The flashback isn't even over and strictly speaking, it's the most tragic backstory in One Piece: unlike every other backstory, Kuma makes decisions as an adult that shape the tragedy that befalls him. At first blush, Kuma refusing Ginny's proposal appears to be the same self-sacrifice defining so much of his story to that point, but in truth is an expression of fear hardening his heart. The subtext of the reprieve panels of his family being taken from the beginning of the flashback was Kuma seeing his family with Ginny. Immediately. She says "lets get married" he sees her holding their child. "But..." the fear of repeating what happened to his family after his birth spurned Ginny in a misplaced attempt to spare her the same fate. In pushing her away he was sacrificing his family, not himself. He thought to hide her away somewhere safe, which obviously wasn't going to happen, highlighted in her immediately signing up with the Revolutionary Army, because of course she would. And when his greatest fear comes to pass, the fear he sacrificed his family, their family to, it was far worse than he dared imagine: because he was not there to protect Ginny when she needed him, Ginny was enslaved alone and his daughter was a product of profound suffering instead of love. Ginny doesn't resent his disordered sacrifice and in her final act inverts and rights his mistake, sacrificing herself for her family; so that Bonney could be raised in a loving home and her love in turn might heal the wounds Kuma kept open, festering on his heart.
Its really sad because kuma really is that big quiet nice guy thats not selfconfident enough to get things done in a way others would. Like the marriage wouldnt be a problem with his powers, and he in general underestimated himself a lot. Obviously due to him being born into slavery aswell. Really the saddest story

That connection between the Gemstones and elder planets is amazing and I love it. Waiting for Kuma to hit Saturn with 'Sarabada', straight down into the ground this time.

Oda's out here reintroducing us to his favorite member of the D. clan: All D. Pain. Btw, the Homer/Maggie Simpson nod at the end gave me all the feels. Oda, please let Kuma and Bonney experience seeing Nika together. I need a little bit of catharsis. Edit: It's unlikely but what if the piercing that Bonney has is more than just a momento regarding the Sapphire Scale disease & Kuma but is an implant from Vegapunk to keep the disease at bay. There might be a way to remove the piercing and make Bonney susceptible to sunlight in order to raise stakes. I'm not sure how I feel about it but it's something that just popped in my head.
I know you spoke of the connections between Dr. Kurhea and Captain John being relatives but I believe that Dr. Kurhea is a relation of St. Jay Garcia Saturn for four reasons. 1. Rhea is a moon in orbit of the planet Saturn 2. her expanded lifespan is like that of the elders 3. she wears sunglasses like ones Figarland Garling wears 4. The castle she lived in mirrors that of Castle Pangea hinting towards her past.
I’ve spun myself through the 5 stages of grief at least once already, and I’m back to Bargaining. Low chance it’s the case, but Ginny could’ve been pregnant with Bonney before her abduction. We’ve seen this before with Rouge (Captain’s favorite factoid), and the time frame of her being taken and “discarded” was ~2yrs. Plot wise, it continues the misdirections Oda has used consistently throughout Egghead. If Kuma shows up at present day Egghead, it also gives a lovely bookend to his heart-wrenching story. He gets to see Nika, learn that his daughter does in fact have his buccaneer blood, and see the dawn of liberation as a gorosei dies.
16:07 on this bit as well, Bonney’s attitude shift post memory paw was stark. She thinks Sanji is great (a cook who can fight!?), and has no grievances with Vegapunk. She’s also well aware of the Thriller Bark and Sabaody interactions. It’s a lovely detail that asks as many questions as it answers.
I've been on team Bonny for straw hat for a few months now. When luffy was calling her a nickname then started calling her by her real name is when the thought came in, then realizing she had no where else to go (unlike Carrot and Yamato) solidified it... Especially now that she's confirmed to have the tragic backstory.
I speculated about Bonney being a clone as well and it makes sense, because we know they will go to VP. However I don't think Kuma cathces the disease. It has been shown that it manifests on the skin and not in bodyparts. Nothing on Kuma looks like he has the disease. It will simply be the case that he wants to save Bonney that they ask VP to clone her or at least that's the only help VP can think of. And we also know Saturn was responsible for Kumas cyborg transformation and memory loss, like we saw in the flashback when Ginny landed in front of Saturn. So somehow they trade Bonney's treatment for Kuma's transformation to get a WG dog
Bonney, along with Law (especially post crew wipeout) and Vivi, has become one of those characters that would feel just right as crew members. I wouldn't mind it if they took her with them as their apprentice, kind of like Shanks and Buggy with Roger.
I don't think the sapphire scales are a real sickness, they might be a fail experiment to turn people into dragons. Because the exact wording used reminds me of Kaido's scales. Which could make sense with the relation between the sun god and dragons. Something small I talked about the the server is that I really hope VP isn't able to heal her, VP should be someone who can do everything better than anyone else. He isn't a doctor, other wise VP is just a better version ussop + Franky + robin + chopper.
I think Saturn is Bonny's dad. Explains why she attacked him with such rage and also if Kumas last act was to try and take revenge on him at Mary Giose, then Saturn coming to egghead is what brings him to the island. And what allows him to see Bonny and hear the drums of liberation before he dies. My guess is Saturn doesn't even remember Ginny, but does know he has a powerful daughter in the world and definitely remembers Kuma... with this flashback expect the worst!
I think Kuma rejectd her disease with his DF and then took it in, continuing to who nothing happened and what he was doing woth the old folks. Vegapunk then was working with Kuma to find a cure for him, leading to the cyborg stuff.
This chapter got really dark! Kuma had a really tragic life from the get go it seems based on this flashback and how we see him in the present story. This is definitely building up to something massive in the next coming chapters. Great analysis as usual Randy
There is something going on with the Church of Nika/something. Kumas Bible is read by Bonney and is full of Sky Islands and Fishman Island. Kuma reads it in Thriller Bark asking the SHs where they would like to go on vacation. Also in the center of the cross has the Eight dots orbitting a "sun". The same symbol in Alabasta, the Kozuki Crest, etc. I want to know more about the symbol.
@cmbaz1140 it literally says Bible on it so I doubt it. I think it's a Bible of Nika. I think skypiea, Fishman Island, all the followers of Nika have the symbol of the dots. The symbol is everywhere.
It would cool to see Kuma take all of the pain he has endured over the years because of celestial dragons and give it Saturn. Oda doesn’t like to have the protagonists kill characters, but this would be more of a “just” way of doing it because Saturn would essentially be the reason for his own demise.
16:30 This is brilliant man! I was thinking the same thing, especially that Bonney, when she finally sees Luffy in Gear 5, she will recognize the rhythm of his heatbeat, and start to dance to it. This rhythm and dance was passed down through generations of Buccaneers (as evident through Kuma's flashback), and this was eventually passed down to Bonney by Kuma. I believe Kuma may probably have even told Bonney that this dance and rhythm may summon Nika, and if Bonney and more people start dancing to this, Luffy will be re-energized and probably be made even more powerful! Then the key would be Bonney disseminating the significance of this dance and rhythm as they fight Saturn. It would be fascinating to also see the Shandians reappearing at some stage in the future (maybe in the final war) and joining in on this dance since they danced to the Drums of Liberation in Skypiea. Farfetched thoughts, but fun to imagine!
Oh that live action content is going to be great. Even though there was unfortunately a delay due to the strikes, I knew that Randy would deliver fire, so it’s always worth the wait!!
What if sapphire scale was created and administered to the slave population post fisher tiger as a way to prevent escape, just make them get fried in the sunlight, thriller bark throwbacks
I agree with everything in this great video, especially in the sentiment... Its visible how it nearly broke you as you where sharing the story of chopper and making that parallel with Kuma and Bonney...... thanck you for that passion, love, and heart you put into this every time Randy, really
@@RandyTroy Ey there! It´s so nice to be able to salute you... my favorite Op´s content maker 😁 Let me take this oportunity to ask... Do you thinck maybe taking Math Piece in acount The Rebolutionary Army will come to Egg Head, just as VIvi and right before going to Elbaf Sabo would have the oporntunity of that conversation with Luffy and her... Vivi goes with the Straw Hat, and Vega Punk with Bonney goes with the Rebs? Cause if you think about it Vega Punk has alaready been in Elbaf, and has something like a promise to help the Rebs! If we consider it, It makes more sense, and it doesn´t seem that Vegapunk has a lot more to give to the crew and their journey...
I bet the robot might contribute to Saturn's demise. Giant robot in the basement takes a buccaneer to activate. Kuma's consciousness may or may not be inside it, but he's definitely necessary for it. Also his recent attack on Mary Jois was a nice parallel of the robots attack.
Not related to the chapter but when you mentioned Kuma heading to egghead I just realized that Sanji (first one to stand up to him on TB) and Franky (gave him mad props for protecting the sunny) are both with Saturn and will have some interaction with him when he returns
It's quite possible that Bonney is NOT a clone, but Kuma has the ability to transfer her disease like he does with pain. He then asked Vegapunk to become a Pacifista, with emergency protocols to protect Bonney and Luffy (like he's going to do now since he's on his way to Egghead)
You're analysis of 1098 was my favorite for the week. I agree with you about Dragon. I think because he had regrets about Ginny that's why he had to get Kuma. It's like how garp didn't do anything about ace but went to get Koby.
An overlooked detail is the expression on Ginny's Den Den Mushi. The spark in her eyes is gone and she can only form a tired bitter smile as she addresses Kuma one last time. Ginny dies, but Oda, through a device that was mainly used for comedic purposes before, shows us that the girl we knew on the previous chapter died long before she breathed her last... ... Being a Celestial Dragon's wife is in some ways worse than being a slave.
I don’t think Bonnie will be a clone. Here’s how I think it will work: Kuma goes to Vegapunk to find a cure. At this point in time, he can’t. So Kuma hypothesizes that he can repel the disease out of her, the only way to fully cure her is to become a cyborg so he can still feel the sun that he believes in so much. So I agree with you in that aspect, I just feel like there’s no reason for her to be a clone right now. I can definitely be wrong and I trust Oda to make it make sense, I just feel like that’s complicating things just for the sake of complicating it
I think Kuma took on the disease himself. When it comes to this flashback just assume the worst. It explains why Kuma is slowly becoming a cyborg instead of all at once, while vegapunk was researching cystals, and if Kuma could no longer protect Bonny it explains why he'd make a deal with the WG in exchange for her safety... If Bonny didn't know how Kuma's power works he could do it without her even knowing until she saw Kuma's memories... Kuma shows up at Egghead... dies in front of her while saving everyone, right after her finding out he's not her biological father and that she saved her life at the cost of his... but this time, unlike Kuma with Ginny, Bonny gets to hear him say I love you before she leaves...
8:10 to be fair, if the memories are removed before the clone is made she wouldn't really know she is a clone, most likely she would just wake up and think she is cured
I really would like the idea that each gorosei has a different incurable disease to be true. I think at someone point Chopper will finally have his big doctor moment against then gorosei and finally be able cure any disease
Everybody is a clone xP naaaahhhh. Kuma held up his promise to Bonney, curing her at her 10th B-day. He takes the scale desease on himself, turns himself in to the government and becomes a Warlord in exchange for Vegapunks aid and Bonneys freedom. A freedom she decides would be best spend becoming a pirate and trying to free her dad from the government... She's only 12, who wouldn't do the same :D
Maybe Dragon doesn't even show up to Egghead (or at least not in time for 1100) but does something impressive during the flashback. Unless Oda wraps this up in time and adds some explanatory for Dragon teleporting. But maybe the flashback will just take too long for that milestone
Imagine he pawed the disease out of Bonney and put it into himself, and now he arrives at egg head to drop all of the pain from the disease onto Saturn, AMPLIFIED by the power of the sun god luffy since the disease gets worse when exposed to the sun. If this is Kuma's last act in the series, it would be perfect that he is able to save bonney, fighting along side the person he worshipped most, the Sun God Nika. Even more poetic if Saturn is actually Bonney's real dad/ gave Ginny the disease.
[ ASSUMING BONNY IS NOT A CLONE ] 1. Symptoms appear and Bonny's skin get crystallized 2. Kuma absorbed the disease, his skin started to crystallize 3. Vega Punk remove the crystallized limb from Kuma and replaced with mechanical parts. 4. GO TO 1 (Repeat the process until full body of Bonny is cured = full body of Kuma is changed. ) Kuma can't remove the disease, but can remove its symptoms.
If Dragon has some type of Wind, Storm, or Sky Devil Fruit then he could probably arrive not too long after Kuma. For Ivankov, Sabo, and the others it might be a lot more difficult to get there. Karasu could carry a few of them there, but it would mean leaving the armies behind.
In 1072, when Bonney turned Vegapunk into a child, "the gems of his experience" came out. Also, the chapter name is "The Weight of Memory". Could there be a connection?
So sorry I was late to this review Randy!! Kuma continues to prove how much of incredible man of compassion and integrity that he is!!! I’m now convinced the gorosei and corrupt wg officials launched a smear and false flag operation on Kuma to ruin his reputation!!!
I think when Kuma makes it to egg head he will get all his memories back and will try and speak his final words to Bonny but she will already know because she watched his memories.
I hope we never find out which Celestial Dragon took Ginny. It'd hit harder this way, but what I would like is if Saturn gave Ginny the Sapphire disease.
An interesting thing to note: in that very same flashback where Vegapunk is talking about memories specifically as 'something intangible that Kuma's Devil Fruit might allow him to interact with', he also mentioned the soul. We've already seen proof that the Paw-Paw Fruit let Kuma remove somebody's memories, namely his own, so what if it also allows him to remove people's souls? My theory is this: rather than simply transferring Bonney's memories over into a mindless clone body, (because to be honest, that feels too much like just letting her die and replacing her with a new one) Kuma will push Bonney's entire soul out of her body and into a clone. After all, if the Ope-Ope Fruit can swap people's personalities for some reason, why couldn't the Paw-Paw Fruit do something similar?
You're close. The title of the chapter is "the weight of memories". Vegapunk talks about a theory that the weight of the soul is 21 grams. So the title draws an obvious parallel between souls and memory. Your memories are your soul IMO. But, honestly it still feels weird for Kuma to do that. Because I doubt even Vegapunk knows exactly how the afterlife works. Which means they'd be messing with stuff that really shouldn't be messed with. Like when you clone a body, wouldn't there already be a soul in it? Wouldn't you be overwriting an existing soul by putting Bonney's soul in? It just has a lot of stomach churning implications that I can't really get on board with. I mean that's worse than what Hogback was doing, since the bodies he was putting shadows in weren't already living people.
@@derrickmiles5240 Personally, I think the soul is a lot more than just a person's memories, but that does seem to be the way it's done in One Piece. I just remembered that Pudding temporarily reverted a bunch of Big Mom's Homies into remembering their human lives.
@@NineHundredDollarydoos Well funny enough, that same chapter contains some evidence that there may be a tangible higher self. The chapter number is 1074. 1074hz is the frequency of the 8th Chakra, which is symbolized by a "white star". Located 1 ft above the head, it is the seat of the soul, and acts as a connection to your "higher self", and as a connection to "all things". Luffy used white star gun as Saturn emerged from a black star. The Greek God Saturn is the black star in Judaic tradition, so I think it's quite obvious that the black star is meant to represent Saint Jay, and it's juxtaposition with Luffy's white star gun is meant to imply that the white star and thus the 8th Chakra represents Luffy. As he is someone who is awakened to his higher self and has the voice of all things.
@@derrickmiles5240 That's the kind of massive reach that actually works but is so big brained that I have serious trouble believing that Oda meant for anybody to actually figure it out.
@@NineHundredDollarydoos Well, the way I stumbled on this info was noticing the black star/white star parallel between Saturn and Luffy. First I researched the black star and found the stuff related to Saturn, and then I researched the white star and it immediately brought me to the 8th chakra. Luckily I had just reread 1074, and so when I read that the frequency of the 8th chakra was 1074hz, that immediately drew my attention. For English speakers it's an obscure reference, but I imagine the mythology surrounding Chakras are better known in Japan, and so it's not quite so obscure over there. The reference to all things and the higher self along with the 4 digit frequency lining up with the chapter where souls are heavily emphasized is a really juicy coincidence. After further study on Chakras, I came across other parallels as well. The 7th Chakra is located inside the head. Called Sahasrara, it means "thousands" and is symbolized by "a lotus with a thousand petals" and the symbol looks almost exactly like the design for Robin's devil fruit. Each petal represents an aspect of the being, and when all the petals are opened, it causes a balancing between the mind, body, and spirit leading to an "awakening". And this is almost exactly how Kaido explained devil fruit awakenings. Well, I could go on about this forever, so I'll leave you with a bread crumb. Awakened zoan scarves seem to cradle the location of the 7th chakra, while awakened mythical zoan scarves seem to cradle the location of the 8th chakra. IMO, this small detail explains why Kaido couldn't awaken his devil fruit.
You are so set on the clone idea. Kuma will find out about vegapunk, then he will meet him through dragon. Kuma will then make a deal for bonney to be cured, he will trade the last buccaneer body on the seas to vegapunk so he can form the pacifistas. Kuma and vegapunk make a deal that he will take everything but protect bonney and find nika.
bonney has a powerful devil fruit, vegapunk cant cure it but through the power of the fruit she can live. kuma has to trade his freedom for the fruit to give to bonney. not only that, since she at least is descended from a celestial dragon, she has to go live with them. I imagine kumas cybernetic implants weren't too much at first, but more was taken from him as he disobeyed orders, or assisted the strawhats. marineford was the first time we had seen him as mindless
given the discussion around illnesses with St. Saturn's Gyuki form I think have uncovered St. Shepherd's yokai form and powers which suits his cabinet post of Warrior God of agriculture with St. Shepherd Ju Peter is a literal sickness yokai in the form of the Kakuran No Mushi a parasite yokai that has a red body with many limbs atop the body is a black head and red body whose mouth is agape like a person throwing up this matches Shepherd's big headed transformation. If you have got this infection you will continually vomit and have diarrhea the only cure is to eat rotten fruit ironically enough.
That Symbols is Kuma,s Church and The Great Kingdom Symbols Are Belongs To The Hosokawa clan.. it Depicts Nine Planets or Stars Comprises a central circles surrounded by Eight Smaller circles...
Randy you're a Sanji guy right? would it be cool if Sanji is the one who will call out Bonney's real age? not like exactly the real age but he will know that Bonney is just a kid.

Predator Blackbeard skit had me dyinggg😭 you da goat Randy
I know you spoke of the connections between Dr. Kurhea and Captain John being relatives but I believe that Dr. Kurhea is a relation of St. Jay Garcia Saturn for four reasons.
1. Rhea is a moon in orbit of the planet Saturn
2. her expanded lifespan is like that of the elders
3. she wears sunglasses like ones Figarland Garling wears
4. The castle she lived in mirrors that of Castle Pangea hinting towards her past.
Damn...

This intro change, smart choice Randy
I've been on team Bonny for straw hat for a few months now. When luffy was calling her a nickname then started calling her by her real name is when the thought came in, then realizing she had no where else to go (unlike Carrot and Yamato) solidified it... Especially now that she's confirmed to have the tragic backstory.
We don't know if the revolutionary army knew who took Ginny.
xx i g u
Did you just hit me up with that One Piece Lofi 🔥
Bonney, along with Law (especially post crew wipeout) and Vivi, has become one of those characters that would feel just right as crew members. I wouldn't mind it if they took her with them as their apprentice, kind of like Shanks and Buggy with Roger.
I knew Kuma’s backstory would be horrid but I didn’t expect it to get this bad
I thought a Marine Admiral was the one who took Ginny last chapter. I CAN’T believe that I would’ve preferred that instead of what actually happened
Its a diary or ships log?
@cmbaz1140 it literally says Bible on it so I doubt it. I think it's a Bible of Nika. I think skypiea, Fishman Island, all the followers of Nika have the symbol of the dots. The symbol is everywhere.
There are 8 D. families. You can also connect these 8 families to the planets.
Best intro in the game 😭😭
Finally watch it. Randy cant wait for your live action/anime reaction comebacks. Thank you.
Kuma is the one piece Mr.Struggle. Alls his life he had to fight, Kuma remembers we was conflicted
TPAB: To Pimp a... Bear?
That Blackbeard part broke me.
Yup, this chapter was intense
this last few chapters have made the whole story more dark than ever
What if sapphire scale was created and administered to the slave population post fisher tiger as a way to prevent escape, just make them get fried in the sunlight, thriller bark throwbacks
The catch a predator bit killed me 😂
I agree with everything in this great video, especially in the sentiment...
This is what I've been waiting for
the chris hansen appearance is crazy 💀💀💀
The memes had me dying. The Simpsons reference was totally on point.
Amazing work once again Randy, keep it up (just pumping algorithm lmao)
Appreciate that!!
STEPHEN A SMITH ON THE INTRO
It's quite possible that Bonney is NOT a clone, but Kuma has the ability to transfer her disease like he does with pain. He then asked Vegapunk to become a Pacifista, with emergency protocols to protect Bonney and Luffy (like he's going to do now since he's on his way to Egghead)
You're analysis of 1098 was my favorite for the week. I agree with you about Dragon. I think because he had regrets about Ginny that's why he had to get Kuma. It's like how garp didn't do anything about ace but went to get Koby.
This chapter is the most uncomfortable ones. There’s no way celestial dragons can even live after this.
Here’s how I think it will work:
Kuma goes to Vegapunk to find a cure. I can definitely be wrong and I trust Oda to make it make sense, I just feel like that’s complicating things just for the sake of complicating it
Maybe Binney remembers (unconsciously) saturns multiple legs from when she was an infant and associates it with bugs which is why she hates them.
DUDE! i'm subscribed and have bell notifications on but never see your video come up!
Kuma Backstory is
Savageeeee
Imagine he pawed the disease out of Bonney and put it into himself, and now he arrives at egg head to drop all of the pain from the disease onto Saturn, AMPLIFIED by the power of the sun god luffy since the disease gets worse when exposed to the sun. If this is Kuma's last act in the series, it would be perfect that he is able to save bonney, fighting along side the person he worshipped most, the Sun God Nika. Even more poetic if Saturn is actually Bonney's real dad/ gave Ginny the disease.
12 year old bonney, who's been a pirate and fighting against the world government for years, can't join, but 6 years oldTama was fine? I'm lost
Bonney makes more sense to go with the Revs IMO at this point.
[ ASSUMING BONNY IS NOT A CLONE ]
1. Symptoms appear and Bonny's skin get crystallized
2. Kuma absorbed the disease, his skin started to crystallize
3. Vega Punk remove the crystallized limb from Kuma and replaced with mechanical parts.
4. GO TO 1 (Repeat the process until full body of Bonny is cured = full body of Kuma is changed. )
Kuma can't remove the disease, but can remove its symptoms.
Could there be a connection?
if this chapter could be summed up in one word its bleak
I think it more likely that Kuma takes Bonnie’s disease from her than her being a clone, or I hope
So sorry I was late to this review Randy!! Kuma continues to prove how much of incredible man of compassion and integrity that he is!!! I’m now convinced the gorosei and corrupt wg officials launched a smear and false flag operation on Kuma to ruin his reputation!!!
We support you and Merphy Randy
I think when Kuma makes it to egg head he will get all his memories back and will try and speak his final words to Bonny but she will already know because she watched his memories.
I’m ready to cry again les goooooooooooo
I hope we never find out which Celestial Dragon took Ginny. It'd hit harder this way, but what I would like is if Saturn gave Ginny the Sapphire disease.
I honestly think she’s a clone too , I take multiple things into account and her being a clone makes the most sense to me
Love that idea that Saturn took Ginny over spite!
I think Bonney's blue scales was cured after she ate her devil fruit.
Bro yes!! What if he removed her disease and took it on himself then replaced his body parts
It can't be Saturn because he wouldn't want to "reproduce with bugs"
I don't think Dragon's a fraud, but he'd be a real prick if he didn't tell Kuma Ginny's last message.
That Symbols is Kuma,s Church and The Great Kingdom Symbols
Are Belongs To The Hosokawa clan.. it
Depicts Nine Planets or Stars Comprises a central circles surrounded by Eight Smaller circles...
Kuma bout to turn in to Six Paths of Kuma and use Shinra Tensei on Egghead.
Randy you're a Sanji guy right? would it be cool if Sanji is the one who will call out Bonney's real age? not like exactly the real age but he will know that Bonney is just a kid.
