This short film from the Department of Defense begins with an instrumental version of the USA National Anthem, probably used as a TV sign-off in the 1950s. It contains images of the Stars and Stripes, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Plymouth Rock, the Washington Monument, Capitol building, and images of U.S. Army troops and weapons in formation. At (1:27), "The Civil War" presents a brief history of the war between the states, using battle footage from a Hollywood production. At (2:11) the film shows the Confederate Army and comments about the spirit of the "rebel". At (3:19) the Union Army is shown in combat. At (3:49) the "grim and heroic figures in blue and gray" are celebrated as the names of battles are shown, including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. The film ends with the War Department seal and spoken lines celebrating the Army of the Republic and ends with the line "the Union forever."
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFi...

There's more history in this 5 minutes than most kids get in 4 years of high school 😮

Well. That is what years of direct attacks on the public school system has done. There is a narrative that it is "because of the teachers" or "because of the progressives" but the reality is that public schools have been under direct assault for decades by conservative/religious special interest groups who see private schools, charter schools, and home schooling as a better alternative (mostly because it keeps the poor and other races from getting a proper education while their preferred programs get all the government education funding.

Someone put in the closing screen backwards on purpose?

This reel of film, for whatever reason, was "flopped" so the only way to fix it was to flop the closing screen in scanning.

0:08 WABC or WRCA (later renamed to WNBC) played this national anthem after they signed off for the day, after the anthem, there would be a test pattern tone display on people TV

I can appreciate how they played up both sides, they were all Americans after all. They ultimately blamed the failed government, not the people.

I don't think this was in the 1950's this has the 50 star flag, so its from either 1960 or 1961
