What an interesting book. Especially with the wisdom of hindsight and where we are now in this chaotic world. The narration was 100%. I had heard of this book, but not read. Glad I had the opportunity to listen to it. Thank you for posting
Heh, opposite almost. I read this years ago, then saw this and wondered if I knew the story, then I remembered the movie too. Going to enjoy listening again!
Thank you so much. What an amazing book. It truly left me speechless. It is such a different book as what I expected. I even thought of skipping it, in the beginning. Not my cuppa tea I thought. How happy that I continued. Beyond being thriling, hair raising actually, I feel it really teached me something. And this combined with an excellent reading voice that made me see it all right before my very eyes. Thank you. Wow! Highly recommended!
This story should serve as an indirect lesson in resisting the politics of fear. There were people (like Detective Graham) in the 80s and early 90s who were actually scared that the Japanese had serious designs on taking over America through economic rather than military means. Obviously nothing of the sort came close to happening. We should keep this in mind when politicians of our time attempt to capitalize on fears regarding different people groups.
I think many of the fears of Japan dominating our economy were accurate, but just haven't been fully realized. America still has yet to face the consequences of its enormous government, corporate, and personal debt. Our quality of life is dramatically declining as the dollar gradually has less purchasing power in foreign goods. The fact that we manufacture so few of the goods we consume is becoming an increasingly larger problem. Japan has also devalued their own currency, which has mitigated the problem, but it's still there. It's sort of like the person who has jumped off the building but hasn't hit the ground yet. Everything is good so far!
Those fears were only held by economic ignoramuses that did not understand the massive shortcomings of the zaibatsu model or detrimental effect gigantic government spending, debt and regulation have on the economy. The fallout is still being felt as Japan works on a third consecutive lost decade.
Harvey Keitel was perfect casting for Detective Graham. Obvious Crichton wrote the character John Conner with Sean Connery in mind to play him in the eventual movie.
In 1991, I remember discussing a presentation with a guy for a meeting. He informed me that all meetings, for August 6 are postponed because the Japanese won't show up.
Written during Japanese economic ascendancy Time of the Tigers. We sold them everything inflated prices when they're economy hit the skids we purchased it back below market value. Then joked about payback for Pearl Harbor.
Was a movie with Sean Connery. I like both treatments okay. The story-telling style of flashing back was handled almost as well in the movie as the book, but I find that type of story awkward. I'd like a story to flash forward, please.
How quaint this is. Back then we were convinced that Japan was gonna eat our lunch. Nowadays, pish tosh. Crichton didn’t factor in things like changing demographics, and the possibility that other countries would take Japan’s model and do it better. Now it’s just a country full of old folks, and their xenophobia will never allow them to permit immigration. One other thing- you could take this novel and change industry to warfare and it would play out the same. The way they look down on other races? Nanking massacre, treatment of western prisoners, etc etc. PS- he’s crazy for not considering dating the lady with one arm. She sounds lovely.

Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes played the leads in the movie.

Solid Crichton (if not slightly dated.)
Narrator: Macloed Andrew A+.

Le livre est plus intéressant que le film! Et la narration est excellente. Merci pour ce partage littéraire😊

I know right…
All those millions of Japanese sneaking into the country in the 80’s. 🙄🎶🎵

Never saw the movie but loved the book
The movie was good but it left out a lot which is a shame
The movie is trash. Crichton left the project because of how bad it was.
Thanks

I love a good mystery but man this was tough to get through. It’s extremely alarmist. It almost seems like satire at times.
Was so glad this book was over depressing???!

...And now possibly needing Japan to have a strong economy to build naval vessels which might be needed to help out..
Interesting.

Considering japan is now a society in decline because of the steep decline in births, the assertions in this book are laughable!
Of course Japan is not the country it once was. Consider how long ago this book was written

Unfortunately not at all dated and now US assets will be given to other nations even faster from 2025
So Michael Crichton hates America and loves Japan
just another American hater
