Fantastic lesson, there’s so much context in there, and so many ideas I could spend months going over this video. I’m definitely “old school” RnB, Soul and Motown fan, loved the era of “Northern Soul” back in the day. If I was asked what video would you take with you to a desert island, it would be this one ! Many thanks for this lesson, soooooo pleased I discovered your channel.
Thanks, Alun. That’s a nice bass (sold though…) going into a good DI going into an Apollo 8. So the chain is simple, but good and I try to play solid and clean. I can do a signal chain/tone video if you like. Let me know!
Thanks for that lesson. Really good content in here for my level of playing. I don't listen to much Rhythm n Blues but I really dig the vibe of it on bass. I will watch this tutorial again and again and practice these shapes and grooves until I get them into my playing. Thanks again. B
Nice one Brandon. This style is a gold mine for bass players. The nice thing is that you can use these patterns in other styles too. Definitely a great idea to memorise all the patterns. Thanks for watching!
Yes, this sounded great over your D7 backing track! To me, the backing track stayed on D7, is that right? In a song where chords change, am I right to assume you’d move the shape to the next chord? So for example, I may play the root, flat 3rd, major 3rd and flat 7th on the D7 chord, starting at the 5th fret of A string, but then if the next chord was, for example, A, I’d then move the shape to start on 5th fret of E string, or would I stay noodling with the various shapes as if every chord was D7?
02:04 there are so many Rock n Roll Songs that use this one but i can‘t read the notes or what they are called and i can‘t See on which Part of the String your Fingers are
Easiest thing to do is to download the (free) PDF with all the shapes on. Then you can start practising them all. The link is in the description. Enjoy!
This is an amazing lesson! Ive been looking for something like this for a while! Can you do more lessons on the Old School Soul, Funk, Motown and R&B for bass? Even things like Charles Bradly and Lee Fields (Nick Movshon basslines) Thank you! Again, fantastic lesson, very informative and to the point! 🙏🏽
Really appreciate these lessons / insights. May I ask how you developed your legatto sound? I feel like it probably comes over time, but I would like to develope a better swing sound.
Thanks! You’re right, it’s definitely time. However, I worked a lot on articulations (hammer-ons etc.) first at slow tempo then with a metronome. Just running scales etc. I’ll do a video on it if you like.
Dan Hawkins Bass Lessons - Thank you sir. A video would be great. I was listening to a Jimmy Smith recording- Dot Com Blues - Only in it for the money. Reggie McBride is on Bass. Such a smooth swing feel.

Yes you’re correct! Just move the pattern around.
What about modern RnB? What Scales and Patterns are mostly used?
Good question. I’m not very knowledgeable in that genre but I would wager Natural Minor and major scales. They cover an awful lot of styles.

Hi Dan, love the channel, is that a 75 jazz bass?
Thanks Trevor. That's a modified Japanese reissue from the '90s. Sold now. I do have an original '75.
