@@jmmyheffernan 4:37- 4:42. Would just like to know how to trigger that mute so I can lay it in the groove. In other words, what finger on either hand, and location on neck. ( wasn’t exactly sure what between 5 and 6 meant, yes frets, but which string. lol. I know a lot for a muted note. They come easy enough already. Ha. Thank you. Nice lesson.
@@DaveLeoni The muted note is played on the 4th string with the thumb just before the F and D notes. You tilt the bar up and use the tip of it to play the F and D as you pull the bar back to the third string. Hope that helps instead of confusing you :)
@@jmmyheffernan I got a Lap Dawg and it works perfectly for me. Thanks for the tip. I go from bronze to monel strings off an on. I don't know which type I like the best.

so if i hear fast dobro licks does that necessarily mean that the key is probably G or A or B flat with a capo? I'm trying to understand the most functional keys in other words do soloists have to maintain different licks depending on the key? And what if the tune is in a key with no open string notes? Would the dobro player just solo using all closed notes the best one can or would he try to insist on playing in G?
Lots of fast stuff is capoed but certainly not all. Dobro players learn licks in all popular keys. Yes, there is a different set of licks for each key, Sounds like a lot to learn but 95% of what you will play will be in G,A,C,D and E. So learn those keys first.Hope that helps
@@jmmyheffernan wow thank you so much for replying! I feel encouraged by your answer also because although I enjoy listening to bluegrass dobro, I actually want to learn the melodic and slower kind of dobro solos that I think are very expressive! So maybe having access to those open strings wont be as critical?
No, a player can never "insist" on a certain key. The singer is always the boss. Dobro's don't always use open strings and on slow songs in any key they are mostly used for effect. I have played thousands of solos never using an open string. Hope that helps brother!!!
Great stuff. Muting is really important in the first lick, I've found, on the D string as the G plays an open note.
Thanks Jonathan, muting is really important indeed. Thanks for posting!!!
You managed to teach this old dog a new trick! Thanks, Jimmy.
Thanks Jack....new tricks are what gets us outta bed everyday :)
Sounds Great, all of it, man I love that sound.

So how do you manage the muted note in between diagonals.
Can you give me the clock timing when I'm playing the lick in question?

What's the brand of bar you use?
It's a Scheerhorn. You can use a "Lap Dawg" which is more than fine if the Scheerhorn is too expensive for you.
