  • Tiger Woods’ third-round 65 earned him a share of the lead in what became a rain-shortened 54-holes event. Woods squared off against Tom Lehman in a playoff where Woods won on the very first hole.
Tiger Woods' chase for Sam Snead's record of 82 PGA TOUR wins began at the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational, his first TOUR win in just his fifth professional start. Over 20 years later Woods' excellence has seen him raise a trophy in six countries and 16 different American states.

Here's is the real story. The winning check that day was $216,000. In 2021 first place at the Genesis Invitational was $1,674,000. First place at the 2021 BMW Championship was $1,270,931. First place at the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational was $1,674,000. And these are not major tournaments. These are not cost of living increases this is the Tiger effect. Who would ever think we would see $3,000,000 appearance fees.

Curtis Strange was a hater. In Tiger's first PGA tour event, he openly scored him when he said he wanted a victory. "You'll learn" Curtis scoffed. Here, you can see how much it hurts him to admit that Tiger has done extremely well, and he still wanted to claim Lehman was the best player in the US. There was a lot jealousy and resistance to Tiger in the beginning, but I think what he did at Augusta in 97 was the nail in his critics coffins.

Well, that's weird. At 16:24, Lehman hits a shot from the 15th fairway, and a guy in the gallery says, "Go Baby Go." A few seconds later, Tiger hits from the 16th fairway, and the same guy says the same thing.

The way Tiger stuck that tee shot on 17 showed respect to Lehman. Tiger kept playing his normal game instead of just sidling to a careful par on the good fortune of Lehman's terrible tee shot.

He was aiming 25 right of the pin and he pulled it lol. The real accomplishment Tiger showed was his focus to just aim at the middle of the green in case he pulled it.

IIRC In his book, he described this as the "perfectly acceptable miss" as he had been pulling it throughout the day, so he lined up for the right, and his pull knocked it stiff.

The thing I love is young Tiger you can see the raw power and talent. After his injuries and years of struggling he learned to rely on his talent. Instead of just crushing it to a green he draws or cuts it almost every shot to pull them close to pin locations or around dog legs/bunker placement. He hits woods more and go into par 5s with irons instead of wedges. He really flipped his game. Very impressive to see
