    A certain magical Index, is about a student, Touma, in a technologically advanced city with Espers (Psychic ability users) and a girl called Index, which introduces him to magic and it can also be seen as a introduction to that series. A certain scientific Railgun, it's about one of the strongest espers (the brown short haired girl) called Misaka Mikoto alias Railgun. These animes play in the same environment, but have different main characters. That's why Touma was rarely seen in the railgun openings. Sometimes they see each other in the anime and sometimes the story intersect with the story of index, but nevertheless they are individual stories. By the way, the reason why there are so many girls in railgun openings is because Misaka goes to a girls-only-school and has only a few male friends.
    Last but not least will be a certain scientific accelerator (hope a reaction to this will come ^^), this anime is about the strongest esper, accelerator (crazy eyes :D) and his story. Not much to say, still the same city, but about him^^
    The whole story of all these animes is quite large and complex. The anime is really worth watching it or even better reading the novel, but it's even longer, it's a realy long interesting story. For a long time the anime adaptions for index and railgun and so on was dropped, but luckily the last few years the series are getting a continuation, that's why the quality got a boost in the last openings of index and railgun, they are quite a few years apart.^^
    Of course, nice reaction 👍 :D

    The relationship of railgun and index can be explained like this: railgun is index’s spin-off but going story wise the plot of index starts around the plot time OP3 for Railgun. Also both series as well as the 3rd spin-off A certain scientific accelerator are considered the best anime franchise that blends magic vs science. Both are more on index while railgun and accelerator focus a bit more on science

    • @craytherlaygaming2852
      @craytherlaygaming2852 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Incorrect. the Index plot starts in the middle of the first season, the anime just ruined the connection. In the Manga when Misaka was trying to get info about lvl upper from that group of people Touma walks in and tries to get them to leave her alone, for their own saftey, this leads into the first scene of Index where Touma's being chased by delinquents anime of Railgun completely botches this and adds some stupid filler about a "Elder sister" with a power that doesn't even make sense in the world of Toaru by esper standards (You can tell by the explanation for her power being ones that you'd hear in MHA) that whole Viscosity thing was bull, and you get to see what such a ability really does in Daihaisie as Viscosity doesn't make something flappy, it makes something easier to pass though.

    I prefer Index over Railgun, story-wise, but when it comes to Anime adaptation, Railgun just feels so much better... especially with the new seasons, Index III and Railgun T, because Index's puts a bunch of light novel volumes into a 26 episode anime, and they definitely needed twice as many because they were adapting the most complex part of the story, trying to rush to the last arc of Old Testament. My favorite opening is definitely the First OP of Index I. When compared it puts together so much and it's very well done (and it's nostalgic).

    • @jordinagel1184
      @jordinagel1184 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve only ever seen the anime adaptations, so it might be different in the LN, but Railgun always beat out Index for me, no contest. The reasons for that are varied: for one, Misaka is just hands-down a better character than either Touma or Index, with Index in particular always grinding my gears. The side characters in Index also feel slightly better (Saten in particular is just awesome), but perhaps that’s because they, as students, feel somewhat more grounded in reality than wizards and saints. As for villains, while both series have some real lackluster antagonists, Railgun did also have some good ones, most notably Accelerator. He’s also the only good antagonistic in Index I’ve seen, and only by virtue of Touma being wrapped up in an arc that technically belongs to Misaka. Esper powers also seem more thought out than magic, though I guess that’s to be expected

    • @MrFreakHeavy
      @MrFreakHeavy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@jordinagel1184 - Misaka is a very good character, I have to admit Touma isn't that good, but he developed a lot in New Testament.
      - "Side characters in Index feel better." Did you mean Railgun? Kuroko, Saten, and Uiharu are cool. Unfortunately, that means the anime does a bad adaptation of some cool characters in Index.
      - Index does have that problem, but we have to remember that most of those characters were made first in Index than in Railgun... although there are some that are Railgun Originals. This is, unfortunately, a problem of the adaptation too, because there are some exclusive to Index that are very good. Aqua of the Back, is freaking good. The Princess is also really good. This leads to Fiama which is Okay-ish. The man himself, Motoharu. But then e get into New Testament which has some of the BEST characters, both friend and foe. Leivinia Bridway, Thor, all of Gremlin, the Kiharas, the [redacted]... and the ultimate fan favorite: Othinus. Misaki is also explored heavily in Index which is why she's a beloved character.
      - Magic has some really cool explanations and uses. And magic is EXTREMELY well thought out, but the anime doesn't explain the detail. To you, Espers makes sense because you already know about science, but Magic requires you to know about lore and mythology, about the different interpretations of all kinds of scripture, stories, myths, and legends, and even lesser-known facts, from different civilizations. Honestly, Magic is a lot cooler than Esper abilities, but the anime doesn't do any justice to it.
      I recommend the LNs, they are really nice. If not good, at least enjoyable.

      @jordinagel1184 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      machinegun yeah, I meant Railgun, my bad. But damn, sounds like the anime adaptation really dropped the ball... I personally dropped the anime after what I think is the Battle Royale arc. Everyone told me that it was one of the best in Index, but it was just bad. No wonder I don’t hold Index (the series) in high regard. I should really try the LN then.
      I’m curious though: does Index herself get any better? Or is she still not much more than a mcguffin who ends up biting Touma’s head every other episode?

      Touma was at least good as Misaka in OT as a protagonist, he gets little attention because he's not moe and a assertive badass (all the time). In NT, he really recieves real focus and that helped.

    Favorite character would definitely have to be Saten (the one in the main quartet with long black hair and a single flower hairpin). To put it simply, she has personality and is also one of the bravest characters in the series considering she has no powers whatsoever, something we see her struggle with early on. She has always been one of my favorites, but there’s one scene in particular in the manga which absolutely sold me on her (so, yeah, spoilers):
    When she was trying to busy Uiharu out of jail and had to leap from the roof of one building to the roof of the jail proper. We know she has no powers, there’s no one there to assist her, and we see her looking at the distance between the buildings, and from the roof to the ground, with definite fear in her eyes. There’s no way she’s making that jump. She would fall, and at the very best break most of her bones. There has to be some other way. Well... none she can think of. But this is too dangerous. She can’t do this. If she jumps, she dies. It’s not possible. It’s-
    And then she jumps.
    That was such a beautiful moment, I can’t even put into words how much that touched me. It is said that true bravery is being afraid, yet still going forward because your conviction is that strong. Well, by that metric, Saten has earned her spot among the bravest characters in the series.

      @@jordinagel1184 Level Upper gave her active applications. Passive ones she has without it consist of having a better sense of smell than a normal human (remember how accurately she located plastic credit cards from a considerable distance in Sisters Arc that way? And there's also even better one in first Railgun SS, where she makes a distinction between magic and esper powers solely by how they smell, without any knowledge that something supernatural besides abilities even exists) and having a sightest bit better reaction time than humanely possible (that is not as impressive, as a lot of different espers show something similar).

Magical Index focuses on the magic angle while Scientific Railgun and Scientific Accelerator focus on the science angle. And there's a lot of crossover characters. The MCs of Railgun and Accelerator were major side characters in Index and the MC of Index shows up as a side character in those two shows.

They have made other anime OP on other anime series but this anime series was the debut for the new singer on OP 1 at the time. Although the only negative portion I have about them is having the same "beat/rhythm" they have created some unique songs that are different from their well known songs.

      Part of it is that their music is accessible to a lot of people, so of course they want to make it somewhat easy to listen to so it is not too much to take in, but to me, the instrumentation and the way it's composed is why I really love the music. Beat and structure is similar, yes, but Japanese music in general is really good at engaging your attention with a lot of different instrumentation and complexity.

    Watching Toaru is like watching Game of Thrones, but each house is a different series. You *can* watch just Index as it's the "main" series, but the further you get into it the more and more it pays off for your time.
    THAT SAID:
    I actually recommend watching Railgun season 1 BEFORE anything else. Not only is it chronologically first, but it is much, much, much easier to understand. The world is so detailed that jumping straight into Index and the magic stuff can seem like static noise. From there, keep in mind Index ("main" series) is a Light Novel adaptation and therefore is way less detailed and very rapid. Railgun and Accelerator are both manga adaptations so they spend a much longer time on single stories.
    (At one point, Index covers a story in 4 episodes that Railgun covers in half a season.)
    The more you watch, the more you want to watch. We're seeing the world from 3(+) separate perspectives, sometimes at the same time, and you can use that to piece together storylines and elements that otherwise would be incidental. It's common for a side/background character to show up in more than one, each time at a different point in their own story. Watching the OPs can be like wack-a-mole seeing how they link together.
    Broadly chronological order (which I think is actually a good watch order):
    Railgun (1-14)
    Railgun (OVA)
    Index (1-6)
    Railgun (15-16)
    Index (7-9)
    Railgun (17-24)
    Index (10-12)
    Railgun S (1-14)
    (optional : Index (13) until "the kicking"))
    Railgun S (15-16)
    Index (14 second half -17)
    Railgun S (17-24)
    Index (18-24)
    Accelerator
    Index II (1-7)
    Endymion
    Index II (8-13)
    Railgun T (1-15)
    Index II (14-16)
    Railgun T (16-??? - current broadcast)
    Index II (17-24)

    Yeah, Mikoto/Biribiri/Electomaster/Shock Princess/Ace of Tokiwadai/The Railgun is the protagonist of this anime. It's centered around the small problems in Academy City as a centre of science, and slowly gets to the dark ugly depths of the city as the seasons proceed. There's a lot of filler and unwanted modifications from the source, but I think you'll still enjoy it. I am happy to say that the latest season (T) gets rid of these!
    Speaking about waifus, I love Misaki and Kongou from Railgun manga; Saten from the anime.
    OP2 is my fav, but OP1 is something very nostalgic to me. After all, I started Toaru with the Railgun seasons back 6 years ago.
    This is one of JC Staff's greatest adaptations of a manga, after Bakuman imo. The pace, animation and characters are really lovable.
    Will be glad to see your reactions! 😁

    This whole series is all about science (modern civilization) vs magic (religion). Thus, Magical Index and Scientific Rail gun. This is also why you saw a high school student with a magical white nun in magical index, and another high school student with scientists and espers.

    Basically, the Toaru franchise has its own cinematic universe essentially. Index, Railgun, and Accelerator are all stories told from the perspectives of different protagonists who's stories have events that are occurring simultaneously and occasionally overlap with one another. Index is the main series and railgun and accelerator are both spin-offs. My recommended watch order would be Index 1, Railgun 1, Railgun S, Accelerator 1, Index 2, Index Movie, Railgun T, and Index 3. That's not the release order, but it's as close to chronological as you can get with a series like this, and I feel it gives the most context and understanding for the characters and parties involved in the story. In summation, I would recommend it, as it is a really unique anime with it's cinematic universe approach and has a good underlying story with lovable characters. However, it is an older series as it's like one of the longest running light novels, so you should expect a fair amount of tropes and cliches particularly in the earlier seasons. Railgun S (the 2nd season) is in my opinion some of the best the series has to offer with great story, animation, and directing. Seasons 1 of Index and Railgun are not as polished. As a result, it can take some effort to get in to this series, but once you're in it doesn't let go. Also, just as an fyi, technically Railgun T is still currently airing since it got delayed a few times due to COVID.

    So yeah. Railgun takes place...during Index. It kinda goes back and forth. Like Railgun S takes place during Index I's ending. It jumps around. I think if Raildex like the MCU of anime. It's not a story always about Railgun, or Index, or Touma. It's more so the story of the city that it takes place in, and all the people that live there.
    And Railgun T's Op looks so much better because it's coming out...right now, where as Railgun and Railgun S came out many years ago.
    Also if your favourite character is not Mikoto Misaka, Tokiwadai's Ace, The third ranked level 5 Electromaster, Railgun. IDK what you're doing.

    So Railgun is a spin off of index, though I enjoyed the anime for it a lot more. Index is pretty heavy and complicated. It is Science and Magic colliding. The Church is magic, and the city is science (with psychic powers). There is a heck fo a lot of lore from the light novels this is originally based off of, smashed into the anime series for Index.
    Railgun’s first season takes place as a prequel to Index, staring one of the most popular side characters of the series, and her all girls school. Railgun focuses on the science side of things only, basically cutting the lore in half, making it make a lot more sense. The story is pretty much psychics vs. psychics, which is much simpler in concept, allowing us to focus on the characters a bit more then the lore. Later the series collides with the Accelerator arc of Index’s story, and becomes a retelling of the same story from a different main character point of view.

    Fittingly the OP's of the Toaru series also fit the setting of the arcs, the Arcs more focused on the Science side, have a more electronic OP to go to them and the Arcs that have a more magic focus have a more choirs feel hence why ROAR the 6th OP of Index was the way it was, It was a Purely Magic side OP the WWIII arc

  • @airknight
    @airknight 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Simple outline of the Toaru series:
    A certain magical index is a light novel series that broadly focuses on the conflict between science/espers vs religion/magic while following the character of Touma.
    A certain scientific railgun is a spin off manga that focuses on the science side, with little to no interaction with magic, and all the factions within the science side while following the character of Misaka Mikoto.
    A certain scientific accelerator (a spin off manga) again focuses on the science side but more on the dark side of Academy city, the main setting of the Toaru story, while follwing the character of Accelerator.
    The main story and spin offs all take place around the same time so the same events will be told from different points of view.
    In regards to the setting of Academy city it is a place where technology is around 15 years ahead of the rest of the world.

    The reason why there are lots of going on in this spin-off series than the main series (Index) is that the first 2 seasons of Index are mainly focused on the world-building of the entire series and its main plot started by the end of season 2 while in Railgun, they don't have to do that. Index has already done the groundwork for them so they won't have the need to re-introduce some stuff and how Academy City (The setting of Railgun) works. In Index, they did not just focus on Academy City but the entire world too. That's the reason why you thought there's a European-looking city in one of the openings of Index and that is because it is taken on either London, Vatican, or France. Season 3 of Index, the reason why there are lots of things happening is that the main story is already progressing.

    Sooo, the original material is Light Novel. A trilogy of them to be exact.
    IF you compare the two first openings of Index and the first two openings of Railgun you WILL see that they "overlap" with each other.
    "Roar" and "Shadow is the Light" are tied for 1st place as far as openings are concerned.
    Index series is the one where the unlucky boy is the main character.
    Railgun series is the side-story where the electromaster girl(a.k.a. biri-biri) is the main character.
    Accelerator is the side-story where the bad dude with the easily recognizable laugh(the same VA who voices Bakugou in My Hero Academia) is the main character.
    So far, ALL of the anime adaptations have adapted the first novel of the three.
    The third novel is currently ongoing btw.

    Academy City's technology is 20 years more advanced than anywhere else in the world. The entire city has no power lines and every couple of blocks they have a wind turbine to power the area. They're able to do this because of the advanced technology they're virtually silent. Wind turbines in real life actually make quite a lot of noise which is why they're usually pretty far from where people live

    The Raildex Franchise is kinda like the MCU. There are multiple series each with a different main character who is a reoccurring secondary character in the other. Although, they do tell different stories they also sometimes overlap. The franchise started as series light novels A Certain Magical Index then came the A Certain Scientific Railgun manga from there there have been dozens different series across all mediums including Japan only video games. There are 3 anime series with a total of 7 seasons combined and a stand alone movie A Certain Magical Index, A Certain Scientific Railgun, A Certain Scientific Accelerator.
    There is a difference between chronology of story and release of the different seasons and the watch order is heavily debated.
    My suggestion:
    Railgun
    Index
    Railgun S
    Index Movie
    (Optional)Accelerator
    Railgun T
    Index II
    Index III
    (Optional)Accelerator
    My reasons for starting you with Railgun are that the first season of Railgun happens first chronologically.
    Also the details of exposition for a lot the different plot elements of Railgun helps to better understand the more vague parts Index as well as well as key points of Index's plot even though it's completely an unrelated story. All of that depends on how much of the details of the exposition you transcribe over to Index and connections are very subtle.
    Finally Index season 1 has story crossover with Railgun S. Although, overall most people say Railgun S' version the same story trumps over Index's, Index does very good job at building an atmosphere and mystery for the stuff that's happening. A mystery works better if you don't already know.
    Accelerator happens around the time of the first entry and may be good break but has little effect on the overall story. To continue progression of the overall story it's probably best to just skip it and keep watching everythinging else first and once story is finished give yourself something extra for dessert.
    Railgun T and Index II overlap again but the second half of Index II goes straight into Index III so figured it's best to do it in a way that groups them together.
    Now you could watch the movie after the series but it's decently placed chronologically where I gave it. Plus the movie signified a new paradigm shift in the production and animation of the franchise as a whole and from that point forward you can clearly see it(minus Index II which was released many years before.) So where it is placed in the watch order does good job at representing that change.
    Accelerator is the creepy white haired guy.
    Railgun S is Second season. Railg T is third, Index uses Roman numerals.
    If you have any questions I'll be glad to answer.
    And if anyone has an opinion of this watch order or different way, feel free to chime in.

  • @bdk336
    @bdk336 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This show is based on a manga which itself is a spin off of the light novel that Index is based on. The manga's events chronologically start prior to and lag behind the light novels. Both have very good source material but the Railgun adaptation is generally higher quality but with filler arcs. Railgun follows one of the major supporting characters from Index. The black haired guy is index's protagonist and the white haired guy is another major character from index.
