      @Sandcastle • I'm glad you believe all lives matter. Unfortunately, some people and systems don't support black lives as much as others. That's why it's good to donate, listen to and support black people. That way, all lives will matter.

    ok, so in TBOSAS the writing style and lack of character development are genius as they reflect the actual personality/attitude that Snow has. I'm not a psychologist/psychiatrist, but I do have a background in Mental Health as I work in Social Services. The genius behind this novel is that Snow definitely exhibits narcissistic and/or sociopath tendencies. He manipulates people and situations in order to get the best possible outcome *for himself.* he lacks empathy and genuine care for others, and uses the absence of those traits to his advantage. By denying the reader any empathy with the characters, and by making Snow himself cold and calculating, we experience what it is like to see the world from such a callous perspective. The reader fails to care about the outcome of any of the characters because our 'narrator' himself doesn't care about anyone beyond the glory and fame they bestow onto him. And while it may create lulls in the text it is actually quite genius and well executed. I've been telling people who ask if they should read it that if they expect it to be like the Hunger Games trilogy, then they're probably not going to enjoy it, but that if they are a fan of Suzanne Collins' *writing* , then it's honestly her best crafted novel to date.

    I had a lot of the same thoughts as you on The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but my overall takeaway was, this book still needs a sequel. There is so much time left between the end of this book and the start of The Hunger Games, so I could see at least two more books where we get more development for Snow, see what happens when he finally begins to accrue real political power, see more interactions between him and people that are like-minded to Lucy Gray to reinforce his inner convictions

  • @elenathegreat

    LOVED Bad Feminist. I was also kind of surprised that the essays were not all about feminism explicitly but I found myself pleasantly surprised by the media aspects.
    I really liked how at the end of TBOSAS (spoilers) it didn't feel like a character turning point when Snow went from loving Lucy to wanting to kill her because it seemed like his idea on the world and human nature had solidified in that moment. I kind of wish we saw more of her honestly but I also get we were seeing her through Snow's eyes.

    • @TheBookLeo
      @TheBookLeo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes i was pleasantly suprised as well! and yes i totally agree with you on the ending of tbosbas! It was especially lucy's worldview that I would've liked to see more from, because the few short things she said on it were my favourite

    Totally agree on the classic dystopian thing. Ballad really read like one. I personally don’t excuse classic dystopian for their failings but I REALLY didn’t excuse ballad bc of the reasons you said and more. I personally didn’t love political theory bc I thought it didn’t have the depth it thought it did

    I read Coraline before watching the film and loved it, so when they announced the film, I was scared about how they were going to do it. And after watching it, I realised I loved the film even more than the book because it is so well done, and the evolution of the Other Mother is amazing and something that doesn't appear in the book.

    the ballad of songbirds and snakes after reading it probably was my favorite after mockingjay. i guess it just clicks for some and others it doesn’t. for me, it didn’t feel at all young-adult but more adult. how it’s written correlates directly with how snow perceives other people, disconnected and unreliable to the point suzanne wrote it in third person. there wasn’t one instance where i feel suzanne was trying to in anyway make snow a charming character like some reviews have said.
    would love to hear your extended thoughts on it.

    I’m rereading the hunger games books before I start reading the ballad of songbirds and snakes. So you’re not the only one late in the game, I’m only halfway through the first book 😂😂 so if you do want to still make a video about the prequel but are worried that everyone has already done it, to me it won’t matter, I’ll still watch it.

    I love the Coraline movie, but havent read the book yet. My daughter really loved the movie too, maybe I'll end up picking up the book eventually.
    I just finished a ballad of songbirds and snakes last night... I surprisingly really enjoyed it... I see how all the complaints make sense, but I did enjoy seeing Snow as a kid... I do wish we should have gotten Lucy Greys POV though... this would have made it a lot better I think.

    I haven't read or watched coraline, but I might just be sneaky and only watch the film hehe. I was never really excited for the ballad of songbirds and snakes and on hearing people's opinions I am sort of glad I didn't buy it? I think I will wait until my library has it and just read it that way rather than buying it. Especially as I am not as crazy about THG as other fans are (except catching fire, that is SUCH a good one). I do want to read bad feminist! And I liked a darker shade of magic so this was a good reminder that I should read the sequel at some point.

    I loved listening to your take on Coraline. I think I had a different experience reading the book. A lot of it felt the same for me, but there were elements that I thought were very different. I thought the tunnel felt more alive in the book and I felt Coraline's real parents were much more relatable in the book. I also wasn't a fan of the introduction of Wybie in the movie. All in all, I enjoyed the book and the movie about the same, but for different reasons.

    Hi! First of all congratulations for your videos, I really enjoyed them. In this case I can’t resist the urge to tell you that we shouldn’t refer to the United Stated as America because America is a continent (well right now we can also say that America has 3 continents North, Central and South, but that is another discussion) If we say America we are omitting the rest of the countries of the same continent and giving supremacy to the USA. Thanks for reading, I hope you don’t mind that I pointed this issue.

    What made Orwell and Huxley great is that their thinking was mostly coming from their own experience. They did not read ten different political theories and mashed them together to bring about a message. Whilst reading the book, I could pinpoint where the author got her political thought from; it didn't seem like a new thought was established. I can also just read the Wikipedia page telling me what Hobbes and Locke had to say. The plot was thin and the characters were flat, and then her political message did not bring about anything new. Had Suzanne laid out how a leader makes it to the top and established a totalitarian state? All whilst keeping up a veil of democracy? A warning for us? Brilliant. But this story? Nope.
