  • Hey guys! This might be my finest tutorial to date... Today's video also features music by my good friend Yam Beats. He's actually a childhood friend of mine, and he recently got into making beats and posting on TH-cam. It'd mean a lot to just throw him a sub if you can, just so that he can start getting his name out there. I'll definitely be featuring his work more often since he's super talented.

    Hi there Kev. Great tutorial and a really interesting approach to defense. I was the player featured in a couple of the clips under the tag “Unexpected” (the guy in the dominus). I remembered those games from the other night as I did have a hard times against this approach for those couple of games, even telling my players about how I was frustrated that I had lost those games due to you almost seeming out of position pretty much all game, but I couldn’t do anything about it. I thought it was weird that you were putting yourself very far upfield to attack a dribble, but I do see the benefits to it after watching this video. The one thing I do want to point out is that it felt very forced when we were playing. I believe it was so effective because I hadn’t really seen it before. However, during our games, I found that the exploit was just cracking a snap-shot to net (there was a 3-0 score line, Kev scored a ceiling shot, but I brought it back 4-3 in the next clip due to just shooting when Kev placed himself upfield), and was able to get a few goals with relative consistency if I was able to generate the power needed to just take advantage of what you were referring to as “getting height” on the field. I have been a 1s main for as long as I’ve played the game, and I don’t really have great mechanics, but generally try to play BigBrainLeague to get the wins. I am a HUGE believer that there is no be-all-end-all for defensive posturing in this game, and I preach this to anybody I do replay reviews for, and that honestly the player who mixes up their defense best will generally win 1s games. I just wanted to leave my opinion that I think this would be more effective if not done every time, but more in situational times. Essentially, if you see a player who plays more for ground shots and plays shooting the ball rather than trying to cut infield and dribble, I think staying in net would prove to be more successful, following a more traditional out-to-in play style. But if you find a player who likes to cut infield, giving them mixups of in-to-out positioning, early challenges, and goal line saves to counterattacks (after they’ve committed all in) would prove to be better than just playing a straight up in-to-out style of defense, since there is the potential for a player to take a snap-shot and just beat you for positioning so far upfield. Just some thoughts after watching this from someone who also likes to study player habits and exploit them to get wins. I was curious if you had any thoughts about any of the above that I mentioned, and if you do a reply would be greatly appreciated as I’m always down to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies in 1s (it’s like a can of worms for me, some of my friends get annoyed by it I think lol). Anyway, great tutorial, and I’m gonna be sure to mix this into my defensive approaches going forward as I can see how this would completely shut down some players. Looking forward to more videos coming from you soon!

      Hey Unexpected! First of all thanks so much for dropping by and leaving such a great comment. And I definitely have those shots you cracked at my near post etched in my mind, I usually drop a "Nice one!", go back, and study my angles.
      You know what, I think I'll tackle out-to-in defending in a future video. It certainly has it's uses, especially upfield, because you can show the opponent the field... which if they have no boost, they're not very dangerous. If done right (with the right height and ball pressure), it's also quite good at defending flicks. It can be good at defending early crossovers too, if you crossover with them. All things being equal with height, ball pressure, then the size of the goal becomes the next most relevant. Out-to-in can show the whole goal, whilst in-to-out shows a portion of the net.
      This style is probably needlessly principled/overly-defensive, but the reason I made this the first in a tutorial series is we lay the logic down for the most obvious way to protect the net. I also keep in mind that my viewers aren't always GC+ ranks - in fact most are going to be in that gold, plat, diamond range. Then you can understand when to break from those logical guidelines (improvising), which is what I got from your message: "mixing it up" and "no end-all-be-all to defensive posturing".
      I like to play 80%+ of my game with fundamentals, so I don't really have to think super hard on each play, trying to mind-game from bad positions to limit the damage. This is actually a super important point, because with bad fundamentals, you may get less opportunity to improvise. Say a player has bad boost management and can't pick up interior pads, so arrives back with very little. At that point, they pretty much have to go for the back corner boost and settle for an out-to-in, regardless if they can set it up well or not. If you go down the middle, but see an opportunity to break from the rules, grab the big boost, go out-to-in with height, that might be the perfect move. But you always have a solid plan B of blocking the middle.
      For me, it's more freeing in the sense that you have options, it offers room for decision-making and improvisation. It's like always playing with a "Plan B" with opportunities to go "Plan A" at times. Playing "Plan A" all the time has a higher ceiling, but certainly a lower floor, since you have to skip "Plan B" and move straight to "Plan C" when things don't go as planned.
      I also think my perspective is heavily biased because I main 3s, and it's actually even more effective in 2s and 3s, where you can defend 4D (super-BigBrainLeague™)! You just need to buy time for teammates to get back, apply pressure from behind, swipe at the ball etc. So a lot of how I play 1s is to practice for those 2nd/3rd man situations for 3s, where I don't even need to block/save (because the defense is layered), but put off the opponent and recover well, so I'm more accepting of shots at the near post, if it means I don't get mind-gamed, defend air dribbles and flip resets more consistently etc. It's a game of trade-offs and each player has different risk profiles. You can see that I am extremely low-risk on defense, but that's just to make up for high-risk offense like flip resets and dodge control off the wall.
      There's a lot to discuss, so a lot of content for future vids. I think a fun experiment would be to challenge my perceptions by trying to disprove in-to-out, to really see all of the situations where out-to-in is better, you know? I couldn't do that without your insight, so I appreciate you stopping by. Looking forward to playing you again!

      @@Kevpert thanks for the further explanations! That all definitely makes sense for the logic behind it. I definitely liked this new style/positioning, as I’m always looking to expand what I can throw at an opponent to catch them off guard. You are definitely one of my inspirations for the style that I try to play, so I look forward to running into you more and looking forward to future vids. Take it easy!

      Many defensive hockey strategies are to keep the offense to the outside. You basically don't care if you give up shots from far away or from the walls since they are easy for the goalie to defend. The name of the game is not preventing shots as much as it is not giving up high danger chances. Hockey has "heat" maps to show where on the ice the shots are coming from and no one cares if they are coming from sharp angles to the outside

      @@kizvyflakes might be curious about why his out-to in defense is not good. In fact, in shadow defense we prefer out to in, so why is it bad? Out to in can cover the whole net as you go in one direction only. In to out has the possibility of the ball going behind you, the crossover as Kev calls it. I think both work as long as you pinch and close the angle, close enough to react to get to the ball fast. In Kev's Out to in examples, they were simply too far away and didn't close in soon enough.

    I took a peek at Khalid's and AppJack's defensive styles in their 1s games, and by my guesstimate, they defend more from the outside than the inside. And in their game there definitely doesn't to be a constant effort at guiding their opponent near post, if anything it seems they try to guide the opponent far post. Do you think this invalidates this video/strategy in any way? I know you said you've taken a look at Extra and Monkeymoon. But my first thought that comes to my mind is that while defending outside, it both makes an early challenge more of a threat and that saving the ball hopefully keeps your momentum ready for a follow up when you land outside the net. I do completely understand the depth perception/susceptible to fakes/bumps problem though.

      I don't think it invalidates it, it's just an alternative way of playing. I'd argue it's fundamentals derived from the logic the game provides us, so you just have to look for the moments to break from that and improvise.
      Been a while since I've watched Okhalid, but the he's extremely susceptible to air dribble bumps. Bit of an older series, but Eekso absolutely had his way with him in the early matches of this series: th-cam.com/video/WVNnGqbjcE0/w-d-xo.html In the past, I used to watch every single series of his, but it's been a good several months since I've watched his more recent series.
      I've watched some of Jack lately, he's obviously very smart and knows how to hide his weaknesses with good reads, like the play here at: th-cam.com/video/92Ozwlmd7lI/w-d-xo.html, but even still, he gets burned often with out-to-in positioning. Maybe for him though, it comes out to a wash or even a net positive because he gets enough great challenges that lead to goals, and has kickoff goals to quickly erase an opponent's goal.
      I suppose it comes down to playing to your strengths. For me, playing fundamentals most of the time, then improvising say 20% of the time, leads to higher success than playing 100% improvisation + advanced reads. There's less guesswork and I let the positioning do the heavy lifting, so I feel it's less psychologically taxing and frees up my offense a little bit. It's all trade-offs.

      Trust me, you'll learn faster if you try to disprove your hypotheses than if you confirm what you believe.
      A relevant video from Veritasium: th-cam.com/video/vKA4w2O61Xo/w-d-xo.html
      So just give it a go and see what you like/don't like about it. No harm in trying, and you'll come to extremely valuable conclusions (even if that's this style isn't for you... but maybe it'll prevent just air-dribble bumps).

    Kevpert the OG. Almost all videos on defending talk about shadowing out-to-in, but this just shows how viable shadowing in-to-out is. I'll have to try it out.

    Wow, this is was exactly what i was looking for. i swear 80% of the goals i give up are from poor poisoning in the corner. The in-to-out defensive angle will be front of mind while playing 1s from now on. Awesome tutorial!

  • @SpeeDManRL

    In situations where you are attacking the play and the out-to-in defender early challenges you, isn’t it best to take the 50/50 instead of flicking? While flicking can be good to pop over, that takes more time to set up than “loading” your car’s hood to the ball to prepare for that early challenge. What are good alternatives to consider when playing 1s?
    I’m a D2 1s main and am learning that is a major challenge for me.

    • @Kevpert
      @Kevpert  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can always double jump with the ball too - probably even better than flicking, because your car is disrupting their challenge (air bump).

    do you think this method of defending should essentially replace shadow defense now that 1s playstyles incorporate more mechanics like air dribble bumps? I feel like I remember shadow defense being praised as the best technique for defending ground offense/flicks, but is it almost completely unviable at this point in the meta? or do you think it's important to incorporate both depending on the situation?

    • @Kevpert
      @Kevpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In-to-out is still shadow defending, no? You're just defending at an angle, kind of mirroring the opponent's angle.
      What's most important is ball pressure. Imagine if the 100s aren't there, well then you have to go all the way back, not able to put pressure on the ball out-to-in. Since most of the pads are inside and available, you can always bank on getting 2-3 pads, enabling you to get ball pressure if you want. But if you have lots of boost and can get ball pressure out-to-in, I think that's still a good play.
      This is just Episode 1 of a tutorial series, where I lay down the fundamentals first. So more videos of this type will be in the pipeline!
