Now that I'm looking at this series, I have a more questions:
-are the QR codes for the alternate versions of the characters free?
-is the progress on the game saved on a card or online or both?
-the 3rd and 4th rounds on each cup just have more difficult to beat opponents or there are other differences?

      1) The QR codes for almost all the alternate versions are free, you can download them from: mariokart-acgpdx.bngames.net/spcode/ . However, there are two, Mario raccoon version and the Hamburger car that you need to buy the April 2016 Mario Kart magazine for (which I have recently bought and will be trying out in future episodes).
      2) Both. The gamecard, or ""Bana Passport"" saves all your data. If you register your card online, you can register your name/address/etc to the card so in-case you ever lose it, you can get a new one with all your saved data. You can also load money onto the card so you don't have to put any money in the machine either (I tend to not do this though). Also with the same "Bana Passport" you can play a range of different games and have the files saved to it as well.
      3) From what I can tell, they tend to be harder opponents, using better items, and the course tends to be longer as well.
Thanks for your questions and if you ever have anymore let me know!

Thanks for your comment! I am glad it was useful! My main playlist is of me playing the game online, for the single player grand prix series I wanted to try all the characters / items etc!

I love the normal kart design for this game. They should reuse it.

This game NEEDS a Nintendo Switch port.

I agree! It would make a very welcomed addition.

NinjaGaijin Is this game better then GP 1 and 2? It's been FOREVER since I've played it and I have player GP 1 and 2 recently. They're fun in short bursts but get very boring quickly.

I would say GPDX is far better. However, the American or Western arcade version pales in comparison with the Japanese counterpart. With the Japanese version you can use there “banacard” to save the game file. Work your way in collecting all the items / karts / characters. The ability to actually use the QR with the camera which will allow you to add characters etc.
Also there is an online function, which allows you to race other players in real time as well as racing against their ghosts in a 50 stage map spanning across Japan. I have sunk a lot of time in the game and can say I have and continue to get a high level of enjoyment out of it.
Sadly like I mentioned earlier, the American / western edition is, quite frankly, not good. Items are randomized (you can’t pick) no banacard, no online play whatsoever. Is it worth playing? Yes. But the Japanese version is the true gem. Ideally they would port the Japanese version to the switch.
