    Same here a massive thunderstorm destroyed my router. Router is dead even the power signal switch is not blinking.

    This is so crazy I have such a similar setup as you. I had this happen to me last week but I think lightning entered through multiple means. I had a lot more affected. I lost my tp- link switch completely along with the tp-link wireless router. I lost my hue bridge eithernet port but (still powers on and has zigby connection to lights). Lost an HDhomerun, lost Nvidia shield eithernet port. An Xbox one eithernet port and power supply, not the whole Xbox. 65inch TV. The Xfinity cable utility port at the street was damage so the moved to a second port at the street. And the cable modem was broken. All the things listed here were in a surge protector ups. I lost 2 ups's in the strike.i don't have coax or eithernet pas through on my surge protectors but I had a coax stand alone connector in line from the cable from the street. I also lost other items in the house that were not on surge protectors garage door ect. About $3500 worth. Some stuff manufacturer is replacing.

    We had a lightning strike our backyard or something last night, we’re the only house effected by the strike and our internet signal is gone from our provider. Modem and linksys router is still working and trying to connect. Just the signal is missing. My fathers car was EMPd and all the electrical is gone, tv upstairs is fried/short circuited. I’m wondering if there’s maybe a way to establish a new signal to the internet provider since the modem and router are working fine. Or maybe it’s a underground wiring problem. If that’s the case maybe they will have to dig to fix this issue which will take a long long time. Overall lighting wrecked us.

    Lucky you! I have the EXACT same router setup, lightning strike hit the other day, capacitor in the cable modem literally blew up, and it burnt out the WAN port on the router. I was able to reconfig the router to use one of the LAN ports as WAN, but now it's speed is 1/16th the gigabit connection :) Shame, I loved that router.

      Funny you comment this. It just happened again about 2 hours ago. I have a modem with 4 WAN ports and then my Ubiquiti UDM pro for a router. Didn’t damage my UDM but took out WAN 1 on the modem. All I had to do was switch to WAN 2

    I had my xfinity cable (+ phone) modem and coax run through my APC UPS w/ surge protection, lightning hit the pole outside my house and the modem still got damaged. Had a surge protector plugged into the APC battery backup / surge protection plug so there was double protection. Modem has WiFi and phone, but all three LAN ports are dead. Nothing else in the house was affected and I have multiple UPS powering other PC's and 3D printers (one was running a job, no problem). Goes to show surge protectors don't always protect. Luckily Xfinity will replace the modem at no charge, but I will be without LAN for a couple days until that gets delivered, and my secondary network fed from that my security cameras are linked to are dark until I get LAN back... :(

    Bro same thing happend to my motherboard and router was on a ups still its not working it's a victim of mother nature's lightning strike

    • @TechOut
      @TechOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya need to use the cable and ethernet protection part of the UPS as well apparently even if its not a direct hit it can still find its way through the cable and when it hits the modem can go through the ethernet port on that

    • @TheAceB
      @TheAceB 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok i'll look into that now need that protection thanks bro!

    This happened to my router but I had ethernet plugged in my laptop and now my laptop won't turn on, any fixes to that?

    • @TechOut
      @TechOut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like it damaged the motherboard. You would most likely have to replace at least that.

    How do we protect this type of issue? Would surge protector prevent this from happening?

    • @TechOut
      @TechOut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Mine was plugged into a surge protector but the coax wasn't so you will want coax and power plugged Into it

      @@TechOut When you say Coax, are you referring to the telephone DSL/XDSL line, or an ethernet cable? Thanks

      Surge protectors are a joke or a marketing thing. The only good protection is electrical isolation. Like plastic and glass.
      Run a Fiber media converter between the WAN ports on the modem and router and keep some physical distance between the two. This won't protect the cable modem but will protect the rest of the network where you presumably have thousands of dollars of equipment attached.
      This only applies to ADSL/Cable modems. Anything with an electrical connection to the outside world. If you already have Fiber to the home/premises then you already have what I described.

    We lost 20+ routers in our village after a direct strike. Routers are not earthed so it will search for earth and jump the small isolation transformers onto your ethernet cables to connected equipment that is earthed. This is a serious problem that needs a solution. Most UPS line protection won't save your router.

    • @TechOut

      My UPS does offer coax surge protection but it affects my speeds greatly.

    • @r.perkins2103

      @@TechOut Open up the UPS and have a look at just what protection you get for your money. Gas discharge tubes won't affect speeds and some TVS diodes are designed for this. I'm making my own ;)

    • @TechOut
      @TechOut  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to open it. I've tried it before. Modem loosing uplink and downlink channels and speeds slowed to about 100mbps. Called the cable company and they where seeing a weak signal between them and my modem. Removed the UPS and back to normal.

    My Ethernet cable connected with the ps4 isn’t letting me connect anymore, but my router is fine, is it possible for Ethernet cables to break after Lightning strike, the cable worked perfectly fine before that btw

    • @TechOut
      @TechOut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try a different cable that's the easiest way to find out. But I've never had that happen it's always been the port that was damaged.
