And bracing your hands -- against each other, against the table, upper arms against your chest, just _not_ floating in midair -- is important, too; your body isn't designed for your arms to be unsupported for detail work, and it gets hard quickly to keep them still relative to each other.
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm building the Tamiya 1/48 scale BF-109E 4/7. Using Quinta cockpit decals for the first time. Love them; they are very easy to work with.
Incredible. I’m not usually a aircraft builder, though I have a few aircraft in my stash. This is incredible. Amazing detail. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you can do a canapé tutorial, so I can become a certified airplane builder lol
Very cool decals. Seat belts, too? Fascinating. My current stash (about 300-400 kits) is all W.W.-II AFVs, so I don't really need any more kits to work on. Even so, it was fascinating to see how much detail you can add to an aircraft with well made decals. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I’ve used them on a Tamiya Corsair and FA190D9 - love them and they are also my first go-to if available. I’ve found that you have to cover the plastic surface well (but not thickly) or there is lifting/peeling
I seem to remember back in the ‘80s that there were some kits released that were just cockpits. They were large, probably 1/16 or maybe 1/8(is that possible), and extremely detailed. As I recall, there was an F-15, F-16, maybe an F-4, and I think something from WWII. That was just around the time that I was winding down my modeling hobby and started adulting more full time. Sigh. I stumbled across some of these videos just a couple days ago and I believe that if I’m actually able to retire, I’m going to have a serious look into starting this up again.
Boy howdy, Plastic Modeling sure has come a long way since the days of Verlinden and using bits of sprue to create raised details for cockpits and such! 👍🙂
I thinking about modeling again and your site is very helpful thanks and I had over 300 different models but that was when I was 12 to 16 yrs old but know IAM 59 My first plane is going to be a Aircobra model because that was my first one but I'll keep watching your site thanks 😎👍
@@SpruesNBrews absolutely gorgeous. Rather pricey but well... I expected nothing else. Pity they have no kit for the Mig - 21MF. Will build one in the near future and thought about trying out these decals. Maybe next time then.
Yes they do lift the model with the detail on the decal, i was going to get some myself till i found they come from Russia! so will have to wait till we have peace in the World again! Nice video BTW
OOH man. Thanks for these. I literally could have used these 3 days ago on my B109 build for your competition. lol Oh well. I'll definitely use these going forward when I can.
I cannot say how much l love these. I am working on one of Tamiya's P 38 and the instrument panel alone justifies using them. The only issue l had was with the seat harnesses...l snapped each trying to get them to conform. As far as a sealer, l'd do it by brush especially if the instrument panel is attached. As it may take away from the glass appearance on the dials. Also, no need for any setting solutions.
ooo I haven't airbrushed with Tamiya paints in quite a while - but I'd recommend checking out Andy's Hobby Headquarters here on TH-cam. I know he sprays Tamiya quite a bit & should have some good recommendations 👍
I know this is an old video but I’m currently building up the border models bf 109 g6 and was wondering where you got the clear pieces for the gun sight
My dad got my building models an .049 powered bigger planes when I was blind for 3 years of 3 eye surgeries! Dad come home an check my days work then we'd set up tomorrow build plan. For those 3 years I didn't know if I would ever see again, so when bandages removed I we found out I could see. We celebrated by flying airplanes we built.
Another fantastic build video mate. I was just wondering what material you used to make the clear reflector on the gunsight? I'm currently building the kit and I'm not keen on using the grey one they include. Cheers and keep producing your top notch content.
Thank you! I used a bit of the clear plastic backing that came with the cockpit detail set to cut a few pieces for the reflectors. Worked out pretty well!
This is a really big model, you could almost find an old Volkswagen and use those instruments. I like Raymonds comment below about availability on the P38. Darn, there goes the balance of my August beer money . How about making an instrument panel from plastic sheets and saving this panel for another model. You make it look so easy.
I’ve been using Quinta Studio 3D decals for quite a while now although their have 2 contenders that I know of they are hard to beat. Now since many countries have applied sanctions to Russia you have to order their decals from Azerbaijan then you will receive your order from Russia. How cool is that?
I've never built an x-wing, so unfortunately I'm not sure! I would recommend checking out a scale model distributor like spruebrothers.com or megahobby.com
It’s not all about what you can see but just knowing how awesome it looks. Really are you ever going to pick up the model and examine the cockpit? No. It more for pleasure and isn’t for everyone, also don’t help if it’s cheap
Eh I disagree - I think that any product with the potential to increase accessibility to this level of detail across a range of skill levels is a good thing. Making one piece of the process a little easier for some doesn't inherently negatively impact somebody who is interested in doing it the "hard" way. I think this hobby is at its best when it's available & enjoyable to everyone 😁
@@SpruesNBrews I never said it was a BAD thing, just that it makes the work of the rivet counters and scratch builders less spectacular. I remember when I was a kid, model kits were for kids. Now they’re for adults and you can easily spend several hundred dollars on one model kit. Increasing detail while not increasing the skill level needed only works if the add-on is available for the kits you have. P.S. I do think these are pretty neat, myself.
I don't think it's right to ostracize a member of our scale modeling community simply because of where they were born - boycotting a small scale modeling business wont hurt the powers that be over there, but it will certainly cripple a small business owner. The war cannot be blamed on innocent civilian; our defense must be aimed at large corporations & those who profit off of Putin's crimes.
@@SpruesNBrews honestly I think that is the only chance. Unless the people of Russia will feel the pressure, Putin will still have their support. Money from those businesses are flowing back to the regime anyway through taxes and other 'payments'. This is the least we can do for Ukraine.
Honestly, these 3D decals seem like cheating to me, scale modelling should be about creating these effects yourself, not having these effects be manufactured and you just glue them on, yes they look great, but I still don't like them for this reason
Please dont swap painting skill for money outlay. How is it entertaining and what is the viewer learing compared to someone doing simple improvements and painting ? I get it .. both ways but one is not you . M
They way they layered the harnesses for the seat is incredible.
Right? Really clever design!
