- William Tyndale (1491 to 1536) was the first person to translate and publish the New Testament into English 500 years ago (1525). He was a leading figure in the Reformation but had to go into hiding, being branded as a traitor and a rebel. He was pursued by government officials across the continent, was betrayed by a friend, arrested and imprisoned. On October 6th 1936 he died a martyr's death outside a castle near Brussels.
