    This is looking good. I definitely will be going from a swift to a cone.. I'd like to know how the new yardage counter could be used to measure the yardage as the cone is wound.

      Thanks for the request. I will try to do a video about using the yarn counter with this cone winder soon. Oddly enough I sent all my yarn counters out to beta testers so I don't have one right now, but I will get one soon and will try this test then. While the code to handle this is there, I haven't tested it and I might end up having to adjust things some when I do test it.

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I will eventually make it a Kickstarter, but I don't do Kickstarters until I have the design finalized and have started to prepare the design for manufacturing. Waiting greatly increases my odds of finishing the kickstarter on schedule. I don't really have a timeframe for the Kickstarter yet, but it will be awhile since I expect several more improvements before it's ready to be released.

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AmandaLawrence_poisondwarf66 The kickstarter for the yarn counter and cone winder will be at different times. It would be too much work at the same time if I did them simultaneously. I want to be able to give each one my full attention and make sure both are the best they can be. I just don't feel I could do that if I did both at the same time.

    Will there be a weaving bobbin adapter? I do not use cones, but this would be a great option for weaving bobbins.

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There will be some adapters, but for weaving bobbins to work they would need to be just a tube. The types of tubes with ridges on the edges wouldn't work with the drum roller. The drum needs to rest on the yarn as it's being wound onto the cone or bobbin. If it has ridges then the drum will rest on those and spin the bobbin at the wrong speed.

  • @yenthompson9471

    Have you considered making a hand crank one similar to how many cake winders are and winders?

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have considered this, but making it motorized is something I have a lot of experience with so I decided to do that version. The hand crank version would require a lot of separate design and testing so it doesn't make sense to do both versions in the future. Based on how this motorized version does and the feedback I get then I might do a crank version someday, but I am not making an promises.

  • @pixgeekphotography
    @pixgeekphotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you make it to hold up to 10 oz of yarn??? That would be glorious!!! Love the updates on this can you make that yarn guide more sturdier with metal with where it clips and with the wing nut??? I would sooo break that yarn guide and it wouldn't be strong enough for me LOL! I am super hard on that part on my winder

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not likely to change its size again, but we will see once a beta tester gets it how much yarn they fit on it. I don't really want to give a final number without others testing it.
      I'm working on a new guide. I did actually try just using wing nuts, but I wasn't happy with that so I'm using a more complex clamping system, but I expect it to completely solve the issues. The only downside is you will need a screwdriver to take it on/off with this system.

    • @pixgeekphotography
      @pixgeekphotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DreamingRobotsBlog sounds great, how much yarn does it hold on it now?

  • @Falney
    @Falney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even before beta. I think an improvement would be a more ridged arm. The amount of bouncing around it does may effect how even finer yarns and silks get loaded onto a cone because the bouncing will effect the tension of the yarn.

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The injection molded arm will be a little stiffer, but going beyond that would significant expense since it would either require a metal arm or adding some custom stiffeners. In my personal testing I haven't seen the stiffness of the arm affecting tension and am not exactly sure from your explanation how it would. The only thing that arm does is push the cone down on the drum so the cone rotates at the same speed as the drum.

    • @Falney
      @Falney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, my bad with my terms. I was referring to the part that sticks out and guides the yarn. With the way it bounces up and down, it will have the effect of changing the tension from high to low rapidly.
      While it likely won't effect thicker yarns, it will possibly cause twists/tangles with thinner ones.
      Think of 3d printer filament when you loosen the filament on the spool, it will sometimes slip under part of the spool further down the filament and cause snags while printing.

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Falney Thanks for the clarification. I call that the yarn guide. I have been working on ways to adhere that better and look for improvements in future prototypes there.

    • @Falney
      @Falney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DreamingRobotsBlog you could print an upside V that runs flush with the table/desk with a hole in it to put a post in on the end. It is simple geometry that will be easy to injection mold or 3d print and will provide ridgedness on 2 axis.

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Falney The next version does this with a stamped metal u clamp, but it doesn't fit very well so I might need to go with an injection molded version like you proposed. The reason I'd try to avoid the injection molded version is because making each different mold is expensive, but you are right that this would solve it.

  • @suemossman4853
    @suemossman4853 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would it be possible to have it do half width balls of wool, therefore the rotation guide perhaps be replaced with half the size? Therefore the machine do both cones and balls which I think are also called cakes

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is possible, but it would require a different drum and some different parts (probably 3d printed). To me it seems way simpler to just use the full sized cones and just put however much yarn you want on them. The benefit of the half sized cones to me would be designing a machine around these smaller cones which would reduce the size and price of such a machine. I asked about this earlier and most people wanted the full size cones so that is the version I am designing.

  • @kristinae70
    @kristinae70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This looks awesome. I was wondering if you have thought about some sort of break away if the yarn knots? And then have you tried using it for standard skein yarn without the swift?

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm pretty sure if you used a skein of yarn without a swift it would get tangled. If you went at slower speeds and held the skein in your hand it should work, but I have not tried this.
      I have a plan to monitor the motor rotations and stop spinning if I see things get stuck from a tangle. But I haven't implemented this in the software yet. It won't stop if you are spinning really fine yarn and it snaps, but if you are normal or thick yarn that is strong enough that it causes a jam then the motor would stop spinning.

      Thanks for the honest feedback. I really appreciate seeing this. But don't worry about this raising my prices. I price my products based on how much they cost me to make with a margin to make a fair profit factoring in how many I expect to sell. I like keeping the prices low so more people can buy them. As long am I'm making a good living for my family, I'd much rather see more people using my inventions than trying to maximize profits.

    • @YarnDragon24
      @YarnDragon24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds good! I think a lot of us in the machine knitting world would be really interested in this. I’m a production knitter and it’s likely I’d be doing 10-20 100 gram cones a week, often 3-5 in a sitting. Think the motor will stand up to that?

    • @DreamingRobotsBlog
      @DreamingRobotsBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@YarnDragon24 Yes, I'd consider that light use for this kind of machine. I'm putting in much more powerful motor than needed because I wanted to reuse the motor from the EEW 6.0 that I've designed and that needs to handle much faster speeds than this cone winder.
