- In 2017, to coincide with the NGV’s House of Dior: Seventy years of Haute Couture, two new couture works were commissioned for the fashion and textiles collection with funds donated by the David Richards Bequest and the F&T Supporters Group.
Essence d’Herbier was commissioned by the NGV after Katie Somerville, Senior Curator Fashion and Textiles attended Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first Dior Couture show in Paris in January 2017. In July 2016, Chiuri became the seventh designer and first female artistic Director at Christian Dior and her couture debut coincided with the 70th anniversary of the house.
As part of the acquisition process, documentary photography and film footage was taken in order to reveal some of the specialist techniques, tools and production methods specific to the making of couture garments and to give a behind-the-scenes-glimpse into the Dior ateliers.

Wish this was about 2 hours longer. I love seeing the art of couture. Meticulous care and precision. The techniques. The dream-like designs. Perfection.
You should watch Dior and I on Netflix (if its still there...)! Its a beautiful show and shows a lot of the sewing as well as ideas behind it all.
Ikr!! All couture dress making videos last for 2-3 mins. Wish they were atleast half hour long. I could watct it all day tho🤣

I have always loved doing the hand sewing- it is sad that the "artists" aren't acknowledged!
I think I wouldn’t care to be acknowledged just working with all those beautiful things all day under a my light would be enough for me!
They know how to sew and have learned how to make sewing patterns, at least those with a degree. So there is no excuse for some of their atrocious, unfitting pieces, with sad solutions, trying to combine different materials.
I agree with you, but some artisans are just so passionate with their craft and for them that's all what really matters to most of them - just doing what they truly love, not caring about the recognition. ❤
My grandfather was a tailor . Made some clothes for my barbie doll . Wish I'd picked his brain alittle . I was young when he passed . What a beautiful art .

More like neurosurgeons, because these are extremely delicate and detailed and precise.
Clothes are for warmth, modesty and to look good. These people are over doing it.

Really ??? I don't ! 80 000 euros for a Couture Dress , sorry but i don't see one single way to justify the price tag.
Especially since , if it wasn't made by Dior , but still handmade using the same material and technique, it wouldn't cost anything over 6000 euros, maximum . So the 74 000 extra euros are just for the label .
If you are crazy enough to buy a label for 70 000 euros , then you need to rethink your life priorities .
Morgan Olfursson they use the best of everything including the best in he business. That cost money and by their, and other fashion houses continued sucess it looks like there is most definitely a market for it

It's the opposite! For the haute couture First came the sketch then they choose the right model and at the and then this wonderful and gifted hands sew the dress. Those clothes are just made-to-order

Wages of all those number of people working on one dress, x the talent and skill, x excellent materials used, x cost of premises and their maintenance, x other fixed costs including utilities, x the time spent on the project..... It’s not just a dress, it’s a WORK OF ART AND YOU GET TO WEAR IT.
These dresses are so expensive because the craftsmen create each piece of these dresses by hand. The video lasts three minutes, but the dress itself is created for months. All embroidery is done by hand, it is a unique thing, created with love and patience. This is art.
Watching this showed me why my fashion designing teachers are so picky about the techniques and finishing and stuff.
This motivates me to get up and do something with my life
I love how neat and orderly everything looks in here. I wish I could just stand around watching everyone do their stuff all day long. How about make a long movie, a documentary, and put a lot of pretty music in there to give the idea of how peaceful it is to be a couture artist. I would love that, and everyone else too!

I've always had a preference for hand sewing. I was taught by the Catholic nuns when I went to boarding school. Embroidering and beading are my favorite. It's a lost art with a beautiful result.

Couture is handmade and Ready-to-wear is mass made, made with machines. This why luxury brands are so expensive, they are utilizing the best textiles - fabrics and notions. Then incredibly talented sewists, that have years/decades of experience, along with beaders, embroiders and any other specialized detail work create each panel by hand.
Haute couture is mend to be handmade, but nowadays they use machines sometimes

The fashion industry is a perfect analogy on the world order. These industrious clever women working away at the tedious task of sewing small things do not receive the acknowledgement they deserve. Ever. While the designers take the bows and these brilliant creations are forever draped on vacuous hangers whose only talent for the most is walking while skinny. C’est la vie.

I hope who ever ends up with these pieces....IF???They watch this and understand what they really HAVE. Its more than just a dress.
I can make one for you bring me all the materials. Of course this is why in French they call it Haute couture. Those dresses take months a lot of hand washing, a lot off fitting. The only things if you trust me enough to make one for you it won’t be a Christian Dior. So many people out there who can make beautiful arts work for cheaper but people preferred brand names. Ordinary people confection those dresses at Dior. Is a team work. Some designers don’t even know how to handle a needle.
In agreement with you but let's not take away the amount of work that goes into creating a brand too but yeah you're so right there's so many artistic stitcher's and seamstresses whose work goes unnoticed and under valued because they haven't got a brand name.
