The tracks they drive on are called 'ridge' tracks coz they are the VERY top of the mountain range. 4wd 24/7 used to be based on a paper based magazine called 4wd Monthly, and it is one of the best to watch; the guys are very Aussie and take their rigs to some wonderful and difficult spots around the country. This channel should have a contract with a TV network. Their production is second to none. They employ multiple cameramen making hundreds of hours of footage and then all edit it down for TH-cam episodes. They do get sponsored by 4WD accessory brands (and Iron Jack beer) so there's a bit of "comments for cash" but its subtle enough to enjoy it.
Back in the early 1990's I was the Policeman at Woods Point where this video begins, the country shown was my patrol area. The area is beautiful and frightening at the same time and the experience cannot be described in one small article. Whilst the area is magnificent it can be deadly with deep snow in winter wild rivers in summer and I pulled many a vehicle and occupants back from the brink of disaster. Many Australians don't leave the city and don't get to enjoy this type of country. The Police Vehicle used was a Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier (petrol, due to sub-zero temperature conditions) mechanical PTO winch in full Bullbar protection and extended range fuel tanks, communication was handled by 5 radios including HF, UHF and VHF Police radios and UHF CB and VHF CB Civilian Radios.
Gotta love the lads from 4WD Action. They inspired me to do the Old Tele Track a couple of years ago. I went loaded for bear. Front and rear winches, two spare tyres, two sets of maxx tracks and the rooftop tent. Dual zone fridge and enough supplies for three weeks. My Mitsubishi Pajero got there a back, so did my four mates.
We have some amazing tracks in Aus, Its my favourite pass time as well, nothing better than hitting a track setting camp and cracking a tinny, you should do a few more off roads vids.
I've never enjoyed watching someone learn the Aussie way, maybe it's the fact your really interested and curious about things Your not sure of and keen to learn , bravo sir Much love from aus ,as a matter of fact I live a quick car ride from where they are, (it's a lot harder then it looks )
I live in Alexandra, Victoria. The high country is like my backyard. The guy I work for also runs 4WD training courses (SafeTrek). If you come to visit our fair shores, I'm sure you'll find many who would be happy to show you around. If you are any good at filming outdoors (or hook up with someone who is), you could end up with hours of documentary film showing your adventures to present later.
Nah. It's mainly because the DMAX is IFS and you can only go so far lift wise before you need to start getting things like a diff drop, upgraded control arms, upgraded CV joints and axles. 2 inch is usually the sweet spot and 31-32 is the biggest you can really do.
And also to mention laws in Australia are very strict on lifts, tyre size etc. And another reason is that when you go doing bigger lifts, tyres etc it makes the vehicle more prone to breaking stuff. But like I said upgrades are an option but they aren't absolute. Shit will still break easier.

Your correct , not sure what old mates on about , the point of the dmax is to show you are able to do these trips in your "daily drive " not just a rigs But everyone can have there opinion
Yeah factory optioned snorkle on the DMAX most Australian utes have them as an option but the toyota 75/76/79 series have one as standard. Some utes have an offroad model that is optioned up from factory with a snorkle and tougher accessories.

Glad to see some interest in the Aus 4wd scene, we have some amazing country down here. I’m lucky enough to get to experience some of it. I drive a 2000 model Nissan GU Patrol wagon, 4.2L, slow as hell but she goes almost everywhere. She sits on a 2.5/3 inch lift on 33 inch muddies. Got the full setup for camping out for weeks at a time. Sadly they don’t build trucks quite like the used to anymore.
The reason for the high production value is most of not all of these videos were actually filmed and aird on TV good bunch of guys that make great videos
The black Ute or "pickup" is a Nissan Patrol, there is also a wagon version as well that is a lot more common. They are quite legendary over here. Well known for being as tough if not more as the Landcruiser. Both are great 4wds though. The D-Max as well as all the main contenders for the Dual Cab Ute segment here in Australia all have a snorkel as a factory option as it really is needed in places.
Some people have snorkels for water crossings. But quite a few people in Australia also fit snorkels to try and get cleaner air into the engine as the standard air box intake is inside the front fender which is a shockingly dusty location
@@samuelsutton8299 thats correct. I have a patrol myself and installed a snorkel for both river crossings and to reduce the amount of dust that gets sucked in. Though when in a convoy it can be just as bad on the dust front at times.
@@lolthegame123 I have a dmax and don't have a snorkel on it yet. I also live in the middle of whoop whoop SA. My poor air filter gets blown out monthly and replaced every 10-15,000 km
The dual spares on the backs are usually on what we call 'tourers', because its so far between tyre shops in remote areas. Another spare is just a bit of extra insurance or assurance youll hopefully get home. The rig you were drooling over is a chopped Nissan GU Patrol. In Aus, Patrol and Landcruiser have been the go to for a tough 4wd because of the R&D put into them in the early 90s. Though like you said, we have a lot of choice.

The Victorian high country is an awesome place to explore. I have an old 80 series Land Cruiser. Had it for 23 years. Turbo petrol manual. 3” lift, 35” tyres, 4:88 diff gears set up for over landing. Front and rear bars, winch, dual batteries, drawers, fridge, roof rack and all that stuff everyone has. Last trip was to the Simpson Desert. 7500k trip. A constant money pit but they’re memory machines. The Victorian high country and central Australia are my favourites to go explore.
Lived in Bright (where he says they are at the start) for a few years in an old log cabin in the bush with no power. Like camping for a few years. It was a great experience. You'd love it there. It's a spectacularly beautiful place and great for 4WDing. It's just below Mt Hotham in Victoria, one of the few places it snows down here. It's like the 3rd most visited inland tourist destination or someshit like that. Did a lot of motorbiking and 4WDing around there in an old series 1 land rover. They're pretty much the equivalent of the old WW2 jeep the yanks drove (but British built so it's better lol).
The vic high country is the pinnacle of insane 4x4 in straya ! I'm from nsw and even I love the high country in Vic it's amazing and I've done all of new and all of QLD....
My son and I have met these guys a few times and they are great blokes. The high country is spectacular, and has awesome history. I've driven it in my patrol and riden it on my 300..
Stayed in that pub last week. Got down to the Goulburn river and it wasn't by far crossable (if that's even a word) then done Mt Selma and My Skene without chains and don't lock the 80 once.
I live in Tassie and have to go only 10 minutes up the road to find realy good off roading tracks that are seriously fun but technical, 30 to 45 minutes gets me to somewhere that I could just follow gravel roads and tracks for a week or two and possibly not travel the same one twice. Love watching your reaction to what you are seeing. Keep it up. Cheers Hugh.
As an American living in Australia, watching an American watch an Australian show I approve. Done the Simpson and the old tele track. Living in Tasmania and driving an old gq patrol is a dream come true.
That little DMAX is a great ute for offroading. They bought it and built it up to be a more realistic offroader for the average Australian who has a 4x4 ute for work but also wants to go off road without breaking the bank. They take it everywhere and it does great. To answer the snorkel question, Isuzu offers them as a factory option, now they also come standard with a rear difflock in the 4wd models. Great little 4wds...
I am a isuzu dmax mechanic, also a owner of a dmax i can tell you that they are a dealer factory fitment option. But every manufacture here has snorkels, bullbars, side rails, wheels, tyres, towing set ups and all that as a dealer extra if you ask for it we will fit it.
Been years since I last went Bush Bashing (off-roading). I would sit it the tray (back of the Ute) and the last time I went, after hitting a particularly large mound, my backside was flying high above the vehicle (normal) when the truck did a sudden veer off the side, so when I fell back down, it was half out of the Ute. Scared the bageebers outta me….plus my buttcrack getting a very solid smack onto the vehicle’s tray side….ouch! Still laughed like a loon 😜
Regular watcher 4WD24/7, Graham has now upgraded to a chopped Nissan Y62 is a lovely tourer as well as awesome wheeler too. Some of the bigger rigs outwheel him but he does a brilliant job with it, check out his solo touring episodes under the title of Off Grid also you may have watched the episodes where the boys started talking from inside their sheds (garages) these are full is other segments, like tech talk, photos of rigs from viewers, massive fails of vehicles and questions answered, always interesting and sometimes hilarious too.
Ian, I loved your video and reactions on 4WD in Australia. The 4wd 24/7 TH-cam channel that you watched is one of my favourites. Other good ones in Australia that I would recommend are Ronny Dahl 4Wheeling Australia and Tyler Thompson. I’ve watched some of American videos on 4WD and I’ve noticed that not too many of your trucks are fitted with air snorkels and frontal protection bull-bars, whereas in Australia, these are one of the first things we fit to our 4WD. That’s because we have a lot of river crossings and kangaroos are known to jump in front of your vehicle without warning. In another of your videos, you were surprised to hear that there is snow in Australia. The Australian Alps has more snow cover (in area) than the Swiss Alps! The Victorian High Country featured in your video is covered in snow in winter.

They look more the part and there is just so many awesome vehicles to choose from whereas in the USA it’s quite limited. And people just tend to slap a lift and tires on and end it at that. My soulmate and I lived out of a 60 series Landcruiser wagon (early 80s model) for 4 years or more. It was a brilliant vehicle. Up North where I call home, a 3WD is a pretty common family vehicle because you need something a bit tougher than your family sedan.
the Dmax is the channels attempt to show how a fairly regular IFS vehicle can hold its own with the decked-out performance 4x4's and old mate does a wicked job wheelin it! great review!
Mate you should check out one of their videos in my home state of Tasmania, it's so unique compared to the rest of Australia. Super thick and wet temperate rainforest with deep mud holes that almost swallow cars.
always prefer 'mudding' to the type of 4-weeling in this vid. probably helps that we have so much mud down here and my 4x4 being ifs is not as good for 'rock climbing' as a solid front.
Like the camera car, mine is a 1994 Landcruiser 80 series GXL 8 seat wagon, 1HD-T (Factory Turbo Diesel, 4.2 litre (256ci) inline 6), 5spd, 4" suspension lift, 35" muddies (mud terrain tyres) part-time 4wd kit, Factory front & rear diff locks, long range fuel tanks, winch bar & tow bar. I rebuilt the gearbox & transfer case at the end of last year & I am going to rebuild the engine this year with a 4.5 litre stroker kit with bigger G turbo injectors & pump. My favourite off road trip is on almost every Aussie's bucket list, The Old Telegraph Track in Queensland which goes to the northern most point of Australia, the tip of Cape York Penindula. You can check that out on 4WD 24/7s TH-cam channel. 2nd favourite is a combination of the Glass House Mountains & Fraser Island. Also can be seen on 4WD 24/7.
The Vic High Country is gorgeous and yes, thick bushland dotted with small towns where you will find fabulous Aussies. The town Walhalla was mentioned, they only got electricity to the town in 1998, even though it was a mining town with a long history. The Toyota Landcruiser is very popular here, even among non off roaders, especially in Melbourne's richest suburbs, where they are called Toorak Tractors. Toorak being a VERY wealthy area.
Isuzu D-Max is my dream vehicle, mainly for its towing capacity having a truck engine in a car. I own horses so need something that can easily tow 1000+kg's of horses plus another 1000kg float. Seeing the D-Max tackle the off road tracks is even more incentive to keep saving for it 🙌
@IWrocker, I live approx. 100-160km from this area and while not off-roading i have driven extensively through this area on paved roads and camped out and it is very beautiful country even without an off-road vehicle. yep that is a good area.. I have 4wd in the vic high country many many times. My snorkel wasnt factory, but was aftermarket put on before I took delivery from the dealer. Factory locker is awesome though. Yep there are a lot of different makes in Aus. Glad you are enjoying it mate.
The dual cab Ute towing the trailer and the black single cab auto one were both Nissan patrols. Very popular over here with the TD42 engine which is a mechanical fuel pump inline 6 diesel, they are nicknamed the kettle for getting hot but well looked after ones stay cool. A lot of Aussie are starting to do engine swaps and import 6BTs and Duramax for their patrols which make them unstoppable off road.
I worked with a bloke whos brother built a 1985 toyota 4runner. Fibreglass lid removed for a custom canvas top, lifted, 4L 1uz toyota v8 with a single turbo. Only running 8 or so psi so not massive power, but more then adequate. On 37's, it could go places most people cannot. It was caged for the event of ending up on its lid etc. A lot of cash thrown into it for a weekend warrior. It was a pretty sorted and good looking rig.
You may also enjoy watching Ronny Dahl 4 Wheeling Australia. He has a big following in the states. Not quite as hardcore wheeling as these guys but really good adventures with great scenery. We are so lucky in Oz to have so many amazing and remote destinations to visit.
Nothing quite like the Victorian High Country. 35+ years back Me and one or two mates would head up there (Me in my HJ47, David in his 2.2 Hilux) and have a ball. We had nothing but a hand winch (great incentive for not getting stuck) and diff lockers we had only seen in magazines. That was an adventure, no phones back then only the CB and cut off from the rest of the world and no wiz bang fancy stuff like these blokes. We also did it on standard 7.50 x 16 tyres and wheels. These blokes had it easy.
I grew up in the Vic high country where The Man from snowy river was filmed, love the mountains. My fourbie is a 2003 Toyota Hilux 3.0 TD and still runs like new can't go wrong .
Bush tuckerman was an awesome show and available on youtube. He was an SAS recruite that eventually got employed to discover foods and survival techniques in the bush, more the top end but very interesting.

I have the isuzu mux which is a 6 seater wagon not the duel cab ute, still a 4x4, bought in 2014 and added a few extras. Never had any mechanical issues ever. Love my gold fossicking and fly fishing. Cheers.

The VHC is the offroad touring and camping mecca. Stunning scenery, crystal clear streams fantastic tracks, it has it all. Its also had some of the most ferocious bushfires in Australia's history. Toyota are king off the road.
We may have more 4wd options but the way your 4wds can be set up is way different to us, the lifts and tires you guys can have we get yellow sticked for. meaning the lift and tires need to be removed and a legal size lift needs to be fitted so it can go over the pits and get the yellow sticker removed

The vehicles were Izuzu dmax, Toyota 80 series and Nissan GU patrol. I can vouch for the Patrols, got 1999 GU patrol on 35's with a 6" hyperflex suspension lift and reduction gears. ❤
EXPLANATIONS : The Isuzu D-Max is a good little light duty off roader. Along with all the smaller Toyota's, Hilux, 4Runner etc The problem with even bigger tyres on the D-Max is you need a lift kit and the rear axle is weak. Factory snorkel option kits are common in Australia. The Nissan Patrol and Toyota Landcruiser are the pinnacle of Aussie off road vehicles. Jeep is not popular here due to their reliability problems in hot weather (over 110deg) and total lack of spare parts outside major cities. Remember all of these vehicles cost 50% more in Australia than the US due to import taxes. The Black rig with the "Orto" plates is a Fifth Gen Y61 Nissan Patrol (Safari). The fish cakes are basically just Tuna rissoles...
I have a standard Holden Rodeo, 2003 4x4. I mainly use it for beach and hunting. Being petrol it's tough on fuel so I don't hit the high country or go too far past the black stump
Yep, the snorkel is a factory option. Most Australian sold 4WDs have a snorkel option. My old 60 series...it died a less than graceful death due to rust issues those models had. We lived on a beach for quite some time. Anyway, my 60 series Landcruiser wagon had the old 2H diesel and a snorkel. I put extensions on the axle breathers so that they were above wheel height It was a great old rig while it lasted. I bought it in around 2007(?) and put it to rest in a paddock up North in 2012. It has some stories to tell.

Over landing lol, we just call it camping. BTW Shauno's Dirty 30 his referring to is a 60 series land cruiser wagon chopped down into a ute and the video previous to this Shauno rolled her onto her lid.
Theres loads of videos on 4x4ing around Australia and the work put into their rigs. All forms like cummins 5.9Ls in patrols to supercharged 6.2L chev ls powered off roaders. Custom bodies similar to the 4 door patrol ute towing the camper in that vid and a range of different custom custom fabrications to various 4x4s. The diehard guys get fully financial into their rigs.
Many 4x4's in Australia come standard with snorkels. Some even have "4x4 packages" and special edition models with upgraded suspension, bigger tyres, winch, front steel bars that would normally be considered "aftermarket". Straight from the dealership
Moved recently over those hills a bit to the east from north to south. So used the best off road vehicle there is, a hired one. Amazing how well a box van does, scariest thing was the logging trucks.
also yea that snorkel is factory. over here you can have heaps of options added from factory. snorkels, winch compatible bull bars, roof racks and cages, light bars. you name it they more then likely sell it. its the same for all our 4x4 manufacturers like toyota, ford, mazda, isuzu even less known ones like LDV and GWM
in australia the legal limit for your car is 33s and 2 inch lift you can go bigger and higher with a permit like 4inch 35s but if no mod plate you get defected
I have to add, if you want a really "in-depth" video on Australian 4wd "utes" like the Toyota Hilux, Ford ranger, Isuzu D-max, Nissan Navara, VW Amerok, Mitsubishi Triton and so on search the 4wd247 YT channel for their "duel cab ute comparison" I think it's called and it goes through in-depth comparison of each vehicles capabilities on different terrain like sand, dirt roads, flex, towing and heaps more. It's not a long video, I think maybe 30mins or so, but you'll get a really great look at the selection of 4wd utes we have (sadly it only has utes and not full size wagons that we have, but I bet you'll enjoy learning the pros and cons of each vehicle from engines, to transmission, breaks, tow capacity, suspension and everything)
Victorian high country has been my home since forever even when I've been living off the hill & closer to Grampians I still have to even if only to Kinglake, Murrindindi for a night, have a few casts & smell that smell of fertile soil & tree ferns. I've got a vn station wagon so many places most wouldn't believe but predominantly old Hilux's, Patrol's, LandCruiser's a Pathfinder or two & a ML320 that I could never get to the places I have with the vn
I live on a remote beach on the Great Barrier Reef and have a hundred kilometers of isolated beach (before its cut by river mouths) 70 meters outside my back door and I am on it almost every day. Left home at nine and spent most of my life working in the most remote regions of Australia. Been a Four wheel drive enthusiast for 35 years done various stock routes and done the big lap (around Australia) twice. Have no real comments about this video but just wanted you to know I could stand more 4x4 content. Cheers.
watching these guys will quickly show you how much more intense Aussie tracks and 4wd'ing is compared to what you know from the U.S... but thats why we have the cars that you don't.. good to see you learning about the culture of it
This is making me wish I had footage of some of the trails I went on when I was working for Forestry SA, it was a regular thing that I'd be going up 55 degree or more inclines and 3 foot deep paddocks made of nothing but mud. It was like pinball going through the mud, you'd just hope you hit hard ground before a fence. I was driving my beloved 85 MK Nissan Patrol Ute.

You might enjoy videos from Malcolm Douglas, about 40+ years old, but he used to go into the real outback and spent much time among the natives.

Beautiful part of Victoria. I've been up there 4 wheel driving and camping with mates for 30 years. Still a lot to see.
Sirena Tuna is the only one i love. So expensive in comparison but its always perfect light colour and has not fishy yucky taste. Such good quality.

I live in Alexandra, Victoria. The high country is like my backyard. The guy I work for also runs 4WD training courses (SafeTrek). If you come to visit our fair shores, I'm sure you'll find many who would be happy to show you around. If you are any good at filming outdoors (or hook up with someone who is), you could end up with hours of documentary film showing your adventures to present later.
The DMax on this show runs 31's on purpose, its to show that the average joe with a lightly modified 4wd can still get out there and do it
Nah. It's mainly because the DMAX is IFS and you can only go so far lift wise before you need to start getting things like a diff drop, upgraded control arms, upgraded CV joints and axles. 2 inch is usually the sweet spot and 31-32 is the biggest you can really do.
And also to mention laws in Australia are very strict on lifts, tyre size etc. And another reason is that when you go doing bigger lifts, tyres etc it makes the vehicle more prone to breaking stuff. But like I said upgrades are an option but they aren't absolute. Shit will still break easier.

Yeah factory optioned snorkle on the DMAX most Australian utes have them as an option but the toyota 75/76/79 series have one as standard. Some utes have an offroad model that is optioned up from factory with a snorkle and tougher accessories.

Glad to see some interest in the Aus 4wd scene, we have some amazing country down here. I’m lucky enough to get to experience some of it. I drive a 2000 model Nissan GU Patrol wagon, 4.2L, slow as hell but she goes almost everywhere. She sits on a 2.5/3 inch lift on 33 inch muddies. Got the full setup for camping out for weeks at a time. Sadly they don’t build trucks quite like the used to anymore.
The reason for the high production value is most of not all of these videos were actually filmed and aird on TV good bunch of guys that make great videos
The black Ute or "pickup" is a Nissan Patrol, there is also a wagon version as well that is a lot more common. They are quite legendary over here. Well known for being as tough if not more as the Landcruiser. Both are great 4wds though.
The D-Max as well as all the main contenders for the Dual Cab Ute segment here in Australia all have a snorkel as a factory option as it really is needed in places.
Some people have snorkels for water crossings. But quite a few people in Australia also fit snorkels to try and get cleaner air into the engine as the standard air box intake is inside the front fender which is a shockingly dusty location
@@samuelsutton8299 thats correct. I have a patrol myself and installed a snorkel for both river crossings and to reduce the amount of dust that gets sucked in. Though when in a convoy it can be just as bad on the dust front at times.
@@lolthegame123 I have a dmax and don't have a snorkel on it yet. I also live in the middle of whoop whoop SA. My poor air filter gets blown out monthly and replaced every 10-15,000 km
The dual spares on the backs are usually on what we call 'tourers', because its so far between tyre shops in remote areas. Another spare is just a bit of extra insurance or assurance youll hopefully get home.
The rig you were drooling over is a chopped Nissan GU Patrol.
In Aus, Patrol and Landcruiser have been the go to for a tough 4wd because of the R&D put into them in the early 90s. Though like you said, we have a lot of choice.

I have an old 80 series Land Cruiser.
Had it for 23 years.
Turbo petrol manual.
3” lift, 35” tyres, 4:88 diff gears set up for over landing.
Front and rear bars, winch, dual batteries, drawers, fridge, roof rack and all that stuff everyone has.
Last trip was to the Simpson Desert. 7500k trip. A constant money pit but they’re memory machines.
The Victorian high country and central Australia are my favourites to go explore.
Lived in Bright (where he says they are at the start) for a few years in an old log cabin in the bush with no power. Like camping for a few years. It was a great experience. You'd love it there. It's a
spectacularly beautiful place and great for 4WDing. It's just below Mt Hotham in Victoria, one of the few places it snows down here. It's like the 3rd most visited inland tourist destination or someshit like that. Did a lot of motorbiking and 4WDing around there in an old series 1 land rover. They're pretty much the equivalent of the old WW2 jeep the yanks drove (but British built so it's better lol).
The vic high country is the pinnacle of insane 4x4 in straya ! I'm from nsw and even I love the high country in Vic it's amazing and I've done all of new and all of QLD....
My son and I have met these guys a few times and they are great blokes. The high country is spectacular, and has awesome history. I've driven it in my patrol and riden it on my 300..
Stayed in that pub last week. Got down to the Goulburn river and it wasn't by far crossable (if that's even a word) then done Mt Selma and My Skene without chains and don't lock the 80 once.
If you watch anything 4WD on TH-cam, this is the channel to watch Big thumbs up : )
I live in Tassie and have to go only 10 minutes up the road to find realy good off roading tracks that are seriously fun but technical, 30 to 45 minutes gets me to somewhere that I could just follow gravel roads and tracks for a week or two and possibly not travel the same one twice. As an American living in Australia, watching an American watch an Australian show I approve. Done the Simpson and the old tele track. Living in Tasmania and driving an old gq patrol is a dream come true.
That little DMAX is a great ute for offroading. They bought it and built it up to be a more realistic offroader for the average Australian who has a 4x4 ute for work but also wants to go off road without breaking the bank. They take it everywhere and it does great. To answer the snorkel question, Isuzu offers them as a factory option, now they also come standard with a rear difflock in the 4wd models. Great little 4wds...
I am a isuzu dmax mechanic, also a owner of a dmax i can tell you that they are a dealer factory fitment option. But every manufacture here has snorkels, bullbars, side rails, wheels, tyres, towing set ups and all that as a dealer extra if you ask for it we will fit it.
Been years since I last went Bush Bashing (off-roading). I would sit it the tray (back of the Ute) and the last time I went, after hitting a particularly large mound, my backside was flying high above the vehicle (normal) when the truck did a sudden veer off the side, so when I fell back down, it was half out of the Ute. Scared the bageebers outta me….plus my buttcrack getting a very solid smack onto the vehicle’s tray side….ouch! Still laughed like a loon 😜

Regular watcher 4WD24/7, Graham has now upgraded to a chopped Nissan Y62 is a lovely tourer as well as awesome wheeler too. Some of the bigger rigs outwheel him but he does a brilliant job with it, check out his solo touring episodes under the title of Off Grid also you may have watched the episodes where the boys started talking from inside their sheds (garages) these are full is other segments, like tech talk, photos of rigs from viewers, massive fails of vehicles and questions answered, always interesting and sometimes hilarious too.

Other good ones in Australia that I would recommend are Ronny Dahl 4Wheeling Australia and Tyler Thompson.
I’ve watched some of American videos on 4WD and I’ve noticed that not too many of your trucks are fitted with air snorkels and frontal protection bull-bars, whereas in Australia, these are one of the first things we fit to our 4WD. That’s because we have a lot of river crossings and kangaroos are known to jump in front of your vehicle without warning.
In another of your videos, you were surprised to hear that there is snow in Australia. The Australian Alps has more snow cover (in area) than the Swiss Alps! The Victorian High Country featured in your video is covered in snow in winter.

They look more the part and there is just so many awesome vehicles to choose from whereas in the USA it’s quite limited. And people just tend to slap a lift and tires on and end it at that. I used to live in the Highlands in Victoria 35 years ago. Every year we would get snow ❄️ . It was awesome as kids to play in it..
My soulmate and I lived out of a 60 series Landcruiser wagon (early 80s model) for 4 years or more. It was a brilliant vehicle. Up North where I call home, a 3WD is a pretty common family vehicle because you need something a bit tougher than your family sedan.
the Dmax is the channels attempt to show how a fairly regular IFS vehicle can hold its own with the decked-out performance 4x4's and old mate does a wicked job wheelin it!

Mate you should check out one of their videos in my home state of Tasmania, it's so unique compared to the rest of Australia. Super thick and wet temperate rainforest with deep mud holes that almost swallow cars.
always prefer 'mudding' to the type of 4-weeling in this vid. probably helps that we have so much mud down here and my 4x4 being ifs is not as good for 'rock climbing' as a solid front.

Like the camera car, mine is a 1994 Landcruiser 80 series GXL 8 seat wagon, 1HD-T (Factory Turbo Diesel, 4.2 litre (256ci) inline 6), 5spd, 4" suspension lift, 35" muddies (mud terrain tyres) part-time 4wd kit, Factory front & rear diff locks, long range fuel tanks, winch bar & tow bar. I rebuilt the gearbox & transfer case at the end of last year & I am going to rebuild the engine this year with a 4.5 litre stroker kit with bigger G turbo injectors & pump.
My favourite off road trip is on almost every Aussie's bucket list, The Old Telegraph Track in Queensland which goes to the northern most point of Australia, the tip of Cape York Penindula. You can check that out on 4WD 24/7s TH-cam channel.
2nd favourite is a combination of the Glass House Mountains & Fraser Island. Also can be seen on 4WD 24/7.
The Vic High Country is gorgeous and yes, thick bushland dotted with small towns where you will find fabulous Aussies. The town Walhalla was mentioned, they only got electricity to the town in 1998, even though it was a mining town with a long history.
The Toyota Landcruiser is very popular here, even among non off roaders, especially in Melbourne's richest suburbs, where they are called Toorak Tractors. Toorak being a VERY wealthy area.
Isuzu D-Max is my dream vehicle, mainly for its towing capacity having a truck engine in a car. I own horses so need something that can easily tow 1000+kg's of horses plus another 1000kg float.
Seeing the D-Max tackle the off road tracks is even more incentive to keep saving for it 🙌
@IWrocker, I live approx. 100-160km from this area and while not off-roading i have driven extensively through this area on paved roads and camped out and it is very beautiful country even without an off-road vehicle.
Would be great to see youy come here and go on a trip through the Victorian high country depicted here, and I look forward to see you make a video about the trip.

yep that is a good area.. I have 4wd in the vic high country many many times. My snorkel wasnt factory, but was aftermarket put on before I took delivery from the dealer. Factory locker is awesome though. Yep there are a lot of different makes in Aus. Glad you are enjoying it mate.
The dual cab Ute towing the trailer and the black single cab auto one were both Nissan patrols. Very popular over here with the TD42 engine which is a mechanical fuel pump inline 6 diesel, they are nicknamed the kettle for getting hot but well looked after ones stay cool. A lot of Aussie are starting to do engine swaps and import 6BTs and Duramax for their patrols which make them unstoppable off road.
VHC is the best.

I worked with a bloke whos brother built a 1985 toyota 4runner. Fibreglass lid removed for a custom canvas top, lifted, 4L 1uz toyota v8 with a single turbo. Only running 8 or so psi so not massive power, but more then adequate. On 37's, it could go places most people cannot. It was caged for the event of ending up on its lid etc. A lot of cash thrown into it for a weekend warrior. It was a pretty sorted and good looking rig.
You may also enjoy watching Ronny Dahl 4 Wheeling Australia. He has a big following in the states. Not quite as hardcore wheeling as these guys but really good adventures with great scenery. We are so lucky in Oz to have so many amazing and remote destinations to visit.
Nothing quite like the Victorian High Country. 35+ years back Me and one or two mates would head up there (Me in my HJ47, David in his 2.2 Hilux) and have a ball. We had nothing but a hand winch (great incentive for not getting stuck) and diff lockers we had only seen in magazines.
That was an adventure, no phones back then only the CB and cut off from the rest of the world and no wiz bang fancy stuff like these blokes. We also did it on standard 7.50 x 16 tyres and wheels. These blokes had it easy.
I grew up in the Vic high country where The Man from snowy river was filmed, love the mountains. My fourbie is a 2003 Toyota Hilux 3.0 TD and still runs like new can't go wrong .
Bush tuckerman was an awesome show and available on youtube. He was an SAS recruite that eventually got employed to discover foods and survival techniques in the bush, more the top end but very interesting.
Those blokes are absolute legends. Sus out some Cape York trips. Gunshot track, tele track, etc.

I have the isuzu mux which is a 6 seater wagon not the duel cab ute, still a 4x4, bought in 2014 and added a few extras. Never had any mechanical issues ever. Love my gold fossicking and fly fishing. Cheers.

The VHC is the offroad touring and camping mecca. Stunning scenery, crystal clear streams fantastic tracks, it has it all. Its also had some of the most ferocious bushfires in Australia's history.
Toyota are king off the road.
And then a Nissan comes along to tow you out.
We may have more 4wd options but the way your 4wds can be set up is way different to us, the lifts and tires you guys can have we get yellow sticked for. meaning the lift and tires need to be removed and a legal size lift needs to be fitted so it can go over the pits and get the yellow sticker removed

The vehicles were Izuzu dmax, Toyota 80 series and Nissan GU patrol.
I can vouch for the Patrols, got 1999 GU patrol on 35's with a 6" hyperflex suspension lift and reduction gears. ❤
EXPLANATIONS :
The Isuzu D-Max is a good little light duty off roader. Along with all the smaller Toyota's, Hilux, 4Runner etc
The problem with even bigger tyres on the D-Max is you need a lift kit and the rear axle is weak.
Factory snorkel option kits are common in Australia.
The Nissan Patrol and Toyota Landcruiser are the pinnacle of Aussie off road vehicles.
Jeep is not popular here due to their reliability problems in hot weather (over 110deg) and total lack of spare parts outside major cities.
Remember all of these vehicles cost 50% more in Australia than the US due to import taxes.
The Black rig with the "Orto" plates is a Fifth Gen Y61 Nissan Patrol (Safari).
The fish cakes are basically just Tuna rissoles...
The Toyota Landcruiser is really common in Australia and is used for 4WDing alot.
Known as a tough vehicle that can pretty much withstand anything.
I have a standard Holden Rodeo, 2003 4x4. I mainly use it for beach and hunting. Being petrol it's tough on fuel so I don't hit the high country or go too far past the black stump
Yep, the snorkel is a factory option. Most Australian sold 4WDs have a snorkel option. My old 60 series...it died a less than graceful death due to rust issues those models had. We lived on a beach for quite some time. Anyway, my 60 series Landcruiser wagon had the old 2H diesel and a snorkel. I put extensions on the axle breathers so that they were above wheel height It was a great old rig while it lasted. I bought it in around 2007(?) and put it to rest in a paddock up North in 2012. It has some stories to tell.

Over landing lol, we just call it camping. BTW Shauno's Dirty 30 his referring to is a 60 series land cruiser wagon chopped down into a ute and the video previous to this Shauno rolled her onto her lid.
That 'Old Coach Road' was third gear fun on my old XR600 Honda. Some great tracks around here, 4wd and Motorbike.
Theres loads of videos on 4x4ing around Australia and the work put into their rigs. All forms like cummins 5.9Ls in patrols to supercharged 6.2L chev ls powered off roaders. Custom bodies similar to the 4 door patrol ute towing the camper in that vid and a range of different custom custom fabrications to various 4x4s. The diehard guys get fully financial into their rigs.
There are even guys with HEAVILY modded UniMogs!!

Many 4x4's in Australia come standard with snorkels. Some even have "4x4 packages" and special edition models with upgraded suspension, bigger tyres, winch, front steel bars that would normally be considered "aftermarket". Straight from the dealership

Moved recently over those hills a bit to the east from north to south. So used the best off road vehicle there is, a hired one. Amazing how well a box van does, scariest thing was the logging trucks.
also yea that snorkel is factory. over here you can have heaps of options added from factory. snorkels, winch compatible bull bars, roof racks and cages, light bars. you name it they more then likely sell it. its the same for all our 4x4 manufacturers like toyota, ford, mazda, isuzu even less known ones like LDV and GWM
in australia the legal limit for your car is 33s and 2 inch lift you can go bigger and higher with a permit like 4inch 35s but if no mod plate you get defected
I have to add, if you want a really "in-depth" video on Australian 4wd "utes" like the Toyota Hilux, Ford ranger, Isuzu D-max, Nissan Navara, VW Amerok, Mitsubishi Triton and so on search the 4wd247 YT channel for their "duel cab ute comparison" I think it's called and it goes through in-depth comparison of each vehicles capabilities on different terrain like sand, dirt roads, flex, towing and heaps more. It's not a long video, I think maybe 30mins or so, but you'll get a really great look at the selection of 4wd utes we have (sadly it only has utes and not full size wagons that we have, but I bet you'll enjoy learning the pros and cons of each vehicle from engines, to transmission, breaks, tow capacity, suspension and everything)
We did a high country trip in our 3ltr Nissan Patrol one xmas and had snow near Mt Buller on New Years day it was the time my wife had seen snow
Victorian high country has been my home since forever even when I've been living off the hill & closer to Grampians I still have to even if only to Kinglake, Murrindindi for a night, have a few casts & smell that smell of fertile soil & tree ferns. I've got a vn station wagon so many places most wouldn't believe but predominantly old Hilux's, Patrol's, LandCruiser's a Pathfinder or two & a ML320 that I could never get to the places I have with the vn
The Veichle that you liked is a GU Patrol Shot wheel base my dad owns a 1994 GQ Patrol and has 42inch tyres with no lift

I live on a remote beach on the Great Barrier Reef and have a hundred kilometers of isolated beach (before its cut by river mouths) 70 meters outside my back door and I am on it almost every day. Left home at nine and spent most of my life working in the most remote regions of Australia.
Been a Four wheel drive enthusiast for 35 years done various stock routes and done the big lap (around Australia) twice.

watching these guys will quickly show you how much more intense Aussie tracks and 4wd'ing is compared to what you know from the U.S... but thats why we have the cars that you don't.. good to see you learning about the culture of it

This is making me wish I had footage of some of the trails I went on when I was working for Forestry SA, it was a regular thing that I'd be going up 55 degree or more inclines and 3 foot deep paddocks made of nothing but mud. It was like pinball going through the mud, you'd just hope you hit hard ground before a fence. I was driving my beloved 85 MK Nissan Patrol Ute.
Fish cakes are so easy to make as you see...almost a fish-burger. A good Aussie meal with a few beers.
