So far everything is calm and happy, but I didn't know this before, and I have been trying to follow your advice. My old dog has just recently started giving my new one his "hard eye" but I'm always there to stop her from harassing him and him from bossing her because you warned me! Thanks again. Mine did it at 5 months, just this past Friday June 7, 2019. I made these mistakes and the fights started. 7 fights in the same day and my house is a complete mess. We are at a loss trying to fix two dogs behaviors and get them to come back together so they can get along. I wish I would have seen this video beforehand. Now, they are separated in the house and we are trying to slowly work and control both their focuses.

    I’ve always corrected behaviors because I don’t want my older dog to get hurt on accident. I knew without a doubt my Rottweiler (m) would be larger than my old catahoula mix (f). He is 10 months now and twice her size, she is only 52lbs and he is going to get heavy. He is so gentle with her even when she starts the play. I just never wanted him to land on her wrong and hurt her because of his size. So I’ve always taught boundaries. I also don’t want him to hurt anybody on accident like kids or elderly. So he has to be calm with people.

    VIDEO IDEAS. Large-small dog ownership is very popular. I have a 6 month old male Dalmatian-boxer mix and a 4 month old female Pomeranian. They love each other. Am I going to have that issue with a large and small dog? Would you do a video on what to do so aggressive behavior doesn’t start?
    Also, because she is small, they have to play in the house. I make them ‘lay and play’ but when he gets the zoomies all bets are off. He runs over her and I’m afraid she’ll get hurt. Yes, she thinks she’s boss and acts tough, but she’s 4 lbs and he’s 35. Would love your advice. Thanks Larry

    I would love your advice on how to train an apartment dog using the free dog command. It seems I am needing three commands for three levels of freedom (?) I would like my dog to be able to stay at my side on a leash when walking (#1), I would like my dog to have "free dog" time off leash usually provided at a dog park (#2), but I also need an in between level of freedom when I walk my dog on a leash for the purpose of pottying the dog. I want him to have the freedom to smell trees, sniff around and have some time for doing his business. But in this time of "freedom" when he does not need to be at my side he still needs to be on a leash due to apartment regulation. Can I expect my dog to be on leash and sniffing around, but still not pulling me across the grass? How could I train this into my dog?

    So should I not let the adult dog correct the puppy's behavior? I was told that I was supposed to let my other dog correct him when he did things he shouldn't around him but I correct Ozzy when he jumps in his face or barks in his face. I would love to see a video of how your puppy should and should not behave around the older dogs. I need help with that because I made the very mistake you speak of with my other dog and my older dog. I let him do what he wanted around my older dog and they fought constantly.

    Great advice and video! How do you help teach them to be calm inside the house? I have two dogs and one is a puppy but the older one instigates play inside and I delegate them or put them in a down but they just go right back to each other. Any other tips? If I put them outside they play but not as much, I also don’t trust the puppy with freedom outside just yet. Thanks!

    • @Orangedrink10

      put the puppy on a leash. when one dog instigates play you correct it. until the dogs can remain calm all the time in the house on leash keep it on him. For a puppy they shouldnt have freedom in the house til at least a year old preferably 2 years. use a crate and a leash in the house. you have to advocate for the dogs. if not you too will be faced with this exact issue

Do you think it would be better to have a male and female than two female pups? I was told a male a female would get along better. When your dog knows that everything good in his life comes from you, you set the dog up to be very manageable/successful. Which is what most people want out of their dog. Unless you have a lot of experience/patience/time, You bringing in another puppy right now will cause you nothing but MISERY. Please don't do it.

  • @ROBDee-ho9lu
    @ROBDee-ho9lu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If only all people would listen to you, Larry. But not all people are capable to be really in charge of their dogs. I think it is not something that people can 'learn', they have it in them or they don't have it. I'm a 74 yr old woman and had abt 20 dogs in my life (this account belongs to my son) and none of them have ever been fighting other dogs in or outside my home. Because they know they don't have to because I AM in charge, they can count on me. And I have had really big, strong dogs like 2 Dobermans, Dutch and German shepherd, Barzoi, (to name some). Calm but firm approach, limitations, boundaries, love and play. If people only would use their BRAIN!: if you don't want a 40 kg dog in your bed, don't tolerate an 8 weeks old pup in your bed. Be consequent: if something is forbidden it must ALWAYS be forbidden, not 1 time yes and another time no. Dogs don't understand that.

    Our 4.5 month old GSD is a total pain in the @$$. Don't get me wrong she's brilliant and so smart she's learned just about every trick in the book. But without food or if she is distracted, there is no talking to her or getting her to listen. She jumps all over anyone who comes in the house as a guest. My wife sits on the couch and she jumps all over her and never stops nipping and biting. I correct I put her on time outs in her kennel. I tell her no and stay down nothing works. We are having company over for the first time this Friday and I am embarrassed and scared of the results. At 46lbs of jumping puppy muscle biting and nipping at everything in sight she might just have to stay kenneled up. But as you said in this video. I don't want to start down that path with her. I want her to feel like a part of the family and learn and understand how to be part of the family. She LOVES kids, but if she sees a 2-4yo child she immediately goes from level 1-10 instantly wanting to jump all over them and bite their hands face etc. She's becoming a liability. Will age change the behavior? Possibly, but what if it doesn't? I'm debating introducing an E-Collar but don't want to do it the wrong way. I'm going to be going over your E-Collar training videos and deciding. But at this point, the gloves are off so to speak. I'm done with Mr Nice guy. This little girl needs to understand and understand now jumping up and biting people is not going to be tolerated.

    • @Orangedrink10
      @Orangedrink10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      your dog needs to be on a leash or in the crate at all times in the house. then theres no way they can jump on people. you have to show your dog what calm is and what you want. Im not sure what you plan on doing with the ecollar but nothing should be taught with it. the ecollar is a way to reinforce what the dog already knows. I would start with a leash and kennel 100% of the time while in the house. remember, just becasue you say "no" or you are giving what seems like good corrections doesnt mean that that is the case. the correction has to be meaningful to the dog. just because you think it should be meaningful doesnt mean it is. your dog will let you know what is meaningful.

      Mike O'Connell 4 1/2 month old puppies are still very mouthy. I looked like a heroin addict when my GSD was that age, and boy, are their teeth sharp. Do not allow him to jump on anyone coming in by putting a leash on, putting him in a down and stepping on leash, then lots of treats and praise. Also, if you haven’t done do already, put on a sprenger prong collar. Teach place command, with leash on, teach kennel command, with leash on. Don’t bother with the word NO, it doesn’t mean anything anyway. Don’t yell, stay calm and quiet. The fewer words the better. Also, when he does get your hands, arms, ankles in his mouth, Yelp like an injured puppy, he’ll understand that. Then bait and switch with a bully stick to chew on. Good luck

    Puppies need to grow up in a pack to learn what is and what is not appropriate, including when they should and should not use their teeth. Dogs from breeders are often separated from their parents or even other dogs early on. They have never learned any rules. The best dogs to be adopted is a mix, not a pure breed, cause most pure breed dogs are from breeders.

I have broken up dog fights and made everyone be friends again. But I currently have a springer who is very shy (we adopted her at one years old, I believe she was over trained and lost her sprit. She came to me very broken emotionally. She still will not touch toys at all.) We had her with a male cocker who was madly in love with her, who helped her to be out going, but he passed away. So... I am on a waiting list for Doberman puppy, I'm not sure how they will go, being that she shy. I'm wondering now if I should get another gun dog instead of a Doberman (the dobe will be from show lines not working.) just think about anything a puppy does that you wouldnt want a full grown dog to do. do you want a 100 lb dog jumping on people? biting or nipping? screaming through the house at 100mph? jumping on counters? you have to show your dog what you want first.be fair to him/her and set them up for success. When they have a good idea of what you want and they behave otherwise correct it.

      Fred Herrera - he isn’t crazy. He was a puppy and you didn’t know how to handle him.

    Wish I watched this before my male german shepherd attacked the 7 month old...who at that point was bigger than the adult. The puppy laid on his back cried and pissed himself. I had to pull the adult off him by the tail. It happened 3 times even though I was doing the shuffle of crates outside. The second time it happened I slipped in the piss? My leg got right in the middle of the dogs and my calf got bit. My older dog realized it was me and didn't fully bite me no broken skin but pain. The last time I was letting two in and the puppy and lab out. I had control of puppy but not older dog. He got around me So fast and the puppy again on his back pissed himself crying...a took a chair like a lion tamer and separated. As I bring adult to a different room the female German attacked him. I just grabbed her by her neck and she stopped. They are fine for my husband but when off the leash they do not listen to me. I'm still working hard though. My poor puppy😞
