extend to levels indicated by specs. I see reviews to the contrary, but I just didn't hear it. Again, could be room- dependent. Agreed, tweeter is excellent, and could have led to the Perlistens sounding more open and expressive relative to the A5, which seemed a bit dark/closed-in by direct comparison. There was no harshness with the expensive Nagra monoblock amps driving the speakers.

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ One often overlooked problem is the “lateral seating null”. A room, for example, that is 15’ wide will have a bass null around 37 Hz. The null will extend up or down from that a bit. A speaker that is generally flat in room, like the S7t, will be bass shy compared to a speaker that is a bit elevated, even on bass at say 45 Hz. In our listening room 2, the S7t is flat to 28 hz (the lateral null is at 22 hz). But the balance of the S7 vs say the A5 is different in the mid bass (say 50-80 Hz), meaning that the flatness of the S7 doesn’t compensate for the room issue as well as the A5. In a different room it could be the opposite. This, through no fault of dealers, is one of the hardest things about dealer auditions: their rooms are different than yours. There are of course many different room issues in the bass region. That’s why it is one of our 6 major audio issues.

    • @PaulAndoni-k6q
      @PaulAndoni-k6q 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Very interesting, and yet another reason why somebody may purchase a speaker based on an audition at a dealer, yet be disappointed at the performance at home. Conversely, maybe one avoids a purchase of a speaker that would've been the perfect fit in their room. This is one reason I am a proponent of adjustable bass levels, such as what I have on my goldenear Triton One.R. i've been intrigued by a potential upgrade, and have therefore had the chance to experience the STt, the A5, and the Capello 100, from a manufacturer I was not very familiar with - Gauder Akustic. The Cappello 100 has several levels of bass adjustment, and was VERY impressive sounding at first listen. Just makes so much sense to me, because somebody may want/need the speakers 18 inches from the front wall, and somebody may prefer them placed 10 feet from the wall. Adjustment allows more optimal in-home performance from a speaker, while still delivering many of the positives one may have experienced during a dealer audition.

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ Doing the adjustment well is hard. But most OEMs don’t seem to have considered whether the non-adjusted results are worse. We are currently investigating solutions. DSP correction should hold real promise, but, as OEMs suggest, can yield disappointment. Subs should be able to help, but aren’t often built for music and room correction (we have Perlisten subs coming that seem a possible exception, Magico subs are clearly intended for smoothness, not extension per se).

    Ears are more affected by amplitude differences at higher frequencies as opposed to timing, were you referencing some new study?

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There are several studies, not really new (but post-2000), indicating that the ear/brain can detect transient information (simulated as clicks) at higher frequencies than it perceives tones. We don't think these suggest that amplitude differences in higher frequencies where tonal information can be perceived are not significant. The real point was that we are unclear why so many designs have rising output above 4-6k. But it is surprisingly common.

      Custom made. But there are blind screw-in ceiling attachment methods if your panels are fiberglass. Anchors are from Rotofast. Be sure to buy the right type and number for the weight of your panels (they have different types with different load capabilities). Having the wrong type is why we improvised the custom brackets (that and a deadline).

  • @rasta.j
    @rasta.j 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    How do they compare to Magico, such as the S5?

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Voicing of the S5 is warmer in the mid-bass. Treble balance of the Perlisten is slightly more brilliant. The S5 has an octave to octave smoothness in output that is hard to match, but the S7t comes close. Resolution with the S5 is slightly higher. The S7t is designed to reduce the impact of the room a bit more (limited vertical dispersion) than the S5 so that might be a factor or not depending on your room (same with bass balance). Related to this, the S5 is designed for large-ish rooms, so you may not need that and the S3 or S2 could work or might even work better depending. We just heard the S2 and the S family is definitely a family sonically.

    This is a good review. However, it seems you still have some homework to do. You’re complaining about the speaker’s low-frequency response when placing it 2 meters from the front wall, even though it was likely designed to be placed about 25 to 50 centimeters from the wall. Looking at the frequency response, it appears to have a tapered design with an extended bass shelf. If that’s the case, your placement is incorrect. Have you asked the manufacturer how to use it properly or what their design intention was? Because, contrary to standard designs, these speakers won’t become boomy if placed closer to the wall probably providing well low end extension.

    • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, we talked to Perlisten’s CEO and chief engineer. They pointed out that the design assumes a somewhat smaller room than we use and thus assumes room gain starting at a higher frequency. We can’t change the dimensions of the room, of course. All users (and reviewers) face the fact that room specifics will change bass response and so reporting on bass is hard. We tried to therefore focus on the unusual element of the Perlisten design which will give it slightly less mid-bass output than is common in wide band speakers. Not a complaint, but an observation. That is the key point which will consistently hold up we think. Whether that is helpful or not is subject to conditions in the user’s room that we can’t know. We chose the positioning used in our room based on thousands of simulations of loudspeaker-listener positioning and chose positions that yield the smoothest results. Hope that helps.

      You can if you compare sound to a known reference. Quantification and objective are not the same; observation and subjective are not the same, though you are correct they are often confused. • @TASmagazine
      @TASmagazine  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We don’t know of such a thing. Our goal in reviews is to objectively observe how components sound when compared to real music in a real space (the absolute sound). By enumerating these sonic variables viewers can use their experience to pick the deviations from believability that bother them the least (and some listeners will want certain colorations because they like or think they prefer them). The ‘math’ of this factor analysis in each listener’s makeup affected by aural sensitivities, experience, existing equipment, preferences for music and preferences for recording eras. We do argue that the highest satisfaction on average comes from the lowest coloration or distortion, but theoretically there could be listeners entirely focused on, say, pre-1965 classical or jazz which might merit an inverse tone curve to compensate for the balance of recordings typically made in the early stereo era.
