    Used to be a manager for an SPCA and the Pit Bull Terriers were like caged raccoons - walking the walls of the run. So much energy. My Beagle/JRT mix has the energy of 5 dogs. After walking her with the Boxer mix, she would be charged up after the walk so had to take her on a bike ride around the block before she was done and could finally settle. Sara Ondrako has a great video on making a snuffle mat with a pocket to help stimulate them mentally and tamp down their energy level a bit.

    I've been around dogs from a young age, always had no trouble with training them or correcting poor behaviors. I'm not a professional by any means, but ive handled/trained a fair amount of breeds froms gsd's, pits, mals, labs, doodles, heelers... all came with unique challenges but ultimately ended up well behaved and obedient pooches. Now i have a little (maybe rat terrier) mutt I rescued, and her personality is so much more independent. Very much a "listen when i feel like it" type of dog that has taken a lot of work to get a good recall

    I've learned that it's not always in your best (training) interest to ramp up an already excited dog. Look's like this terrier is getting more excited by the minute! Great that he loves the training so much, but will this work when teaching him things like heel or sit and stay?

    My terrier was very easy to train outside. Inside is another story. He starts listening, but gets bored very easily. I have to keep reinforcing his training every couple of days. Its getting frustrating after 5 yrs.

    How do you get a terrier to stop going of to sniff in the middle of a game please

    • @taillte6355
      @taillte6355 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mine used to do the same and it's super frustrating, I've found what works for us is doing a good 30 min sniff time in the morning ex - sniffari, nose work, snuffle mat or just pottering in the garden to get some sniffs out for the day. It's also helpful to give windows of opportunity so the dogs know what they're doing. Ex when playing I'll say " Let's play!" This helps the the understand what they should be doing and helps them stay focused. If they still get distracted start moving away and acting fun so they are more likely t engage again as they have to chase. Sometimes it's best to wait till the dog is less interested in the scent when you ask them to re-engage as it sets them up to succeed more as they are less preoccupied. Over time they won't disengage to sniff when playing/training etc. Hope this helps
