I live in Volcano on the Big Island and have taken both my 4x4s down this road a number of times--- a few observations: (1) At 9:03 the poster encounters tourists in the red Jeep making a wrong turn in an attempt to get back up the hill. This is normal...if you turn right at that fork seen at 9:09 the dirt road will take you to the Black Sands Beach area where sometimes you will find horses grazing by themselves! Be careful though, as sections of the beach-bound road look like the moon and the various dips and holes rapidly fill with water; stuff is deeper that it looks. It also gets very slippery and muddy after it rains. Also, try not to splash hikers. (2) I have seen people take Honda Ridgelines & Pilots down this road. While they made it, keep in mind those vehicles are AWD with computer trickery to mimic 4WD; they do not have a low range and only a 15:1 crawl ratio. This is hard on their brakes. (3) I helped a tourist put the front bumper cover of his rented Chevy Tahoe in the back of his SUV after he tore it off driving the beach section; that probably lead to an awkward conversation with Enterprise Rent A Car. (4) While my 2.5" lifted/31" tire 2012 Chevy Avalanche 4x4 (which is a Chevy Suburban with its back roof cut off) makes the trip just fine, it is admittedly big and ungainly on that road's bottleneck section at 7:06 and that sharp right at 9:09. I prefer taking my 30-year old Suzuki Jimny (RHD JDM Samurai) because it is FAR more maneuverable and has better gearing. (5) The vehicles you see most are Jeeps and Tacomas.
isn't using 4x4 on sharp turns on the pavement bad for the drivetrain? I always thought 4x4 should only be used on loose surfaces so the wheels can still rotate at the same speed even when making sharp turns
Thank you for the tips, I was visiting the island and heard that this was a must see but was nervous about making the drive. We had a Jeep Rubicon, and it handled it no sweat. I saw other lesser jeeps (like a renegade) making the trip ok. Some of those puddles on the beach road were indeed deep, I'm glad we had the clearance!
I can't imagine what this road must have been like BEFORE it was paved and how difficult it must have been to pave it and move all that heavy machinery on such a steep road!
Great video! I stayed at the house you drove by at 13:24 for a few days and had a blast in the Waipio Valley. Not as scary of a road as everyone makes it sound but 4*4 is a must!
Sorry for replying late. Thanks for your comment! It's amazing to stay in Waipio Valley.😄 4*4 is a must. Opinions of experience. I'm glad information sharing is required.
How would you drive up? I am N experience driver. Driven in combat. However i have never experienced a 4x4 drive. Do you think that with the proper knowledge on how to with a 4x4, will I be alright?
If you are visiting, why think about driving? Park and walk down and admire the view, something you cannot do if you are driving down . Yes, its not easy, but its certainly doable. When you get to the bottom, turn right toward the beach. The people who live in the valley do not appreciate your wandering around on their property.
Thank you for watching.💕 You can't go just with the performance of the jeep. Sufficient driving skills are required. When one person stops, no one can pass through. Also, rental cars are likely to be out of insurance. be careful. Mahalo.🌴🌈🤙
i really wanted to go down this route, but felt i was intruding on the people down in the valley on our last visit...glad you posted this
...now i see i didn't have to think that

展望台からの景色も素晴らしいですが、渓谷に降りると、また別の景色が見ることができて、楽しそうですね。私の運転技術では、とても降りれそうにもありません。
急な坂を歩いている人が、思ったよりも多く、驚きました。

Imagine at night
That repetitive music is a nuisance.
Thank you for watching.💕
Please turn down the volume.🔇
There is no talk in my video, so you can watch it without problems.
