Jimmy’s biggest weakness is his heart. And in Breaking Bad, you see that Saul very rarely, if ever, has a heart. So to me, this show is really about Jimmy losing his heart. He can’t fully become Saul Goodman until he’s lost that completely
"Why didnt Jimmy think his brother was recording him?" Theres another crucial element to his choice at the end, which really showcases how deep Chuck's manipulation was running this episode: despite everything Jimmy still loves his brother too much to see how alike they really are. Since the first season Jimmy's always been the biggest advocate for Chuck's condition even after finding out it was all in his head, and throughout this episode he sees his brother undergo some of the worst pain we've seen him go through and apparently suffering a massive relapse, none of which would have happened if Jimmy hadn't run his con to begin with. So in the last scene when he sees Chuck at his lowest, it doesn't even occur to him that he's being recorded because that would mean Chuck was faking the whole episode since he got out of the hospital, or at least the severity of it. Also what I find really compelling here is that despite Jimmy spending his whole life trying not to be a victim like his father, in the end all it took was a sob story and he played right into Chuck's hands. His heart really is his greatest strength and his weakness.
The duality. Jimmy's always using his "powers" in order to make good for the people he loves, at the expanse of anything that goes against it. Chuck's always using his "powers" in order to make good in the eye of the law, at the expanse of everything around him. These space blankets... This had Jimmy at first sight. Chuck used Jimmy's love for him, against him. That's sad.
The flashback says so much. The biggest problem Chuck has with Jimmy is that Chuck did everything “right” all his life and yet Jimmy was always the one who was the most loved. This hurt Chuck to his core and his motivation for everything he did to Jimmy. And it’s guilt for the way he treats Jimmy that causes his anxiety.
14:46 one of the very few times you see Mike actually scared. As you say he's shocked someone could scope him out and get one up on him. Another time was the box cutter scene.
Man if he'd just made his way to Hollywood at an earlier age, his con artist bullshit would have fit right in in that world and he has a knack for film as well. There are dozens of roles he could have crushed in the whole Entourage/Get Shorty type world of filmmaking, including entertainment lawyer.

Jimmy has such great talents that could lead him to greatness, but it's also exactly those talents that make his flaws come back to bit him so hard. Fun little fact: Vince wanted Betsy Brandt (Marie in BB) to make a cameo in this episode, in the hospital at the beginning, but everyone in the writer's room objected for fear it would rip the audience out of the scene, which is fair. Another neat little fact regarding the hospital scenes: Vince had the camera flipped near Michael McKean because he wanted the audience to "be inside his head" during the chaos, all of which was written by Heather Marion - the co-writer with Vince - who consulted a nurse she knew on what exactly would said and what actions would be taking place. So it's 100% accurate. This was her first episode to write, after a year as writing assistant. Got her the first of six Writers Guild of America nominations.

Reminds me of eating spicy food. How the capsaicin tricks the brain into thinking it’s burning… except it’s not. Im a complete baby with spice and even the tiniest amounts ruins the food. Others actually enjoy it and try to get the hottest possible peppers. In the opposite end there is horseradish which activates cold receptors causing a “burning sensation “ that is similar but different(like that doesn’t bother me in the least). We are just scratching the surface of it.
I've always been of two minds about the scene with their mom. While i do believe Chuck didn't say anything to Jimmy out of a sense of bitterness, it's also a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I can't imagine how i would feel if i left my mother in the hospital for a few minutes and missed her last words to me. Chuck could have channeled his bitterness that way, too. Telling Jimmy all about how mom called out for him and he missed it. Really guilty trip him over it. The real problem is the lack of communication in their relationship. Neither of them just tell each other how they feel, and that's really the big problem. If Chuck had just told Jimmy he was upset with him getting a law degree of course there would have been conflict, but there would not have been BETRAYAL. It's kind of a half baked thought, but i love this show so much! Thanks for watching it with us, James.

Yes!!! Epic episode. A few thoughts here - The intro flashback w/their mother in the hospital... The look on your face/expression after Jimmy asks, "Did she wake up? Did she say anything?," is gold. I imagined I could see the wheels turning in your mind, knowing almost exactly what you were thinking: "No. Chuck, no. Don't say it Chuck. No. Don't say it..." And then he says it. Boom goes the dynamite. Fuckin' brutal. And yeah, Ernie. Much love for Ernie. He has one of my absolute favorite lines from the entire series in this episode: "I miss the mailroom." Since he's a smaller character, and says it quietly, it can feel like almost a throwaway line. But for me, it's super deep and resonates in a lot of ways and directions. Amazing line. And I never thought of this before (though I shoulda, it's maybe kinda on the sleeve), but in the final scene, Jimmy saying, "I woulda made Nixon proud," is probably a reference to the Nixon tapes, considering what's happening in the scene at that moment. Last thing: Cool shirt ;) Rock on, James...

Also, my mom pointed out something cool when she watched this episode. She said that up to this point Chuck has been all about following the law to the letter, no funny business. And here he pulls an entire Slipping Jimmy con-job, to get that recording. If Jimmy would do such a thing, Chuck would call him a disgrace to the profession.
All of Chuck's actions were 100% legal though. Chuck doesn't care about morality, just the letter of the law. Meanwhile, basically all of Jimmy's con jobs broke some law or another.
You probably know this by now, but you can figure out the character behind 'Don't' if you rearrange the first letters of the season 2 episode titles; it's an anagram.
Isn't it ironic how Jimmy-like Chuck's scheme was to get his brother to confess? It was elaborate and manipulative and unethical. Chuck is capable of just as much grift as Jimmy is, and that's part of why Chuck doesn't like his brother. His loathing is rooted in self-loathing. Something else I wanted to point out as far as Chuck's "allergy". Whether or not it's "real" is irrelevant, to Chuck the pain and distress is all too real. Telling him it's not won't help, if anything it'll make him dig in his heels even more. Trust me on this one.

I loved chuck for getting jimmy on tape lol I hated this whole charade he pulled was being taken as truth. and that ernie was taking hits too. it was too fucked up. sadly stooping to jimmy's level and getting him on tape was the only way to prove the mess he made which should never have been done to begin with. being gaslit like that must be a truly horrific feeling
as a filmmaker you really need to watch and react to the sopranos after you finish BCS since its the only reason vince gilligan created both breaking bad and BCS and why the sopranos is considered the greatest american tv show made in the last 50 decades
This was another instance of a character flaw with Jimmy. He thought Chuck had no ability to use any electronics. It also exposes Chuck's character flaw and his disdain for Jimmy. I will leave it there.
Every time you start to see what Chucks perspective is and maybe sympathize a bit with it, he immediately does something that makes you just go, "nah, f**k that guy"

This is what I love about BCS. It lets the strength of the writing & characters do the heavy lifting.

Isn't it ironic how Jimmy-like Chuck's scheme was to get his brother to confess? It was elaborate and manipulative and unethical. Chuck is capable of just as much grift as Jimmy is, and that's part of why Chuck doesn't like his brother. His loathing is rooted in self-loathing.
Something else I wanted to point out as far as Chuck's "allergy". Whether or not it's "real" is irrelevant, to Chuck the pain and distress is all too real. Telling him it's not won't help, if anything it'll make him dig in his heels even more. Trust me on this one.

This was another instance of a character flaw with Jimmy. He thought Chuck had no ability to use any electronics. It also exposes Chuck's character flaw and his disdain for Jimmy. I will leave it there.

Every time you start to see what Chucks perspective is and maybe sympathize a bit with it, he immediately does something that makes you just go, "nah, f**k that guy"
