  • In this video I'll show you tried and tested techniques my community members used in 2022 to get their very first industry job. I'll guide you through the three main steps that surprisingly small number of designers actually do in their entirety. If you want to be a successful ux/ui designer in 2023, make sure to take notes and then take action!
This is based on over 500 portfolios I've seen last year, hundreds of stories of juniors getting a job, evaluations, 1on1 discussions and talks with medium and small companies.
Why focusing on smaller enterprises? Well in case you haven't noticed all the big ones are now FIRING instead if HIRING. I believe it's for the better as in a small company there's more chances to grow as a designer and learn other skills like user research, usability studies, competitive analysis, interaction design, animations, working with developers and a lot more.
2023 is going to be fun :-)

Thanks a lot. That was such an encouraging and useful video packed with practical tips. I agree that UI is just as important as UX especially when starting out. In my opinion, the beautiful UI comes down to a harmonious relationship between UI elements such as icons, buttons, font size, input field, etc. However, it's not easy to decide the size of UI elements with confidence. Do you have any tips on how you decide the size of different UI elements for different screen sizes such as mobile and desktop? If you happen to follow the design systems and interface guidelines for that, what should we look for exactly and how should we use them to our advantage?

I really agree with your point about how some user research done for spec work portfolios don't have as much weight considering you don't have access to data and even your vetting process for good research participants could be extremely flawed.
Having exceptional visual design skills and then getting a job that allows you to pivot into research would be an awesome way to learn and get better. When you're now dealing with real data and research resources, you can really prove that you can research well in that scenario.

Your video is the specific actions bridge the gap between what we would like to have done /our goals and intention/ and all possible physical actions.
About networking I remember this quote by Adam Grant /psychologist, writer/:
"Authenticity is not about being unfiltred. It's about staying true to your principles.
The goal isn't to voice every opinion you hold.
It's to STAND UP for ideas that are consistent with your ideas.

I love your videos, I feel like this info is just what I need to get me going in this field. I am currently learning UI design, formerly a web/multimedia designer from 10 years ago. I decided to take a leave of absence for family reasons. I guess that is my biggest obstacle right now- looking good to employers when I am almost 50 and also having a 10 year hiatus. Personally, I feel like coming at UI from a deep foundation in web design when the web was in its infancy should actually be a big asset, but its seems as though they want the fresh, young designers.

I agree with you brother, kind of like a leech mentality sort of thing that I don’t want to be a part of. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate people…it’s just I’m at a point where I can detect when conversations are either genuine or just mouth breathers throwing their 2 cents in to appear interested. It’s a clout game at this point. Then again, as a product designer, that’s the main purpose of these platforms is to keep people consuming for as long and frequently as possible. Kudos to you though. Thanks! Malewicz , A piece of great information for people like me, I am also doing a Coursera google course, 2 finished, 3rd pursuing, It's a good course to give the basic knowledge and to understand the base of UX, But of only the course certificate and case study is not gonna help me to get a job, as I think, I would use the basic knowledge to enhance in my own research, real user interview, real data problem statement. With all the help, I can expertise my design thinking, UI, and networking discussion. Competitive analysis is a hard thing to do for me, what to observe in an App or Website, It's like being in a design review without information about it. Can you provide some observations on that?

So, I just started a UX Design course which does include some UI training but towards the end of the course. I chose that one instead of the UI-focused course because several Junior designers told me understanding UX is critical to being a good UI designer.
Now that I've started the course the Design Lead at my current company told me I should have strong UI skills instead and the UX is gonna be learned "on the go". I feel like I fucked myself over but I'll try to learn the UI on the go. Good thing is, the Design Lead told me it's supposedly doable and as long as I have solid basics in UI I have a shot at moving to the Design team internally. I feel like in the current market this would be my best shot but I'm also terrified xD

Hey, do you plan on making a video (or a course if that doesn't exist yet) on photo-heavy sites? Most of your things focus on digital visuals generated by digitally but what if you have a lot of (full-size) photos to display?

I get interviews for Junior UX Designer role and they like my portfolio and interviewers like my portfolio say I’ve got strong processes in my projects but someone else has got a bit more experience so I miss out. I’ve recently completed a redesign of a landing page for a private client it wasn’t a big project and it will be going in my portfolio. Do you any any tips for people who have decent portfolios but lack commercial experience?

What should I do? Shall I start making projects side by side or only watch more videos? Lastly is this career switch a good option?

Hi, so is it better to go more Visual Focus than Research Focus for case studies ??

    • @MalewiczHype
      @MalewiczHype  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Both are good, but if you don't have any meaningful research it's best to add more visual explorations (styleguide, various options, accessibility checks and more).
And you can do some basic research of course, but being research heavy I don't think is that necessary for MOST businesses (esp. small and medium ones).
Maybe big corporations look more at research but they're not hiring now anyway.

Now recruiters seem not so interested in any case studies based on hypothetical situations, cause most junior designers don't have real life projects to show.
