- Hey! In this video I will share with you the five most common mistakes junior designers make - many of which can be a deciding factor whether they will get their first UX job or not. There's of course more to getting a UX job, including good portfolio practices, resume, cover letters, ux interviews and so on, but fix these five things and your chances will improve a lot!

Great video Malewicz, deeply appreciated. I have been guilty of most of the things you have mentioned in this video, but I also noticed that very few companies are willing to hire from abroad (maybe due to cost or policies). I am currently based in Nigeria and I have had a couple of interesting interviews and some of the recruiters have personally told me it is easier for them to hire someone within the country than getting someone from abroad, though I am working hard to get a visa to Europe, then I feel I can really show myself and become a better designer.
Keep up the good work.
Sometimes that may be true, but I've heard about many companies in EU hiring people from countries that are not very open to giving out visas and it worked every time. I think it's best to focus on the quality of your work, when it's stellar companies will fight for you no matter where you're based :)

Thanks for the informative video. What would you suggest is the best way to present a portfolio? Good examples of a portfolio would be fantastic.
I actually made a short course on exactly that, during which I build a case study from scratch.
But the portfolio itself, it's best for it to be a website, and no "intro" screens. Start with your projects front and center, possibly placed in mockups, then a short about, photo and a contact + social media links.
Many people make the mistake of creating an intro page or a big "about me" page on the top, but most recruiters are impatient and they don't scroll sometimes, so you need to show them the actual work as quickly as possible.
Also 5-6 case studies is now a must to stand out :)

I am currently doing the Google UX course and am a far ways away from applying but this still was so helpful when looking at my work now. Also, do you have any recommendations for getting other UX designers eyes on my projects while in the course and outside it so they can be as good as they can be? I'm not friends with anyone who's currently working in the UX field.

do I have to change the language?
Likely - yes. While it doesn't affect the designs that much, being able to understand them can be a crucial part of the decision for hiring.
Hi Michal, what if I want to focus more on UI design should I include research on my portfolio? Or just show my UI design process?
That's a tough question, because as I believe UX designers should know UI, it doesn't work exactly the same the other way around - if you're "just" a UI designer you can earn more than most UX designers who know just a little UI. But I'd go with showing a little bit of the full UX process as well - even if you prefer UI.

When starting a brand new project, is the user persona the initial research is based on assumed or based on competitors?
Let's assume the product is a brand new invention...
Real projects usually have market data already done by the product team, so UX designers rarely ever make personas. And in for-fun / portfolio projects you can try to assume it based on the competition so it makes some sense in the case study.

I think that wearing sunglasses in a dark room is a UX mistake 😄 it looks very unnatural + the perception is disturbed when you can’t see someone’s eyes. 👀 unless you aren’t Stevie Wonder or David Lynch vloging 👍🏻😏
I used an ND filter on the lens, but it was actually VERY bright in the room - that's why I had to get the glasses 🤷
