We're killers, but we're not going to kill today! (Kirk Speech)

  • Another Kirk speech, this time on 'humans are barbarians which are able to train themselves to fight the urge to kill'. Kirk convinces Anan 7 to make peace with the enemy and end a war that is going on for five hundred years. According to the story of A Taste of Armageddon that war never ended, because the councils of Eminiar Seven and Vendikar agreed to let the war be fought by computers which calculate casualties who then walk into disintegration machines. Anan 7 believes this method of waging war is less barbaric, more civilized. Kirk destroys the war computers on Eminiar Seven to give the bloody reality of a real war back to the councils of Eminiar Seven and Vendikar to make them end the war as fast as possible.

    If you've watched this video and have been shown an ad: the money doesn't go to me, it goes to CBS who owns the copyright. I have uploaded this scene of the Star Trek episode "A Taste of Armageddon" with the message in mind. It's sort of an advertisement also - not for any money - but because I believe that the story is important in the world of today. I fully affirm and welcome that any money made by this video goes to the rightful owner of its content.

      I believe the overall message Roddenberry was trying to subtly put forth in the series is still important today. Not just this scene or episode but throughout. Sadly, the new spinoff are nothing more than corporate drek and in many way the antithesis of his message. Thanks for posting.

      This is one of the most important quotes from the whole franchise of Star Trek. Yes, we are a killer species, ( not herbavores! ) But we make the choice to not kill today. That's all it takes to start to make peace. Our Politicians need to hear this message all the time. Stop the Wars. Make Peace. Just for today, NATO, USA, Russia, China, and all the nations of planet Earth: Make Peace ! Today !

    I started watching TOS for the first time recently, and was pretty surprised to see that Kirk didn't quite match up to his reputation. I mean sure, he's got that hot streak and he's kissed a couple of women, but stuff like this shows that he could be just as diplomatic as Picard, and the show as a whole could be just as thought-provoking. And what I find interesting is that, while we like to say things like "still sadly relevant today", this episode demonstrates that it'll always be true. We're all humans, and despite Roddenberry's insistence that his 24th century denizens had grown past the need for war and power, there's proof that it'll always be there. The true evolution will be in our power to stop it, not completely ignore or eliminate it.

    • @MarvinFalz
      @MarvinFalz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Roddenberry's vision of the future is a nice fantasy, nonetheless inspiring, and something worth aspiring to. What they got right from the start, is that humans aren't God, and humans aren't able to create paradise. We're able to gather knowledge and invent technology that makes life better, at the same time that knowledge and technology can be misused. But as you said, the true evolution will be in our power to stop it, and imo Spock's lifestyle is the way to go.

It's also an example of "Speak softly but carry a big stick". Being pro-peace doesn't make you weak, but rather that you acknowledge the horrors of war and strive to avoid it at all cost. It seems that the definition of Prime Directive changes from TOS to TNG? In 'Return of the Archons' Spock reminds Kirk of the Prime Directive, and Kirk answers that the Directive refers to a living, growing culture. Then the next mention of the Prime Directive plus an interesting discussion about the ideal society is found many episodes later in The Apple. Kirk seems to be justified to interfere, because the cultures he interferes with aren't living and growing. As far as I know, the Prime Directive is much more detailed in TNG.

    The idea has been around since humanity began - to rise up above your animal instincts - to act like you were made in the image of God. Very few consider it. Even fewer try it and fewer still succeed.
    God uses this to show us our need for Him but people a hard set on not seeing and not hearing.
    "Go to this people, and say,
    *“You will indeed hear but never understand,*
    *and you will indeed see but never perceive."*
    For this people's heart has grown dull,
    and with their ears they can barely hear,
    and their eyes they have closed;
    lest they should see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
    and understand with their heart
    and turn, and I would heal them."
    Then I said, “How long, O Lord?”
    And he said:
    “Until cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
    and houses without people,
    and the land is a desolate waste,

      I see it the same way. Right now, the West is in decline. Perhaps, when enough people at the right places of influence and power understand what's going on, and achieve to turn the tide, before it's too late, the West won't crash. I'm btw. in Germany, and what I see in US media, is what happens in Germany, too, just with a delay. But sometimes it's the action of one person, which prevents disaster, like Queen Esther petitioning for her people. Besides that, there really is nothing new under the sun (Ecc. 1:9), except that the amount of knowledge and the superb quality of life has been significantly increased. I like to think humanity is perserverant enough to survive whatever will come next. And that's also a prime message of Star Trek TOS.

      @@MarvinFalz No, nah, that won't wash. The culture on both those planets was thriving under their form of warfare. The whole point of their computer war was to keep their two civilizations from ruin. Just because Kirk found it distasteful didn't give him the right to interfere in their affairs. If you're going to start deciding which planets don't have thriving, growing, cultures, based on some arbitrary basis that is so ambivalent it can be applied to anyone, than nobody in the galaxy is safe from the Federation, and it's time to overthrow their entire, corrupt, system! Either the Prime Directive means something, or its doesn't.

      @@williamanthony9090 I see it the same way as you do, but at that point in time, there was nothing more to the Prime Directive, than what has been said an episode or two prior to this one. Of course, he could have just forced Anan Seven to let them go. And, I see the episodes Return of the Archons, A Taste of Armageddon, Errand of Mercy and The Apple as a continuum, in which the spirit of the Prime Directive is continually laid out.

      @@MarvinFalz - Frankly, I don't think the concept was all that well thought out by Roddenberry in the first place. Thus, it became a continuous problem for Star Trek writers to work around. 'Return Of The Archons' was a clear cut case of an arrested culture. This episode, however, was just as clearly a violation of the directive as ever seen in the original series!!! Had they been true to their own supposed code, Kirk should have been arrested, court-martialed, convicted, stripped of his rank, and sent off to a military penal colony, end of story---Lol. I know... I know... In the grand scheme of things, it's a small point to ponder, but Roddenberry drew a metaphoric line in the sand that became a major stumbling block throughout the course of the series. A MESS if you will, that was unresolvable thanks to the very ambiguity of Roddenberry's silly concept. In short, it was a bad idea from the start, and only got worse as the show progressed through the years.

    • @MarvinFalz
      @MarvinFalz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamanthony9090 Sounds like they - Roddenberry and the writers - were making it up as they went along. I hadn't realized up until now that the mention of a Prime Directive became a stumbling block. I guess, this is similar to what we're told about the Federation, Starfleet, Vulcans etc.
      - Everybody's supposedly "delighted with who we are," yet there is conflict everywhere. Kirk is split into his good and his evil side, and he needs both to be himself.
      - When the Galileo Seven is stranded and Spock is in command, everybody around him reacts emotionally, they're constantly irritated and angry with him, like they've never been around him ever before. This is mankind's elite, the best of the best humans, yet they behave like petty little a holes, even though Spock's only concern is to get everybody safely out of the life-threatening situation. When this is the elite, I don't want to meet the "common people."
      - The Vulcans, though supposedly unemotional, logical and more evolved than humans, come off as petty, too.
      - In Journey to Babel, which to me is a prime example that the whole "enlightened society of the future" is rather a wish than a reality, the representatives of the planets all have their own interests in mind. And when I read the title, I am reminded of the Tower of Babel.
      And technology in TOS is portrayed as beneficial, but also as some sort of enemy to humanity. When I think about it, as much as I love and prefer TOS over TNG, but somehow TNG is closer to reality, less utopian, less optimistic. Picard is more diplomatic than Kirk. Kirk was more of a soldier, who had to learn to be more diplomatic. And the Borg are a formidable enemy for mankind, they're the epitomy of the dark side of humanity.

      @@PurtyPurple It's easier to feel good than bad. The urge to always feel good seems to be a natural human trait. Empathy needs to be trained. That's always been one of Kirk's strongest character traits, the ability to feel what others feel, and react accordingly, often with understanding words, an understanding touch of comfort. Unfortunately, modern Western societies seem to gradually fall into the trap of "Do what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law," which leads to narcissism, facilitated by "social" media. Gene Roddenberry might have been a godless communist, but the moral values TOS promotes, seem to be largely biblically inspired. At least, Star Trek values go beyond a narcissistic self, which wants to feel good all the time. I believe, that's basically the message of "Where No Man Has Gone Before," where Kirk has to kill his old friend, who developed godlike powers and even went so far to demand to be worshipped.
