  • The movie "Dick Tracy vs. Cueball" is a 1946 American pulp action film based on the 1930s comic strip character of the same name created by Chester Gould. The dark and moody film noir stars Morgan Conway as Dick Tracy in the second installment of the Dick Tracy film series.
Luxurious diamonds are stolen but before the thief can safely hide them aboard an ocean liner he is strangled by ex-conman Cueball. Cueball takes the valuable diamonds and is given refuge by Filthy Flora, madam of the Dripping Dagger Bar, and then continues on murdering people that he believes are trying to double-cross him. Dick Tracy allows his attractive girlfriend Tess to act as a buyer for the diamonds but is put in grave danger when Cueball vows to eliminate ...
    ---
Directed by Gordon M. Douglas, produced by Herman Schlom, written by Chester Gould (characters), Luci Ward (story) and Dane Lussier, Robert E. Kent (sceenplay), Eric Taylor and Chester Gould (comic), starring Morgan Conway as Dick Tracy (the unstoppable detective in search of Cueball), Dick Wessel as Harry "Cueball" Lake (a murderous diamond thief. Gets his name after his big, round head. He strangles his victims with a braided leather hatband.), Anne Jeffreys as Tessie Trueheart (Dick Tracy's lovely girlfriend), Lyle Latell as Pat Patton (Tracy's bumbling partner), Esther Howard as Filthy Flora (madam of the Dripping Dagger), Ian Keith as Vitamin Flintheart (an aged thespian and friend of Tracy), Max Wagner as Max (Dripping Dagger bartender).

When I was a kid, (late 30' early 40's) our local theater had a 1pm Saturday matinee. Double feature, three cartoon, one chapter of a serial, and what seemed like a year's worth of previews. It was great. You could cheer and boo and if you brought your cap gun (and we all did) help the good guys catch the bad. I saw this wonderful movie then. When I watch it now, I regret I no longer have a cap gun, but I am thinking of getting one. I can't thank you enough for helping an old man be 12 again.

@ScreamingScallop I'm 37 and first saw this on VHS when I was maybe 9 or 10 and remembered feeling slightly uneasy the first time I saw Dick Wessel (the actor who played Cueball), whom I thought had a very powerful presence and forceful personality. I've seen several of these old black and white Dick Tracy movies and none of the other villians gave quite the same vibe to me. In my opinion, it just shows the excellent performance Dick Wessel gave in his role! Of the 4 RKO Radio Dick Tracy productions, this one's definitely my favorite with Dick Tracy, Detective (1945) a close second.

Filthy-Flora makes this DT version the classic best of DT features. Her drooping eye was really scary while she was getting the knotted rope. I kinda wish DT would have made Conway's career but he was not resigned to play the part and was shortly out of the business (selling real estate in New York). All the actors create great characters, led by Conway who appears to really have embraced the role. What's Obama got to do with these splendid Saturday afternoon delights?? I never noticed how really violent these features were, but it was all in the name of good over evil when we were a young and very naive nation.

Fitting for the role, certainly. He was in a good bit of 1930s - 1950s stuff, but he was usually uncredited, like in "Isle of the Dead" where he had a minor role the first plague victim to die. He had a more prominent role in "Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome," though.
He also died at 43 of his alcoholism; Cirrhosis of the Liver. He looks older than he really is in this movie - he was born in 1911, so depending on when the movie was filmed, he was 34 or 35.

Jason is shown to be extremely intelligent and high-functioning, while possessing some tactical sense and strategic planning despite his hydrocephalic deformities. He lays traps for his victims as seen in Part 2, can be seen restraining victims to avoid detection, and he carefully arranges the bodies of his victims, occasionally using them as blockades or projectiles. His sense of direction is perfect, as he is always able his way wherever he wants to go, usually back to Crystal Lake even from long distances. He can escape all manner of bonds. Every one of his kills is unique, and he always finds creative ways to get to his victims as well.

Did anyone else notice that "Mr. Little" is played by Byron Foulger? He was in heaps of movies, too. I'll be watching random 1930s - 1950s movies, and then he just pops out of nowhere. He's in "Ministry of Fear," "Quiet, Please... Murder," "The Panther's Claw," "The Black Raven," and "He Walked by Night" to name a few.
