When they opened up until like six months ago, I emailed them three different times to ask questions about a rayon fabric I wanted to purchase. I haven’t got a response yet so that’s probably part of the problem is customer service.
I'm not surprised Melanated Fabrics is closing. I used to follow Mimi closely several years ago but I noticed over the years she changes her focus real frequently. Currently, I believe she has a major position with some or all of the big four pattern companies. Brittany of course has a family with younger children and probably needs to devote her attention to them. I won't be surprised if they're working on something new, but I definitely wish them good luck and nothing but blessings in their new endeavors.
No, I think in their case both Mimi and Brittany work for SCG and it’s just too much to run both an in person store and design/work for SCG. We have two successful indie stores (same owner) 100 miles apart. The shop owner (and her staff) work long hours and it's a ton of work. Plus there are other indie stores in just my state alone. Joann is another issue entirely and that’s too long for a comment!
I hadn't heard from them until I learned they went out of business. Not a fan of Mimi G; I remember back in her blog days and she seemed snooty to me. I used to have a sewing blog and posted a dress that looked like a flour sack on me. I found her blog when she linked to my post. She posted her own version of the dress and asked her readers if it looked like a sack on her. It just seemed like an excuse for her to brag about how great she looked. Didn't bother commenting on my blog post or anything.
Cringy to run a business based on skin color. Maybe that’s why it went out of business because it was too niche or maybe the economy sucks and lots of stores are closing.
Cringy, really? Tell that to all the hair salons that only put up posters and pictures of white women because none of the cosmetologists are capable of styling black hair. That's just one example. There are many that I can give you where the dominant culture runs businesses based on skin color. But, because you're in the dominant culture where everything is made with you in mind, you think it's cringy when melanated people create things with themselves in mind. In other words, it's only a problem when white people aren't centered. You went straight to race when cultural taste is what makes the difference. Melanated people's food is spicier and/or more flavorful, and we're more expressive which comes out in the colors and color combinations we like as well as in our arts. Yes, we're all equal and have something valuable to contribute, but we're not all the same *and that's okay* . It's not cringy.

Everything went fast on their website.
Shipping cost is what prevented me from buying

That would make me feel badly. I'm sorry that happened to you.
Yeah, she’s not really relatable sometimes.
Please Don't let one person's opinion stop you from doing what you enjoy!
Their prices were too high.
Whattttttt????? Hancock and fabric is gone 😢😢😢😢
Online store out of stock. I didn’t find anything left
I think they had the most beautiful fabric
they'll be fine. they both have patterns in retail circulation.
Does Hobby Lobby still sell fabric?
Yes, but mostly for quilting.
Yes they do
We have a good selection of Hobby Lobby in NY
16/yard I’d out of my price range unless I’m making a tote bag, or a pouch.

What a cringey thing to say… It’s not like they only sold fabric to Black ppl.
Ugh...whatever.
Oh no. This is sad.
