    JW brings 'dead pan' to a whole new level - brilliant. Had most of those things in my Victorian house in London before I replaced them, lead, rubber and pvc in the same installation, with lights on a wooden fuse board exactly like John's and 'power' on individual MEM switch fuses running from a Henley, was a bit dodgy even in the 60s I should think!

    That old rubber cabling and the VIR cabling made it all the way down to New Zealand as well.
    Plenty of that horrible old stuff left here too.
    Ironically the best condition VIR I ever removed was in an apartment building, it still had cardboard tags attached that said "Emergency War Grade"....
    Still lots of wooden framed switchboards with rewirable fuses in them too. How we don't have more fires I don't know...

    • @GSHElectrical
      @GSHElectrical  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thanks for commenting and the news you have them in New Zealand. If installations using these wiring methods don’t start fires why do we need AFDD’S ??? Thanks so much for watching all the best Gaz 👍

    • @johnsimpson8263
      @johnsimpson8263 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GSHElectrical Not come across AFDD's in any older places as yet. Was capping and casing a thing there? If not, be thankful.. Capping and casing was essentially wooden conduit, just not round. Imagine a flat piece of timber, say 30mm x 15mm with grooves routed out of it for the VIR cabling and then a thin wooden cap over the length of it.
      It is good to surround your perished cable with kindling material the full length of your house for a nice even burn...

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnsimpson8263 I've seen capping and casing in a Victorian house in Belfast, along with VIR and other ancient wiring methods. When I was travelling Ireland and NI in 2008, youth hostels provided me a glimpse of some of the most interesting and in some instances downright dodgy wiring I've ever seen, including modern-ish PVC 3+E with the outer sheath just crumbling away for no apparent reason - no signs of heat, no particular UV exposure (inside, in a somewhat gloomy hallway), nothing.
      I've been toying with the idea of adopting capping and casing to modern double-insulated cables suitable for installation against combustible materials though, it certainly looks neat!

    The comments about no RCD's or MCB's really is pointless, with most of the boards shown RCD and MCB's were not even thought about let alone manufactured. The very first MCB I saw, came from France and was operated by two push buttons-green on- red off. Trip speed could be adjusted using an Avo Meter. Today everything is available and the Regs have been tightened up no end, which is good. Its easy to smirk about old equipment but that was all that was available.The very first MICC (Mineral Insulated Copper Cable) I saw, also came from France. An excellent cable for high risk fire situations, like petrol depots but fell out of favour due to its high labour costs to install.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frankly, 20 years is almost new. Of course, the regs have changed a bit, requiring more RCD protection and non-combustible enclosures but still, not really all that old. Plenty of 50+ fuse boards still around!

  • @Hammy135
    @Hammy135 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wow, fused neutrals, dodgey. I’ve never seen one of those before.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite a few countries retained them for a long time, fear of N-E faults on TT supplies. I'm in Austria, where until the early 1980s it was up to the electricity supplier whether fused neutrals were required or not. In theory, the regs have required neutral fuses to be replaced with solid links for over three decades but in reality they never are, unless there is a full rewire. I certainly know someone who received an electric shock replacing a light fitting only having removed the neutral fuse, assuming lights being off equal safe working conditions. On the other hand I also know someone who received a shock stripping wires with his teeth, not knowing that his brother had turned the MCB back on because the radio wasn't working. DIYers are just too creative!

    No mention that you can get plugin mcbs for the Wylex boxes that can be reset (after checking what the fault was) instead of faffing around changing the wire.

    • @cbcdesign001
      @cbcdesign001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JW doesnt like them and thinks they are a waste of time, no better than the fuses they replace. I think he is wrong, the MCBs have safer tripping curve characteristics compared to fuses, circuits can be easily isolated for maintenance etc and they are more convenient if something happens that causes fault current to flow and they trip, as you said.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cbcdesign001 And of course you don't have to turn off the power to the entire house to reset a tripped MCB, which I'd consider a major advantage over rewirable fuses!

  • @johnschlesinger2009

    It’s not true that no electrician would install a metal lamp without an earth. In my parents’ house there were brass wall lights, with brass lampholders, supplied by twin VIR cables, and these had been installed by electricians. In those days, most table lamps had brass lampholders, and were usually supplied with twin flex. Cpcs on lighting only started with the fourteenth edition regulations.

  • @OkenWS
    @OkenWS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    4:00 the MEM fuse board, with the button breaker cartridges. One to watch out for which I found on a meter exchange: It's possible for the button with the rating written on to come away from the mechanism. This exposes two pins. When testing with a voltmeter to neutral, for some Godforsaken reason, the pins of the mechanism are live at supply voltage with the breaker unmade. Meaning, of course, if the consumer was to attempt to make the breaker with their finger pressing the pins, they will have a brown pants moment. Not sure why I thought to check but glad I did before prodding at it. The bodies also have a habit of popping apart into lots of little bits if too much force is needed to remove them from their slots. Not ideal when you're limited scope and cannot replace.

    • @OkenWS
      @OkenWS 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also a comment on VIR, I have seen on at least one occasion in Shropshire, domestic VIR used as overhead supply cable to about four properties. Western Power had replaced the majority of it ~2012 after the customers reported it self-igniting as seen on JW's channel. Inexplicably they had cut out the burnt bit and left the parts terminating into the properties in place, even more inexplicably without a neutral cutout inside the properties (ie service neutral terminated in Port 2 of the meter). The area seems to be a bit of a horror zone for baffling service work.

    Another great video, as always...
    One small moan!
    With the antique consumer units, they may give a loud bang when inserting the fuse, without finding the fault first.! BUT the ASBESTOS flash guards/tapes are the real killers in the older units. Yes, still finding them, in this day and age.
    As the fuse wire ruptures, exploding into the flash tape, and then, removing the porcelain fuse holder from the porcelain fuse carrier, breaking off fibres of asbestos in the process. Even with items installed in the 70's, like the MEM Excel, Switch Fuse range.
    No good being a well trained Sparky earning all that money, if you haven't got the lungs to enjoy it in later life.....
    If all the students have a responsible employer and been on a Asbestos Awareness course, Sorry for the moan.
    Moan out of the way,
    Good to see experience and knowledge being passed on.
    Makes me feel old.
    GSH. Keep up the relentless good work and time you invest into your students.
