This was so great!!! I've been struggling with Canva and creating the KDP book covers. Had no idea they had book cover templates. lol Your video simplified this so much. Thank you!
that was very informative i can't agree more about creative Fabrica, tangent templates are unbeatable for books and it only cost me £50 approximate for lifetime access. Canva is just as good thanks
Thank you for talking about brand names, as many other channels don't touch on that much. Also many don't speak about changing images to make it your own.
Thank you! Newbie here and struggling to get started. The covers have me so frustrated. Can you tell me how to change the size of cover? Like if I wanted a 5x8 book or a different size? Thank you ❤️☺️
It’s interesting watching how you approach designing book covers. I want to start creating stuff instead of just watching though. I’m just kinda worried that I’ll make mistakes that I can’t fix. How can I make sure that the book cover and the its interior are both the same size? How should I account for bleed or no bleed? I’d like to learn a little bit more about how to get the technical stuff right.
I recommend that you watch my video series on how to publish your first notebook. The process is explained and you will learn how to make your covers and everything else you need. Watch as many tutorials as you can, I spent weeks watching and learning before I started. Good luck!
Would have been nice if there was a way to know exactly the middle point of the front cover so that we could center-align the texts... have had many of my books aligned not right after I upload them onto kdp. Really hard to do the guesswork with bare eyes sometimes.
So jelous you make it so easy. Great job love it. I have issues with finding the tools to help change and keep what youve done to it. But like you said practice. But is there a trick to help me remember where to find the tools? Hope I made some sence. Thank you for your time
Very helpful, indeed and many thanks. One question : How do you create then ISBN barcode and put the ISBN bc in? I know Amazon will. do this automatically with its own numbers but I would like to use my own.
You just place it where Amazon would place their own barcode. Personally I don't see any advantage in using your own, the barcode is just a code for stores to be able to scan the books, as far as I know there is no advantage to having your own. Thank you so much for watching.
I'm just starting out and trying to narrow down the paid software I would need to start creating book covers and interiors. I don't want to sink a lot of money into programs just yet (Creative Fabrica, Affinity Design, Afffinity Publisher for example) and it seems that using Canva Pro and Tangent Templates would cover most of what I would need. If there are better ones for just starting out, what would you recommend? I'm sticking to just two at present. I'm an artist so I would incorporate my own designs as well. The question I have is that your video shows the "look inside" feature for your example book. I don't think that is now available for low content books, is it? I would be using the a+ content. So that being said, would you still put all that additional information on the back cover, or can you put it on the inside of the front cover or the first page? Would you also carry the design to the back cover? I want to say, also, I enjoy your videos and your sweet voice. So straight forward without hype. Also I appreciate the fact that your videos don't have you ohing and ahing or looking shocked on the video cover.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments Judith. I very much appreciate it! Regarding the programs you use, Canva and Tangent Templates are absolutely fine, you need Canva to create your books (although you could also make them on Powerpoint) and Tangent templates is just my all-time favourite tool just for the fact it works out your sizes and all the other things it helps with. So those two tools are the only ones you really need. Once you start earning you can invest in other tools to scale your business and save time, but nothing else is really necessary. If you're an artist and intend to make your own cover designs you can scan your illustrations and upload them to Canva to create your covers. You're right that the 'look inside' feature is no longer available for low content books, unless you use your own ISBN. So A+ content is very important to show your buyer what your book looks like inside or even to give them extra information. I would definitely still put additional information on the back cover. You can't put anything on the inside of the front cover, that's always blank. The first page starts on the right hand side as you open a book. And I do often carry the design to the back cover, it just depends on the design. It's your book, you can design it in any way you feel is right. I wish you the best of luck on your KDP journey Judith!
This video is great. How can I print the cover in the same size? When I print the cover it comes out too large? Also how can I put both pages of the cover front-back together without a separate page? Did you upload the book cover template in word and then dragged it over?
Love the tutorial. I like the Tangent tool as it makes it look effortless. I have watched others on this topic where the process of creating a spine and back appeared complicated, and I hard time following the presenter. Does Tangent have templates for creating book jackets? I assume that you'd just add to the end of the book templates with whatever jacket you'd like.
We can't produce book jackets on Amazon KDP unfortunately, the book cover is produced as one (cover front and back plus spine) and uploaded as one pdf to Amazon kdp. Tangent templates can help you work out the book cover dimensions and then you can create your cover in any design tool of your choice. Personally I like to use Canva, but I started using Powerpoint which is also good.

Hi Nuria. I have a quick question - I believe. In doing things right and tools are part of any process. Would u recommend going to the paid version of Canva. I notice in the free version that there is quite limited usage unless you only plan on using the absolute basics. Thanks again for the effort u go to to produce these tutorials for us. Really much appreciated. Mike
It's a little late now, if it can be approved quickly then yes, but if you are submitting it next week, it will not be approved before Christmas. I have books that I submitted on 22nd of November still in review.
This video was great! But I have a confusion. Could I ask, is it okay if I use free Canva backgrounds to create my low content book cover? And can I use free templates for instance planner interior, for my book interior after altering it according to my liking? Thank you for creating these videos. They are very helpful!
You can but make sure you combine the images, don't use them as they are. By combining I mean modifying them or adding elements, the image should look different to the original. So if you're using a background, make sure to place elements or graphics on the background. Always make everything you create unique.
I'm a new author with a FIVE-BOOK series (for KDP) - just need covers. I have CANVA PRO - Is it really necessary to purchase photos from the outside, or will the templates in the CANVA App be sufficient? Also - what about using the SAME covers with slight alterations., like color shades for the books in the series? I've heard pros and cons on the same basic design for a series. What's your opinion? Respectfully, Steve - GREAT Tutorial - you made it less "scary!"
Hi Steve, it's not strictly necessary to buy photos or images. When I first started I only used free graphics but it does restrict you in terms of choice. I'd be careful with photos, as even the free Canva ones could theoretically be uploaded without permission (there have been cases where this happened). If you work with patterns it is a much easier process and yes you can use different colour shades for books in one series. I would change other elements a little too, so that it's very clear that they are different covers but you can retain the main design elements. Hope this helps.
Hi Nuria. Thank you so much for your tutorials. I am just starting to explore the world of KDP, and I have a question about covers: is it possible to use your own drawings to create your own unique covers on Canva, or any other free designing signs? I have not really found tutorials on this subject.
Hi Monica, yes you can use your own designs! That is the ideal solution because it would make your book really unique. You can either design your covers in a digital format on Affinity or Procreate or you can draw manually and scan your drawings and turn them into digital files. Best of luck on your KDP journey!
@@TheHomeBoss i wanted to use some of my 6 year old daughters art to make covers for children's journals. so I would have to scan the paintings. Taking a picture and uploading would not work then? great video. thank you!
@@pubgiant24 I love that idea! You could take a picture as a last resort but much better to scan it and then use that.
