Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It’s a very specific subject, and you’re the only one to address it. Big note: if your electric starter won’t start the engine because it just spins, the pull start starter won’t work either. Both the electric starter and pull starter run through the starter clutch. If the starter clutch is shot, your pull starter won’t work either. Honda shows a pull rope starter for my 2007 TRX420TM. It looks like an exact duplicate, minus the capacitor. Thanks again.
@@JDSOutdoors I have a bad starter clutch and was going to outsmart the Honda designers and just abandon the electric starter and install a pull start. Watching your video, I saw that the pull starter couples with the starter clutch. The electric starter is gear driving the gear that your new pull starter is bolted to. You can see the clutch “rollers” surrounding the bolt hole for the new piece. Your just coming at the clutch from a different direction.
I got one for my 2021 Rubicon, works perfectly. It's the same set up as the Rancher. No more having to tote a portable battery jumper all the time. The Canadians have it lucky, because all their models already have them installed.
I agree that Honda makes finding some parts difficult. That kit is a must for our ‘22 Ranchers. I just don’t know if my wife can pull start it, but it will be there for somebody. Very nice job on the video with a stable camera well positioned. Thank you and happing riding.
I had to take out the air filter first in mine before installing, but did not disassemble as much as you did. Very useful video, thank you. I had to have help getting those four screws in on the cover, very small clearances.
That pull starter kit is a nice mod for sure. I used to have a 1988 Honda 250 2X4 ATV which came with a kick starter as a backup to the electric starter. My 2016 Honda 420 Rancher (manual like yours) did not have that option so this pull starer kit is a must in the event your electric starter motor quits or you have a dead battery. My rincon has has the factory pull start on it. I have always wondered if it would start if the battery was to dead to run the fuel pump.I didn’t realize they have that electric piece to get the fuel injector started.
Great Video~ I have a 2017 and the Solenoid stuck and burnt up the Starter. I looked things over and thought..Hmmmm, I wonder how much a pull start is for this thing. So off to google I go. I found a pull start with the same model number for around 75.00 New starter and Solenoid are around 350.00 Not to mention this pull start is much easier to get to.
Hearing this might tick you off. All honda quads sold in Canada come with the pull start on the machine right from the factory. How much is the recoil worth?

Your video explains it well, good video, I have a 2011, 420 rancher. The electric starter just gave out. Going to replace it and install the pull starter as well. Hopefully Honda didn't make to many changes from 2011 to 2015.
Would you suggest using a dab of blue Loc-tight on all the bolts? Also, that kit comes with another wiring harness and another part that looks like a transformer of some type. I believe those extra parts are for Rancher 420 models with certain accessories. Did you leave those parts out of this video because they didn't pertain to your specific model? I wonder if the Honda parts man removed them since they weren't necessary for your application.........and then restocked them for future sales?? It wouldn't be the first time I've seen parts people do that.
Only thing I'm afraid of is it kinda of inviting water to get in. That was a problem with Hondas in early 2000 models I figured that's why they stopped installing from the factory

They guy won it from a raffle at Honda dealership and I bought it off him as he wanted some cash Instead. So I avoided any dealer fees and all that.

I also added the Honda 12v accessory plug to charge phone or play sterio or for a 12c air compressor in case I get a flat tire on the trail!
If your battery completely fails while out riding and it will NOT produce any direct current to the fuel pump before the motor starts ur screwed...It happened to me..Ive ridden 3wheelers and 4wheelers for 37 years and I've had batteries go dead on me before but always had a back-up auxiliary kick start or pull start option and they crank right up u can also push start the manual foot shift Atvs but all those 3/4wheelers had a CARBURETOR so they used gravity to fill the carburetor bowl...The new Fuel Injected Atvs WILL NOT run without a good strong battery period..Since it got me lol..I carry a small jumper box with me on the long rides...Hope this helps some one!

My little capacitor thing got ruined the wires broke and it still pulls over and cranks up fine 🤷♂️ I went to my local Honda dealer and asked what it was for and they said well it’s a $360 part and if the bike is working fine without it no need to buy one they said .

I was thinking the same thing because it’s a metal or metal contact surface area when adding the pull starter cover. Maybe just a small layer of etc would prevent water from entering the case.
I thought so it looked the same. Just so you are aware the plastics are not all the same so you would have to give the vin to the dealer to get the correct plastics. I found out the hard way if anyone is looking for NEW RED plastics let me know. You cannot get plastics anymore as Honda has nothing left and nowhere to be seen in the future
Using starter rope you can lock the engine. Just take the spark plug out. Then you put it inside, won’t harm the anything. It compresses the rope inbetween the head and piston. To be done when you don’t have impact wrench.
Not sure about with Hondas my Can-Am I can just put it in park and the transmission holds the engine I'd assume it's the same Hondas don't have a clutch and some of them are actually manual shift so there's gears to hold it should work in theory

I think I would have wiped a light film of clean oil on the seal & O ring before installing it. Great job on the video!

I have a 2015 Honda Rancher TRX420FE1. I installed the pull start kit and it works perfectly! Installing that seal was a little bit of a chore though.

It will start with a dead battery it wont start with the battery missing. It just needs a tiny amount of juice to start with the pull starter.

I actually just looked at one at the dealer last week. Everything looks the same to me I would think you wouldn't have any issues with that same kit.

My battery died and this started it no problem. As long as you have a good stator your good.
Great video. Quick tip u could put bike in 4x4 IF it is and also put bike in reverse or drive keep it from turning some
Funny in Canada the pull cord system comes as standard feature, I just bought a 2019 rancher with on.
Since posting this I've found that out. Pretty strange they dont do that in northern mn

My 2018 BRP Outlander 450 did not. Bought it in Ontario.

Do believe so. The kit i purchased was for up to 2014. So your atv should have a part number for the kit at your local dealer

What purpose does the capacitor serve?
It plugs into the wiring harness as shown and essentially tells the injectors to spray feul into the cylinder.
What model is your atv exactly. Is it foot shift?

Just got done re-installing the mounting bolts. Dealer did not use thread lock apparantly.
