    This is the first horror film I ever saw, I was 7 or 8. I laughed every time Jake kept coming back looking worse each time. The only part that scared me was David turned into the werewolf for the first time and his face stretched. Still one of my favorite movies

    The fact that the werewolf was on all fours rather than standing upright somehow made it more ferocious. It was more like a crazed lion than a wolf. Landis exploited that characteristic to best affect in the subway chase from the wolf's perspective.

      I’m a classic horror fan, so the classic Wolf 🐺 man will always be at the top of my list. For modern werewolf movies, it’s a tie between An American Werewolf in London and The Howling! The scene where the girl in the woods cuts the attacking werewolf’s arm, that scene did something to me. Years later, I had the pleasure of meeting that actress, Belinda Balaski.

    • @Neenie1976
      @Neenie1976 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@juliocaesaralcaraz9891 I like the howling but I think because it was done at the same time as American werewolf in London I much preferred the change in that film than in the howling. But I will say the howling had a better story than AWIL. It’s about time they did some more werewolf films instead of just remaking old horrors as they don’t have any original ideas.

    Knowing Dan Aykroyd’s contribution to “Twilight Zone: The Movie” (1983), the idea he might have played a werewolf tickles. I love the thought, but I can see it going two ways. Trusting a director’s ability to covey his idea and Aykroyd’s examples of acting, I think we could have had something something not too different than what we have. I like the idea, though, that the characters feel more relatable, because we’re not seeing famously recognizable actors.

Second the writing is fantastic, the fact they decided to make this a comedy/drama/horror movie is perfect, I feel it adds some realism to the movie. Finally the acting is spot on they cast this movie so well. David Naughton is very likable person and a great choice for the lead, Griffin Dunne plays a decaying corpse better than anyone ever and finally Jenny Agutter nails it as the nurse turn love interest and I completely buy her being devastated at the end of the film.. plus she's smoking hot. This is by far one of the best films ever, I’m glad no one has attempted to remake this classic film. I know someone one day might try but as long as they watch this and pay homage to it and keep it as a dark horror comedy slasher movie, not too many laughs but plenty of scares I’d celebrate it. Plus they have to stick to the rule of only using songs with moon in the title👍🏻

    7:21 - ahhhhhhhh I wouldn't say AWIL was gruesome and violent "for its time" ( early 80's ). I mean didn't those Friday the 13th movies, The Thing, Alien, Dawn Of the Dead, David Cronenberg's movies and that Lucio Fulci stuff from Italy also come out around THAT SAME TIME? I'd say it was actually TYPICALLY gruesome at the time. Oh, and WOLFEN isn't really a werewolf story.

    This and The Howling is are my favorite werewolf movies but with the budget of An American Werewolf in London they had more money to spend on the practical makeup effects with a budget of $10,000,000 where as The Howling had a budget of $1,000,000. But both movies are amazing and no CGI could ever replace good old fashion practical makeup. In An American Werewolf in London when David Naughton's character (David Kessler) is transforming for the first time he is in so much pain because of the transformation and the audience watches in agony for this character as he transforms into a beastly werewolf not too mention also the great full werewolf creature to me the make up effects are much more effective than any modern film today.

    Meh, I like the "Paris" sequel. I was 13 at the time of its release, so it was marketed to my demographic, and it still gives me plenty of feelings of nostalgia for that time in my life whenever I revisit it. Plus I had started watching a lot of horror movies at that time (as we weren't allowed to watch them when I was a kid), and after seeing so many horror movies have bad endings at such a rapid fire pace (I probably watched close to 100 horror movies in only 1 year), it was nice to see a horror movie with a happy ending where our main characters rid themselves of their curse and live happily ever after. Bush is a great rock band, so them at the soundtrack helm definitely helps. The only thing I can't forgive is of course, the horrible CGI for the 'werewolves' (which in the trailers/commercials, I always thought they looked more like gorillas, lol). But like John Carpenter's Escape From LA, I just laugh at how bad it is without it hampering my overall feelings of the film.

    Wolfen isn't a werewolf movie. The Wolfen are a super intelligent breed of wolves living in the cities slums feeding off the homeless. The wolves kill an architect & his wife after he plans to tear down a church they are living in. The police investigate their murder.

    • @gojirafantastic6378
      @gojirafantastic6378 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidhanson4909 It doesn't come out & say it, but it does imply it. The Wolfen do track down the people threatening their home. They can mimic babies, feed off the ones that won't be missed. Listen how the Indians talk about them. There's also the ending. The Wolfen don't kill the Police officer after he unloads his gun or when he destroys the model.

    • @davidhanson4909
      @davidhanson4909 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, my question was for Darth...I got absolutely no impression that the wolves were once human. I agree that super intelligent wolf does not equal werewolf.
      In the book, which had no Indians btw, they were ...something else; a hitherto unknown (or more accurately forgotten) species of something-or-other upon which werewolf legends were based, but still not a shape changer and completely non-magical in nature.

    "See you next Wednesday" was actually a running joke in John Landis' first movie, Schlock. That was also Rick Backer's earliest ape suit. He also wore said suit in much of the movie. He performed the same service in the completely infamous Dino De Larentes remake of King Kong. He wasn't just given his Oscars. He EARNED them.

  • @gallery7596
    @gallery7596 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some of the effects do look dated now; the limitations of the time didn't allow them to show the entirety of the werewolf in full trot, so you just had tight shots of his front half and it's movement looked like it was using bicycle wheels for hind legs. Having said that, the human to werewolf transformations shots are still awesome to watch.

    "See You Next Wednesday" is a running gag that Landis puts in all of his films. It was on the billboard cops were hiding behind in "The Blues Brothers" for example. You realize he's still making movies and tv right? It's not like TZ blackballed him in Hollywood. I think it's more that, like many of the directors of the "Film-School Generation"- Coppola, Lucas, Spielberg, John Carpenter, some others- he had the misfortune to make some really films straight out the gate, be declared a genius, and then when we put out a product that was merely ok or even pretty good but NOT an instant classic, the shine was off the apple.

    • @DungeonStudio
      @DungeonStudio 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, much like Kevin Costner and the Water world fiasco. I call it the Lizzie Borden syndrome. Whether one knows the full history or not, this stigma gets on a name and is looked at with trepidation from there on. Though Landis was mostly vindicated from TZ tragedy, I think many in Hollywood still view him as dangerous in his expectations now. Probably watched closely with even a pop gun on the set now. Like assigning someone to watch over Van Gogh to make sure he isn't sniffing the paint or cut off his other ear. That's when art becomes a job, and the job can never make good art again.
