I accidentally made the best low carb bread I've ever made. It was sooooo close to regular bread - just a tiny bit chewier. I was making a lupin flour reversion of Dierdre's low carb bread but didn't have enough lupin flour so I made up the difference with almond flour. Then, I didn't have enough oat fiber, so I made up the difference with bamboo fiber. It was just a matter of a few grams of each ingredient, but wow! I'll probably never be able to duplicate it, but I'll definitely be trying.
Given the price of most keto breads and the questionable ingredients in a number of them, I agree that there are many chaffle recipes that make a better bread substitute (several of which can be found on this channel). But not everyone has the time or aptitude for the kitchen. It's for those folks I do these reviews. 😉 And thanks for the donation. 😊👍
I love these bread and tortilla testing videos. Having a legit keto bread and especially a legit keto tortilla makes keto way easier. I'm probably not paying $10 for a loaf of bread but happy to pay for one for the testing. Thanks
Watching you hold up that bread slice reminded me of the backstage scene in "This is Spinal Tap" where Nigel keeps trying to figure out how to make a sandwich with regular sized cold cuts but tiny bread. I can picture him folding the meat and the bread, so funny!
This is another time you’ve messed with your own possible glucose spikes for testing purposes. I absolutely appreciate that, & glad to see good results from these breads! Thank you so much. (But had to chuckle a little when I saw the small size of some of those pieces, especially after toasting. Are you sure that wasn’t Barbie doll bread they sold you? 😂)
Clean Ingredients usually cost more. It’s not a surprise that this bread would be 2-3 times as expensive as regular bread. Thanks for making this video 😀
Thank you Steve for all of these videos. I've been eating the Base Culture Keto and 7 Seed & Nut for a month or two, and they do scratch my bread itch! I agree with your review wholeheartedly. Fortunately, they are carried by one of our regular supermarkets here in New England, Big Y. They're not cheap - in the $8 range. But I eat very little bread anyway, so it's worth it. I don't tend to eat sandwiches, but if I do, I lightly toast the bread which makes it easy to slice into two faces. I love that the Base Culture breads are not filled with modified starch, which I don't totally trust in terms of glucose. It's great to have buttered toast again and not blow my low carb life. For me, I think the Keto and 7 nut & seed are the best I've found so far.
The reason for the spike difference between the first and second bread was that the second one contained honey. The third one did not have honey either.
Out of the lineup of the Base Culture breads in your review, I’ve only ever had the Keto version. Totally agree that it’s great when toasted and buttered, but it’s even better when buttered and grilled. Thanks again, Steve, for taking another one for the team!
Yay! Thank you for doing this video 👍 I have been eating the 7 Nut & Seed Base Culture for a few weeks now. Good to know there is a stable blood glucose response ❤
I actually love these breads! I’m not really looking for something that tastes like bread cuz that really isn’t going to happen since I don’t eat wheat. I am able to get these through my food buying club co-op so can get it for a bit less. I only eat them a time or two a month so I keep it in the freezer and just tap it on the counter to dislodge the slices I need. A loaf can last me a few months, no problem. It’s small but filling and makes a tasty grilled cheese or BLT. I like the cinnamon raisin one too but only one slice at a time due to the raisins. Of course toasted and slathered with butter! 😋 Mayo or other condiments also help with the dryness you mentioned. Thanks for the review!
Yayyyy! Thank you! I have only tried the Base Culture Keto and the 7 Seed variety, and my winner is the Keto toasted. Sometimes, I just need a piece of toast. The bread does go on sale occasionally, maybe is $8 per loaf at WF. I've been fortunate to have Publix Greenwise in the SE that occasionally puts it on BOGO. I fill up my freezer then. I have heard that it holds up well in French Toast. Thanks again!
For those who make their own bread and like to experiment, I noticed sauerkraut in the “Sourdough “. I wonder if that could be used , or the brine, in home recipes to give a sour taste that seems to be missing in this version… maybe without honey and different quantities, it might give that “tang” As far as price, in my mind, since this bread is a treat and shouldn’t be an everyday indulgence, I think over a few weeks of having an occasional egg and sausage breakfast sandwich or a small BLT, it’s not really a bank breaker. Heck, when I treat myself to wings out at a restaurant, it’s $20 these days for that one meal.
Thanks Steve (and Rebecca) for the Base Culture review. It was the first bread that I tried on my keto journey. I was not impressed. 'Didn't love the taste, texture, size or price. I was really craving bread and hoped I'd find it more enjoyable. 'Still have some in my freezer that I've been reluctant to throw away, but also reluctant to eat. These days I'll either make chaffles or go with Carb0naut's (net 2g carb) seeded bread when I crave sandwich or piece of toast. It may not be as clean or keto friendly as Base Culture but it's much more like normal sandwich bread.
Levels app is like a toy that says 'batteries not included' in that you still need to have a CGM, sold separately. Correct? Doctors don't write prescriptions for them unless you are on medication. Someday they will be available over the counter just like the old glucose monitors are now. I'll have to wait until then. That's why I love your videos and your explanation of the device.
Levels will supply you with CGMs (and a prescription). My hope is that eventually, Apple and Android build non-invasive glucose monitoring into their watches. I know both are working on it. At that point, if Levels is smart, they'll partner with one or both companies and offer their app as a reasonably priced subscription.
I appreciate your bread testing and reviews. It is always enlightening when you do these. I had hopes for the sourdough version, but will keep looking. Thank you for saving me $$ for food that ends up in the trash.
Thank you Steve for doing the test on the Basic Culture bread! I was curious about the sourdough version but won’t be buying it thanks to your review. I think the spike is due to the honey? Just a thought. I myself want a more pronounced sourdough flavor when eating a sourdough bread. I have purchased the Base Culture bread. I like the clean ingredients, but I agree it’s a bit pricey for what you get. Although, even if you make Keto bread yourself the loaves usually are pretty small as well. Thank you again for your thoughts on this bread.
Thank you so much for the reviews you’re the best! God bless you! Is there a way that we can make keto bread in the bread machine? I would love it if you could show us how to do that.❤️🙏
Thanks for your review, Steve. I love Base culture, but Low Carb Avenue - Artisan Keto Bread is my go-to store bought loaf. I'd love to see a review of this one. There's a bit of rye flour in it, but it's probably minimal considering it's one of the last ingredients. Fingers crossed you can review it some day.
Yeah, I just stumbled upon it on Amazon and thought I'd give it a try. It's great! Seriously tastes the closest thing I've had to a wheat bread with good chew. @@SeriousKeto
When you showed the slice of bread, I immediately thought of the Ken Jeong so small gif haha. Feels like overall, not that great of a deal. I feel even if I was local to be able to get it, it is pretty high up for price.
I realize this is a "me" problem. I cannot thank you enough for editing your chewing time. I am astounded by the number of channels who spend a large amount of time chewing. One very popular channel usually chewing with their mouth open. Again, maybe only a "me" problem. I hope your chewing edits will flow across the TH-cam universe!
I'm with you! I've had some cooking channels that I've followed that have totally been ruined by commenters complaining that the creator isn't tasting the food and eating some on camera. Huh? Seemed like a plus to me, but they say they want to see if it's good - as if they can tell by watching... But the point is the creators cave and eat on camera and I've had to unsubscribe from some. Not only are some folks unattractive chewers, they don't cut (or at least turn down) their mikes so the noise is atrocious! And I'm NOT one of those people who's sensitive to that. So I'm also grateful, Steve, for your editing!
Price is always a concern ... but I eat very few pieces of bread and this could last me a month or so. Taste will make all the difference. I love sourdough, but sounds like I will be trying nuts and seeds
Important for me is taste and texture followed by carb count. Don't care how many carbs it does or doesn't have if it tastes like bleh. We quit making bread at home because it was either egg or almond, so I buy bread to have neither of those lol
If you get the Brownberry/Arnold/Orowheat brand brand keto bread, you'll notice how thin the slices are. I think that a lot of these companies make serving sizes that allow them to round down on the carb count.
I just priced this at my local Harris Teeter (had it a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed, but thought I should try it again). It was $11.50!!! And it was $11.89 at Lowe's Foods. Yeah...nope. No rest for the wicked. 😂

Such tiny higher carb slices only OK if that’s my only meal!!! ? @SeriousKeto, Have you tried @VictoriasKitchen newest ‘very low NC’ bamboo fiber/pecan flour based flour blend? It gets better each new version😻 Still pricey ingredients, but far more loaves for the investment!
I bought this bread before I saw this video despite the horrid price. It's clean and tastes great, but the slices are tiny and misshapen, and there were huge holes in part of the loaf!
We buy this bread about once maybe twice a month. For the two of us. It’s the only bread we eat other than making a flatbread type bread from fathead dough. Or other home made buns or buscuits. We can buy it at woodmans or a health food store in our town. Festival foods also carries it. It is $9. However, other keto breads upwards of $6-8 so for us the couple extra dollars for a bread that is clean, gluten free is worth it. They have another keto bread but is super high in gross carbs with lots of fiber to net the carbs out. That one isn’t that great. We also buy their buns once in a while.
I have hit goal and maintaining I’ve found net carb bread that we like and good to go It’s actually local and cheaper Always have ears and eyes open for better keto options Thanks for reviews
Don't think $10 a loaf is outrageous, given that this is one of the few best keto breads in the whole country right now. Most people spend more than that every day at a coffee shop or a bar.
