I love Terry Brands - honestly more because of the loses both in NCAA finals and Olympic Semis. The way he handles losing - anything but gold is failure. The quest to be a champion , not almost. He’s just a tragic hero for me. I guess it’s the fact that he’s so human and vulnerable that makes him such an icon. The American style of wrestling (the gable style) with that warrior mentality. He’s personally inspired me through many hard times in my life. I did meet him once as a teenager - I’m certain he doesn’t remember me , but really had a big effect on me (in a very positive way) throughout my entire life. I’m sure I’m not alone feeling this way
It’s devastating to envision yourself winning over and over and then you have to live with the loss. I think his tough losses made him a better competitor and coach. In his matches against Kendall Cross in the 1996 Olympic trials, it was his relentless pushing that got him into trouble. He learned from that, and you can even see it here that he gave up the 1 point takedown at the end, rather than do something overzealous. I know that my crushing losses made me a much better coach. I’m sure he would he happy to know that he had a tremendous impact on you. He gave his life to this sport, and now he gives his life to other athletes.
Terry Brands was a 2x world champion. That's 2 gold medals at tournaments equally difficult as the Olympic games and hes still devastated that he "only" won a bronze at the Olympics. I cant even comprehend that level of.........duty and obligation and high standards. Hes one of the best USA wrestlers EVER and he looks back on his career as a failure.
@@ods1ODS I checked Terry's wiki right after my comment. Thanks. Seems like video of the match was removed by the Olympic committee due to copyright reasons. Hopefully it'll be uploaded to their TH-cam channel one day.
One thing I love about take downs in freestyle at this level is they have to be picture fucking perfect! No exposure at all all the way through the finish. Not like folk style which I love but the scrambled are way crazier and it’s a whole different beast. You can funk and roll a million times and no points. With most freestyle take downs these great folk style wrestlers have to land such perfect shots so they don’t end up in a danger zone position it’s very impressive to think of the pure speed and technique it takes at this level.

One of my favorite wrestlers ever
Who did Terry lose to that took him out of the 2000 Olympic finals?
@@777Skeptic might've been the Iranian. Debir.

How he held it together for that interview shows how much he matured emotionally and where he was spiritually. Super proud of him
Gable’s reaction is so genuine. Watched Terry grow into the man/wrestler he became and coaching him through his last match of his career.
Beautiful Wrestling
